With ebrary you can explore books using advanced search techniques; highlight and take notes within the text; generate automatic citations with a URL hyperlink back to the source; as well as manage, archive and share research with peers. What s New at MINDS@UW-River Falls The MINDS@UW-River Falls project added its 200th individual item to the repository in 2010.

Also in 2010, the 20th individual UWRF collection was added to the project with the development of the UWRF Health and Human Performance Senior Seminar Research Projects.

2 What s New at MINDS@UW-River Falls The MINDS@UW-River Falls project added its 200th individual item to the repository in The item, entitled Impact Assessment of the UW-Extension Conflict Team Workshops A, B, C, & D Focus Group Report, was part of the UWRF Survey Research Center s Other Reports Collection. Also in 2010, the 20th individual UWRF collection was added to the project with the development of the UWRF Health and Human Performance Senior Seminar Research Projects. Developed in partnership with the Health and Human Performance Department, this collection of submissions represents research projects conducted by groups of HHP seniors during their PED 461- Senior Seminar course. Research topics were developed by the students and represent an array of inquiries in physical education, sport and exercise science, and health. In the winter of 2010, the library began work on the GoldinBrown collection, which contains a sampling of work by Wanda Brown and Phyllis Goldin in several art forms: pen and ink drawings, music composition and songs, poetry, creative writing and essays. Included in this collection is a recording of the new UW-River Falls school spirit song - Our Chance to Fly. The Lion s Paw Book Club is seeking discussion leaders for next season s schedule. The Lion s Paw Book Club is an open discussion group named for Wisconsin author Hamlin Garland s short story, Under the Lion s Paw. The club began in January 1998 as a collaborative effort serving UW- River Falls faculty, staff, students, and community members who enjoy reflective reading and discussing contemporary issues. The TESOL Masters Theses and Plan B Papers collection was created in April This collection consists of graduate students theses and Plan B papers required for completion of the Masters of Arts in TESOL degree at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. Other new content includes: 1960 and 1961 Meletean; additional Geology newsletter articles from Dr. William Cordua a collection that now contains 89 articles; additional reports and surveys from the Survey Research Center and the addition of more Plan B papers. MINDS@UW-River Falls is currently working with the Graduate Studies Office to finalize the submission process for Graduate theses and Plan B papers. As of today, MINDS@UW-River Falls has a grand total of 295 items. State of Wonder is February s selection with discussion leader, Rhonda Petree. Staff Highlights Briana Fiandt, who has worked in the Stacks/Reserve Departments at the Davee Library since 2008, accepted a new position as a Circulation Librarian at the Santa Fe Community College in New Mexico. Erin McDermott, Serials, will be an LTE in Reserves until the position can be filled. If you are interested in being a discussion leader for the season please call Cate at or cate.dodson@uwrf.edu. Jackie Throne began as Day Circulation Coordinator on March 22nd. Jackie served as interim Day Coordinator from October to March and prior to that, had worked as a student staff member in both Circulation and the University Archives. Maureen Olle-LaJoie, Director of Library Technology and Circulation, has been appointed Chair of the UW-River Falls Academic Staff Council. Cate Sering, who previously worked in the Circulation Department and University Archives as a student employee, has returned from library school in Milwaukee to complete an internship in the Reference Department as well as the University Archives. Cate is completing her MLS degree online. Meetings are held the second Wednesday of the month during regular semesters from 3-4 pm in the library s upper level breezeway. All are welcome to attend.

These stories are both local and national, and are presented through newspaper articles, letters, diaries, and photographs.

Here are the stories of the men and women, the soldiers and civilians who experienced the Civil War, presented on the date they were originally written or appeared in print.

If you or someone you know is interested in the Civil War, in journalism, in politics, etc., or just likes to do research, stop by the Archives to learn about volunteering.

The Civil War started on April 12, 1861, and ended on April 9, To commemorate the war, the Archives started a blog that presents the stories of the American Civil War as it affected the inhabitants of Northwest Wisconsin, either directly or indirectly. These stories are both local and national, and are presented through newspaper articles, letters, diaries, and photographs. The blog will mirror the war; it will begin small and grow as the months march on. Here are the stories of the men and women, the soldiers and civilians who experienced the Civil War, presented on the date they were originally written or appeared in print. Last semester a senior history student assisted in setting up the blog and contributed many of the early postings. If you or someone you know is interested in the Civil War, in journalism, in politics, etc., or just likes to do research, stop by the Archives to learn about volunteering. You can find a link to the blog on the Archives homepage ( then click on the WordPress W under the gray navigation bars, or go directly to the URL: thecivilwarandnorthwestwisconsin.wordpress.com/. The blog s postings also automatically show up in the Archives Twitter feed ( uwrfarchives), and some postings also appear on the Archives Facebook page ( com/pages/uwrf-university-archives-area- Research-Center/ ). You can find links to both Twitter and Facebook on the Archives homepage, in the same area as the WordPress link. In addition to the blog postings, the Archives Facebook page includes postings about what was happening on campus 50 years ago, interesting tidbits from old newspapers, notes on larger items of interest, and photographs from the collections. The Ancestry Library Edition collection has approximately 4,000 data sets including key collections such as U.S. Federal Census images and indexes from 1790 to 1930; the Map Center containing more than 1,000 historical maps; American Genealogical Biographical Index (over 200 volumes); Daughters of the American Revolution Lineage (over 150 volumes); Federal Slave Narratives; and a strong Civil War collection. CQ Global Researcher provides in-depth coverage of global affairs from a number of international viewpoints. Each single-themed, 12,000-word report is written by journalists with years of international experience. The reports make use of standard sections such as current situation, pro-con, and contain an introductory overview; background and assessment of the current situation; pro/ con statements from representatives of opposing positions; chronology on the topic, followed by short features for extensive context; a sampling of related international perspectives; maps and graphs; bibliographies of key sources; next steps for additional reading; and author profiles. Cabell s Directory helps authors in particular disciplines determine which journals typically publish manuscripts similar to theirs or could be the best fit for a manuscript. The index in each directory helps authors match the characteristics of a manuscript to the topic areas the journal emphasizes and acceptance rate. 5 Library News in Brief The Davee Library is often contacted with requests to publish images of some of the library s permanent art collection, specifically the Hmong Story Cloth on the main level near InterLibrary Loan and the Find Your Dream mural in the upper level breezeway. Both have been published in a number of educational publications or shown at national conferences. The storycloth and mural are often sought out because of the symbolism and multicultural nature of each design. Most recently, we were contacted by Pearson Education, an international educational multimedia publisher, providing scientifically research-based print and digital programs to help students learn at their own pace, in their own way. Cate Dodson, Reference: Your Inner Fish: A Journey into the 3.5 Billion-Year history of the Human Body by Neil Shubin. Shubin illuminates the subject of evolution with humor and clarity in this compelling look at how the human body evolved into its present state. Shubin was co-discoverer of Tiktaalik, a 375-million-year-old fossil fish whose flat skull and limbs, and finger, toe, ankle and wrist bones, provide a link between fish and the earliest land-dwelling creatures.
