Verbose and not very clear By Karolina Netolicka This book assumes that if it actually showed you an example, like a 15-line xbrl taxonomy, all the brackets would make your head explode. To avoid this unfortunate outcome, the authors take the following measures: - Apologizing every time they're about to explain something in depth ("Sorry we have to get so technical...") - Never actually showing you any xbrl To be fair, they do say this is a book for business people. I read the first 100 pages, and I got a good general understanding of what XBRL is, what it isn't, and what it might be suited for. This could have been compressed into about 20 pages - nevertheless if you have some patience they do explain the general gist well. It's just that if you're hoping to get into any specifics, your head is going to start spinning from all the definitions with no examples. I haven't read any of the other books yet but I'm hoping to find a "XBRL for people who aren't scared of punctuation marks". 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Strong Introduction to XBRL By Robert Schneider Charlie Hoffman is known as the "Father of XBRL," and through his blog and postings he continues to play an important leadership role in its development. In this book, with the help of several excellent coauthors,

8 Mr. Hoffman provides a successful introduction to the computer language that is now required for key SEC filings, such as the 10-K. The book offers readers a good conceptual framework of what XBRL is, as well as discussing its various implementations by companies, regulatory agencies, and other entities. Is this the only document you'll need to look at to become an XBRL expert? Does it offer a sustained discussion of the XBRL specification in all its particulars? Of course not. It's a Dummies book, for gosh sake. Mr. Hoffman and his team have done an outstanding job of providing readers a relatively brief but nonetheless solid understanding of the field. While parts of the book have naturally been overtaken by events, it continues to be an excellent resource for those who want to gain an overview of XBRL and its potential for utilizing business data. I was expecting more hands-on examples than theory which I could get from sources on the Web. The big disappointment came from trying to obtain Spider Monkey, one of the free tools mentioned in the book. After contacting [...] for evaluation copy as suggested in the book, I got an from their Support asking to chat with me. They asked for my phone # and also gave their international # to call. After telling him that their tool was mentioned in this book and also that 1) I didn't want to disclose my phone #, 2) I preferred test-driving the trial version first before talking to them, and 3) I never had to go through this kind of hassle with obtaining other trial versions of software products in the US, he basically told me that he wouldn't send me the trial version without having talked to me fist. Now I wish that, before buying this book, I should have made sure that I got the tools mentioned in the book first.
