Illustrated and embellished with several engravings by medland, coloured after the original drawings by Mr Alexander and Mr. Daniell. London, T. Cadell and W. Davies First edition. 447pp. Quarto. Contemporary full leather covered boards and with a new leather spine. The corners a little bumped. Some offsetting to the pages opposite the maps. Apart from this minor offsetting this is an exceptionally good clean copy. 19 color-printed aquatint plates with additional hand-coloring, including one folding, by T. Medland after Samuel Daniell and W. Alexander, and two folding engraved maps, the first a hand-colored plan of the harbour and town of Rio de Janeiro, the second a "Chart of the Southern Extremity of Africa".. Barrow was the late private secretary to the Earl of Macartney and accompanied him as Ambassador from the King of Great Britain to the Emperor of China. On the way the ship visited Madeira, Canary Islands, Rio de Janeiro, Cape of Good Hope, Batavia, Vietnam and of course China. There is a supplement of 74 pages "An account of a journey to Leetakoo, the residence of the chief of the Booshuana nation" Abbey Travel 514. $ BASEDOW, Herbert. Six annual editions of Stan Cross' comics from the daily paper, featuring the adventures of two elderly rascals Wally and the Major. The strips are in black and white and are generally double or triple frame. A unique piece of immediate post war Australian popular culture. $ FORE EDGE PAINTING: A lovely fore edge painting on a book True Stories or Interesting Anecdotes of Young Persons published The fore edge is gilt and on the angle is a contemporary watercolour of an English river scene with a castle in the background. $ FRANKLIN, Miles. Signed by the author on the title page. This is a signed copy of the first edition in very good condition. Franklin is one of the most important Australian literature authors and this is arguably her second most important book. This is indeed a rare treat. $500 2

The customs and social organization of certain of the Aboriginal tribes inhabiting Central Australia. Mostly the Arunta Tribe. This book is concerned with an important series of ceremonies, of the Arunta, called Engwura. Spencer and Gillen observed this for three months in the summer of Spencer was an academic and Professor of Biology at the University of Melbourne and Gillen was a man of little formal education who spent 20 years living in Central Australia. He was at various times a magistrate and protector of the Aborigines. He lived with the Arunta tribe who considered him an initiated member. It contains a catalogue of Australian Aboriginal Tribes. This catalogue defines the tribal name with an English and phonetic spelling; the location of the tribe, with a note of any related tribe, triblet or horde; the alternative spelling or alternative name of the tribe; the size of the occupied tribal area and gives the bibliographic references. 8 On a recent trip to Laos I called into the National Library and meet some nice people. The library contains books and manuscripts concerning Laos and surrounds. It includes many Leaf Books which are printed on banana leaf and other such medium. It also includes many books printed in the nineteenth century and earlier. Sadly these books are in a poor state of repair and urgently need lots of work. Laos is very much a third world country and in fact UN studies place it as the poorest nation in Asia and one of the poorest in the world. It s a communist country and ruled by people who perhaps don't appreciáte books as we do. The library has a zero budget for buying old books and a zero budget for maintaining the collection. So in a moment of clarity or perhaps insanity and after much discussion with the library staff I promised them that Cornstalk Bookshop and Sydney Rare Book Auctions would raise the money to repair these books. So we have agreed with the library that we will send two bookbinders and restorers to Laos for a month to work on the books. Whilst there they will work with two Laotian library workers and train them in this task. Nicholas Beckett and Rosina Lavalie have agreed to do this work. Nicholas works at the State Library of New South Wales as a restorer and Rosina, whilst not working full time in the trade, is a very competent restorer. To do this we are appealing to our generous friends in the book trade to donate a book which will be auctioned by Sydney Rare Book Auctions during the next few months and all the proceeds including an inflated buyer s premium of 25% will go to the fund to repair and maintain their library. We are hopeful that this will be an ongoing project and perhaps will be able to raise the funds to bring a Laotian person here for further training. The Library is situated in an old French Colonial building which has been sold by the Government to a Chinese developer. Part of the deal is that the Library is relocated to a less desirable location but in a new building which on a good day will be air conditioned. Also the new building is six times the size. So there is some hope that this valuable collection will be able to be maintained in a better state.
