1 PRESS RELEASE n 2 Levallois-Perret, July 10 th, 2007 The president of the Jury of Feature Films of the 33 rd edition of the American Film Festival of Deauville will be French director and writer: ANDRÉ TECHINÉ Roberto Frankenberg I embark on o a film as I embark on a journey. I don t know what landscape I am going to discover. That s what is so exciting when you work and when you discover the works of others, as for this journey to Deauville.

2 First a film lover and a critic, André Téchiné made his debut director in 1969 with an unconventional and ambitious feature, PAULINA S'EN VA, built around the actress Bulle Ogier. The film shown at that year's Venice Film Festival was not actually released until In the meantime, Techiné worked on more traditional, novelistic structures, fuelled with references to different genres and writers he s influenced by: from Brecht (SOUVENIRS D'EN FRANCE) to expressionism (BAROCCO) or roman noir (HÔTEL DES AMÉRIQUES). 3 THE BOOK PRIZE The Lucien Barrière Book Prize of the 33 rd American Film Festival of Deauville, whose jury includes Frédéric BEIGBEDER (writer, book publisher and journalist), Gilles-Martin CHAUFFIER (writer and editor-in-chief of Paris Match), André HALIMI (journalist, writer and filmmaker), Jean-Claude LAMY (journalist and writer), Eric NEUHOFF (journalist and writer) and Gonzague SAINT BRIS (journalist and writer), will be awarded during the festival to the American writer: JAY McINERNEY for his novel The Good Life published in France by Les Editions de l Olivier JAY McINERNEY, THE WRITER: Born January 13, 1955 in Hartford (Connecticut), Jay McInerney currently resides in New-York. The son of a multinational company executive, he followed his parents from London to Vancouver, then to Pittsfield (Massachusetts). This is where he met Gary Fisketjon, later to become his publisher. In 1977, with the help of a Princeton grant, he settled down in Tokyo for two years. Back in the States, he worked for the New Yorker as a fact checker and as a reader for Random House. Raymond Carver then got him to leave New York and its night life for Syracuse University, where he wrote It s Six A.M. Do You Know Where You Are? First published in Paris Review, this short story became the first chapter of his debut novel, Bright Lights, Big City. As soon as it was published in 1984, the book was a tremendous success. During the following years, the media hence focused on a new generation of writers, labelled the literary brat pack', with Jay McInerney supposedly being the leader. Among others were also Bret Easton Ellis, Tama Janowitz, Mona Simpson, David Leavitt, Susan Minot, Lorrie Moore When Bret Easton Ellis and I started to write, urban experience was only a small thing in American literature. Today most writers, especially Franzen and Lethem, and even Don DeLillo in Cosmopolis, write about New York.

4 First praised to the skies, McInerney and Ellis were ruthlessly attacked by the media, blaming a lifestyle that was shocking according to the standards of the East Coast establishment. As my friend Norman Mailer puts it, photoflashes have this ability to steal everything that can be left of your intelligence. McInerney answered back on the front page of Esquire by flaying the voyeurism of the establishment, unable to understand that Sex, Drugs and Rock n Roll is not a talking point but a way of life, which did cost some their mental health and others, their very lives. The flop of Story of my life, the monologue of a 20 year old New York girl close to the main character of Breakfast at Tiffany s, compelled him to question himself. It took 5 more years to write Brightness Falls. Novel of a generation, Brightness Falls is both a Tom Wolfe-like biting comedy and a Fitzgerald-like tragedy. Once more, the book was critically acclaimed and appeared as a best seller in the New York Times list. The Last of the Savages, set across the 70 s, depicted an America where the Ancient and the Modern confront each other, just as justice and freedom, honour and betrayal. With Model Behaviour, Jay McInerney proved he s a brilliant and inspired observer, pointing at the meanness and flaws of a time, in this case the 90 s, with some kind of a ferocious joy. He published a collection of ten short stories in 2001, How it ended. Written from an interview with François Armanet and Didier Jacob for Le Nouvel Observateur and Jérôme Schmidt for Nova. Until when Everything that made Jay McInerney one of the most brilliant writers of his generation is in this book: humour, lightness, style, and this art of sketching out social comedy with ferocity, in a time when just everybody wants to be rich and famous. More over, with a touch of solemnity, a dash of melancholy, Jay McInerney shows a beautiful and darker new side of his talent.
