PHILOSOPHY IN INTERNATIONAL CONTEXT/PHILOSOPHIE IM INTERNATIONALEN KONTEXT edited by/herausgegeben von Hans Lenk (Karlsruhe) in connection with: Ioanna Kuçuradi, Matthias Maring, Herta Nagl-Docekal, Gregor S. Paul, Hans Poser, William Sweet, Tran Van Doan LIT
EDITORIAL Philosophy should, in a dynamic and global world of intercultural dimensions and many different world views communicating with each other, deal with these very phenomena. In this series works on these intercultural and interdisciplinary embedded perspectives and purviews will be published. The series will promote philosophy s going intercultural, interdisciplinary, planetary, global, humanitarian and humanistic in a practical sense.
Ioanna Kuçuradi NEU Ethics and World Problems In this collection of the papers on Ethics, Ioanna Kuçuradi clarifies concepts related to Ethics as a philosophical discipline, starting with the term ethics itself. She sketches an approach to and in Ethics as knowledge, not as systems of norms, in the light of which she discusses theoretical problems related to the evaluation and value problem we come across everyday in public life and in politics. As a result of this discussion, which makes obsolete the relativismabsolutism debate, she suggests ways which, if followed, promise to make it possible to overcome some of these problems. vol. 10, 2016, 290 pp., 39,90, pb., ISBN-CH
Naoshi Yamawaki NEU Glocal Public Philosophy Toward Peaceful and Just Societies in the Age of Globalization Glocal Public Philosophy means a practical philosophy that deals with universal public issues from the particular public world or place where each individual lives and acts. Taking historical changes of the nature of public philosophy, as well as of academic situations from the 19th century onwards into consideration, the author tries to develop this idea in view of contemporary philosophies both in Western countries and in Japan. This book provides not only new knowledge about modern Japanese public philosophies but also inspirations to consider the new role of philosophy for the realization of more peaceful and just societies. vol. 9, 2016, 130 pp., 29,90, pb., ISBN-CH
António Manuel Martins (Ed.) Cause, Knowledge and Responsibility The present volume discuss aspects of Cause, Knowledge and Responsibility from various theoretical points of view. The contributions provide input to intense discussions on these contested topics. The volume is based on results of the conference of the Institut International de Philosophie (IIP) in 9 13 September 2009, at the University of Coimbra. vol. 8, 2015, 240 pp., 34,90, pb., ISBN-CH
Ioanna Kucuradi Human Rights: Concepts and Problems In this collection of papers on human rights, Ioanna Kuçuradi conceptualizes human rights as ethical principles, as well as premises for legislation and for legal reasoning. She attempts, by doing so, to show the significance of clear concepts for the protection of human rights in practice. Taking this conception of human rights as her point of departure, she also discusses the specificities of law, of the state and of politics that hold the most promise, under present-day conditions, for the protection of human rights and the prevention of their violation. vol. 7, 2013, 232 pp., 29,90, pb., ISBN-CH
In-Suk Cha The Mundialization of Home in the Age of Globalization: Towards a Transcultural Ethics Worldwide cultural diffusion along with economic globalization is ever widening the boundaries of an individual and a group s homeworld as alien cultures are absorbed into each other. This process is called the mundialization of home. The spherical movement of capitals, goods, technology and workforce across national borders is also accompanied by spread of ideas, beliefs, values and customs among diverse cultures, and as people in newly emerging market societies are being brought to self-awareness as individual citizens, they have begun to address issues of individual freedom, social justice, human rights, global environmental change and civil society. vol. 6, 2012, 112 pp., 19,90, pb., ISBN-CH
Hans Lenk (Ed.) Comparative and Intercultural Philosophy Proceedings of the IIP Conference Seoul 2008 The volume documents the results of the Annual Meeting of the International Institute of Philosophy at the occasion of the World Congress of Philosophy 2008 in Seoul. Logically, systematic and methodological differences and comparisons between cultural traditions are analyzed from a multicultural perspective. General challenges of multiculturalism for world philosophy are analyzed from ethical and ontological approaches, e.g. of ancient Chinese and Greek philosophy. Historical studies regarding influences and migrations of philosophical texts across different cultures as well as religious and human rights debates about tolerance are topical themes. In addition, the question is raised whether logical principles are cross-culturally valid. vol. 5, 2009, 224 pp., 24,90, pb., ISBN
Tomonobu Imamichi; Hans Lenk (Eds./Éds.) Aesthetics in Contemporary Philosophy. Esthétique dans la philosophie contemporaine Proceedings of the International Institute of Philosophy Conference. Actes des Entretiens de l Institut International de Philosophie. Tokyo 2006 Philosophers from different regions of the world who had participated in the IIP Annual Meeting on Aesthetics in Contemporary Philosophy in Tokyo, 2006, analysed and discussed questions trying to connect the traditional aesthetic approaches with contemporary interpretation. Starting from the outstanding paragon example of ancient Greek art we have here comparative studies of experiencing and judging the beautiful and artistic characteristics in different cultural traditions like the Far East with its huge variety of traditions, roots and interactions between the Buddhist and Chinese as well as the Japanese arts. Is there any common essence or property which characterises an object or performance as artistic or of high quality? What are the roots and characteristics of artistic processes and creativity? vol. 4, 2009, 296 pp., 39,90, pb., ISBN
Hans Lenk Global TechnoScience and Responsibility Schemes Applied to Human Values, Technology, Creativity and Globalisation The 21 st century is shaped by globalisation, worldwide electronic information dissemination and planetary presence of media and IT networks. The information society became a high-tech industrial or systems-technological super-information society with ubiquitous IT accessibility. Attending to techno-science super-structures and systems technocracies the book tackles problems of social responsibility, humanitarianism, ecological policies, and a philosophy of technology, planning, risk assessment, decision-making, globalisation, creativity, achievement-orientation, etc. for a humane future orientation. Philosophy should go systems- and practice-oriented, normative and optimistic again. vol. 3, 2007, 432 pp., 39,90, pb., ISBN Debiprasad Chattopadhyaya; Jaakko Hintikka; Hans Lenk (Eds./Éds.) Ethics Facing Globalization / Ethique face à la globalisation Results of the IPP Conference / Actes des Entretiens de l Institut International de Philosophie. New Delhi 2000 In our epoch of globalisation, almost all the parts and regions of the world would more frequently interact, if not grow together, at least economically speaking and via electronic information exchange, leading to worldwide virtual ubiquity. Whether this sort of economic and informational globalization may lead to a cosmopolitan orientation, if not unity, of the different parts and regions of the world, is an intriguing question. Although the world became much more interconnected and interactive in terms of economics, information exchange and air traffic, the different cultural and social traditions still remain. Despite the noticeable globalization in economics and information real cosmopolitanism did not yet succeed very widely. All this would highlight ethical questions of an intercultural character which are discussed in the present volume from an analytical, methodological, and cosmopolitan perspective. vol. 2, 2006, 184 pp., 34,90, br., ISBN
Hans Lenk; Reiner Wiehl (eds./éds.) Kant Today Kant aujourd hui Kant heute Results of the IIP Conference/Actes des Entretiens de l Institut International de Philosophie Karlsruhe/Heidelberg 2004 In a sense, Kant is a really up-to-date philosopher, not only in his theoretical philosophy (with its epistemological and methodological turn he labeled transcendenta and his emphasis on rational foundation, logical deduction and conceptual construction) but even more so with his moral and political philosophy, dealing with categorical, or deontological, moral principles and the extension of ideas of freedom, mutual compatibility, conviviality, the indispensable dominance of law and legal procedures as well as the avoidance of violence and war not only between individuals, but also peoples, respectively. The topic of a relationship between Kant s philosophy and the approaches of other outstanding philosophers of the past and modernity through the last century (Kant s predecessors and successors in philosophy) are discussed with special treatment of their philosophical and epistemological relationships with Kant s insights.
