2 The Human Condition On what basis does an artist decide what is important? He decides by reference to his most fundamental assumptions about man and the world, - beliefs about the nature of reality - judgments about the nature of the world (or reality) and man s relationship to it. Is reality a stable environment in which things happen according to natural law or is it a place in which the inexplicable occurs? Does man have free will with the ability to steer the course of his life or is he predetermined to act as he does and thus incapable of directing his actions? Is the world conducive to man s success and happiness or is man doomed to failure and misery? For millennia, philosophers have discussed such questions and attempted to provide answers. Artists address the same issues, but they show rather than tell. Complete Body of Work 1 that reflects the concept: The Human Condition: This unit explores the view that art is the external expression of the mind s eye. A work of art incarnates meaning in concrete form. Artists reveal the human condition by providing a lens through which we see ourselves and our world. Intrinsic human values are revealed using media, techniques and technology through various contexts and elicit student responses to articulate a personal aesthetic leading to one or more resolved artworks. Researching and analysing evidence (artists/ideas). Developing your ideas by generating solutions to the problem. Resolving solutions by communicating individual visual responses. Reflecting on your outcomes for each of the previous phases by making links to your and to the artists works you have researched and analysed. What can be in a body of work? 2 D and 3 D works from observations, exercises, experiments, artist research and discussions, personal reflections/annotations from personally chosen media or the media suggested above. When developing your Body of Work through the focus/contexts you should consider the following: Be aware of the concept, focuses and contexts and follow a pathway logically, sometimes veer off the path to explore further avenues, but rejoin it to formulate/resolve your personal aesthetic. Aim toward a purposeful and sustained (long term) engagement with the concept in both making and appraising tasks through the exploration of media experiments and art making practices. Experiment with media (materials, processes, techniques and technologies) developing an exploration of the focuses and contexts. How can your choice of media and use of the elements and principles of design best enhance your body of work. Research 2-D and digital artworks from a wide range of artists that depict different expressions of the listed focuses and in the associated contexts. Identify why and how the artist expresses the focuses through the concept.

Read the Making 4 task sheet ask questions to improve your comprehension of what is required, after reading the complete task sheet Class/Homework through the unit Paste / attach this task sheet into your visual diary at back. (Your teacher will tick off as completed) 2. Collect and analyse a variety of quotes made by key philosophers select several and annotate to make them relevant to your own experiences and observations at least 5 pages required a quote and your notes for each page Create a title page The Human Condition Write initial thoughts as bullet points (Deep thinking essential but also consider presentation you are a visual art student) 3. Read the papers on evil versus good art On at least one page record those comments that interest you or have made you think how your art might be positive or good. 4. Discuss and experiment with options for expressing various techniques physical, intellectual, spiritual, cultural, emotional, Research artists from the handouts/list on this task sheet download images of their art works and paste into VAPD / or make a thumbnail sketch of the art work annotate to record the aspect of The Human Condition which interested you Record the artists name, the title and date of the art work and media and process taken to make it, for each artwork (Mrs McClelland will only make printouts for you if you have images or material already stored and identified on your USB) Paste an image of each artwork in your VAPD, and write one paragraph describing how the artist has dealt with their central concept. Annotate to record the aspect of The Human Condition that you might explore - Make concept sketches of ideas that came to you, or annotate ideas in bullet point form. A suggestion/challenge is it possible to subvert or appropriate an artwork to alter the meaning to put a positive spin on another issue by utilising the structure of the artwork?? Document this information in your VAPD two full pages at least These notes and pastiches/experiments/explorations

4 finding examples of artists works that express attitudes and values. Develop formal and informal display options for an installation with sound and light. 7. Develop and resolve a body of work by extended focus on the concept and context you have defined. Further resolve your work to affect excellence in the execution of media and to refine the communication of meaning. This may mean being more subtle, using a media in an abstract way by being less literal the Less is More principle. Is there anything that can be left out? Is there a more direct expression possible? This is about aesthetics the look of your art. Carefully consider the embellishment of your resolved pieces. Should they be varnished, bronzed, sanded, coated with other material...? What about display options? on a pedestal? In a cabinet or cage or hanging from the ceiling? Be sure that each decision is directly relevant to the concept you are expressing. Perhaps the very process can become the focus now limiting the inquiry to a deeper exploration of the media and your activity with it? Should the installation, painting, print be lit? Candle? Lighting?? Where should it be displayed? In the bush and photographed? In the trees at school? Handing off a building? Or in a more traditional display place? Write an artist statement to accompany the display of your resolved pieces. will involve media Make a list of media you will gather/explore for next lesson. You will begin to develop your practical outcomes at this stage Document your journey with regular reflections. Research new art works to inform the resolution of your art work. How do you feel you defined your visual problem? How do you feel you creatively solved the problem? Were you innovative in your selection and manipulation of media? What were some of the discoveries you made whilst focusing on solving design/visual problems? How do you feel your journey is documented to show the flow of ideas? Do your ideas link together and to the artists you studied? Word process your artist statement and paste it in your VAPD this will be a summary of your journey from defining of the problem to resolution in visual form FOCUS: CONTEXT: 8. Ensure your visual diary is complete before the due date. Hand in your visual diary with your entire body of work. Your teacher will photograph your resolved pieces.
