It gives you a fresh perspective on life. Makes you rethink you way around language and sometimes it makes you smile. Is your new book as focused as the single word title might suggest? I almost believe that the universe is a cow!! It would have been much shorter, because the cow in India is everywhere. I would never have found the number of images or metaphors. I think it would be a much more mundane book. What was your favourite moment in India this time? One of my many favourite moments was when a young woman about 16 in a temple asked me if I wanted to see God. I had to say yes. Is there a poem about it? How did this visit change your writing? It changed my writing because I read a lot about Tamil Sangam poetry and that became part of the structure of Cow. Also because I had almost a year away from my day job, I had time to explore all sorts of different poetic approached. I wrote a poem a day for the year and just that kind of regularity of writing means that you get to try lots of things. Some of them made the collection, some will never!! How did the writing change you? How did it change me? I think it has given me more confidence as a poet. The editing experience has also been really good. I worked with Jordie Albiston and her responses made me work harder, and turned a few medium poems into good poems. Is there a particular Indian poet we should all be reading? Everyone should read Sangam poems from odd years ago. The body - and then the voice - is the best pen for aerial poetry. How does Australian poetry look from up there? I think Australian poetry is really healthy â lots of experimentation and some truly wonderful writing. Pity so few ever make it into international markets. He writes about the realistic rhythms of life, lust, love and loss. The Muses The Muses were the Greek goddesses of poetic inspiration, the adored deities of song, dance, and memory, on whose mercy the creativity, wisdom and insight of all artists and thinkers depended. They may have been originally three in number, but, according to Hesiod and the prevailing tradition he established, most commonly they are depicted as the nine daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne. However, two ancient lyric poets, claim otherwise: Some later authors have even tried to reconcile the stories, proposing two different generations of Muses. Most commonly, it was thought that the Muses were born in Pieria at the foot of Mount Olympus, so they were often called either Olympian or Pierian Muses. Number, Names, Attributes, and Domains Depending on the region where they were celebrated, both the names and the number of Muses varied. There are various accounts of five, seven and even eight Muses. However, they are most often either three probably in earlier reports or nine following Hesiod and maybe Homer. Later poets, however, used the Hesiodic names as a foundation for further differentiation, so they distributed the Muses among diverse realms, attaching to each of them different attributes and powers. The order in which we presented the Muses here is not the order they are usually given in. However, we chose it for a reason: The Muses in Particular Myths Other than divine inspirers in the verses of the poets, the Muses appear rarely in myths ; and when they do, they are usually much less gentle revelers than diving avengers. Revelers Presided over by Apollo, the Muses spent much of their time on Olympus cheerfully singing and dancing at the feasts of the gods. Sometimes they also came down to earth, so as to either mourn a funeral like that of Achilles or celebrate a marriage like those of Peleus to Thetis and Cadmus to Harmonia. Avengers Protective of their status, the Muses were not above punishing anyone who dared to challenge their skill. Finally, the Macedonian king Pierus dared the Muses to a contest against his nine daughters, who, after their defeat, were transformed into prattling magpies. The Sons of the Muses Even though usually described as virgin goddesses, the Muses seemed like the perfect candidates for mothers of few mythical musicians and dancers. Consequently, Orpheus was often identified as the son of Calliope, as were sometimes the Sirens, who were more commonly linked to either Terpsichore or Melpomene. Linus, the great musician and orator of Thrace, was fathered by Apollo with either Calliope or Urania, and the Corybantes were usually described as sons of Thalia. In addition, Hyacinthus was thought of as the son of Clio, and Rhesus as the son of either Calliope or Euterpe. Page 2

Both were female figures known for being singers of beautiful songs. The sirens were chthonic and sang to trap men and destroy them. All the arts were believed to come from the muses; including skills such as writing poems, interpreting the stars, and singing. It is appropriate that their mother was the goddess of memory. Dance was considered as an equally important art as poetry and songs, possibly because it could be used as a physical demonstration of past stories. She is still associated with dance today. This is reflected in the adjective terpsichorean which refers to things related to dance. The importance of Terpsichore and the other muses in Greek thought illustrates the importance of music in Greek culture. In ancient Greece, music was considered the mark of a civilized man. Music, however, was broader than just what is thought of as music today. Music also covered dance and poetry in addition to instrumental music and singing. Although the Muses were closely associated with their artistic spheres, they also had an existence beyond it. Terpsichore, for example, was also a mother and a wife. In later mythology, she became the mother of several sirens including Parthenope by the river god Achelous. Because of this, they appear to have been more than mere abstract entities to the ancient Greeks. Today, Terpsichore is used often as a metaphor for, or personification of, dance. Terpsichore is also invoked in subjects beyond dance that have a sort of ordered movement or rhythm. Terpsichore, Muse of Choral Song and Dance. The planets orbit the sun and the sun, with other stars, orbits the center of the Milky Way galaxy. Additionally, the planets go through cycles called Milankovitch cycles in which their orbits around the sun adjust in very regular, periodic, or rhythmic, ways. Furthermore, electromagnetic and mechanical oscillations, such as a pendulum in a clock, are also very common in nature. If these regular, ordered patterns of movement in the universe could be thought of as a sort of natural dance, then these natural movements could be thought of as terpsichorean in a sense. It also can be seen in the observable universe. The nature of sediments can vary in a cyclic fashion, and these cycles can be displayed in the sedimentary record. Ever since, the Muses supported and encouraged creation, enhancing imagination and inspiration of the artists. Muses and Arts According to the Greek Mythology, two Muses invented theory and practice in learning, three Muses invented the musical vibrations in Lyre, four Muses invented the four known dialects in the language â Attica, Ionian, Aeolian and Dorian â and five muses the five human senses. Seven muses invented the seven chords of the lyre, the seven celestial zones, the seven planets and the seven vocals of the Greek Alphabet. Analytically the Nine Muses are: The Muse Clio discovered history and guitar. Clio was always represented with a clarion in the right arm and a book in the left hand. Muse Euterpe discovered several musical instruments, courses and dialectic. She was always depicted holding a flute, while many instruments were always around her. Muse Thalia was the protector of comedy; she discovered comedy, geometry, architectural science and agriculture. She was also protector of Symposiums. She was always depicted holding a theatrical â comedy mask. Opposite from Thalia, Muse Melpomene was the protector of Tragedy; she invented tragedy, rhetoric speech and Melos. She was depicted holding a tragedy mask and usually bearing a bat. Terpsichore was the protector of dance; she invented dances, the harp and education. She was depicted wearing laurels on her head, holding a harp and dancing. Muse Erato was the protector of Love and Love Poetry â as well as wedding. She was depicted holding a lyre and love arrows and bows. Muse Polymnia was the protector of the divine hymns and mimic art; she invented geometry and grammar. She was depicted looking up to the Sky, holding a lyre. Muse Ourania was the protector of the celestial objects and stars; she invented astronomy. She was always depicted bearing stars, a celestial sphere and a bow compass. Muse Calliope was the superior Muse. She was accompanying kings and princes in order to impose justice and serenity. She was the protector of heroic poems and rhetoric art. According to the myth, Homer asks from Calliope to inspire him while writing Iliad and Odyssey, and, thus, Calliope is depicted holding laurels in one hand and the two Homeric poems in the other hand. The Nine Muses have been inspiring artists since the antiquity and there countless paintings, drawings, designs, poems and statues dedicated to them.
