Eliot in poetry and literary criticism, are the high priests of High Modernism. The 20 th century saw two world wars, and the intervening period saw the explosion of a new, Modernist current, in reaction to the Victorian Age in the case of the UK. The year 1922 saw the publication of James Joyce s Ulysses, the greatest novel of the century, and T.S. Eliot s The Waste Land, the most influential poem of the century. These works of immense intellectual and artistic complexity, in tandem with other works authored by them, showcase Modernism at the highest point of potency as both difficult and great literature. The course aims at an advanced study of complex literary texts. The course samples masterpieces of a literature of discontinuity and a tradition of the new wherein a stream of consciousness presentation of personality and reliance on the poetic image and myth are essential vehicles of esthetic communication. The close reading of Joyce and Eliot will enable students to: 1) map out the Modernist literature which became a mainstream canon in Europe and the US, an international phenomenon which did not arise from separate national literary traditions. 1

2 2) grapple with literature and literary scholarship of the highest order; 3) prepare them for eventual PhD studies in literature; 4) put their expertise in literary scholarship, interpretative and analytical skills to the ultimate test.
