He was diagnosed with shell shock and was brought to Craiglockheart where he met Siegfried Sassoon who served as a mentor for him. His poems illustrated the horrors of warfare, the physical landscapes which surrounded him and the human body in relation to those landscapes. It seemd like Owen was speaking from the other side of the grave. He was the medium through whom the missing spoke. Siegfried Sassoon : He had reckless courage and gained the nickname Mad Jack. He frequently criticises the incompetence of those who conduct the war and the lack of concern of those at home. By Wilfred Owen. Like so many of the later poems, Owen s tone in this poem is one of helplessness and despair. Suffering appears to be pointless. I am going to talk about. 4 -Wilfred was against war, he saw it as a struggle between imperial powers looking to expand their lands. -Owen was a master in alliteration and assonance -His poems were to show to the intolerant world, the foolishness, unnaturalness, horror and inhumanity of war. - Owens talent: his ability to convey his complex messages about war so that a person without any prior knowledge of war could understand -He uses many details of war in his poetry to show scenes that are horrific and memorable -Poems were often over dramatized with the horror of battle yet it was highly thought-provoking - His use of speech and present tense gives his poems direction as well as a sense of urgency. Moreover, it is these techniques that help to underline the message of his poems. -Owen's style of writing is best known for his use of half-rhyme which gives his poetry a dissonant and provoking quality that shadows the recurrent themes of his poetry. -Furthermore, his ability to give a poem a quiet tone comes from his use of assonance and different sounds prevalent to war. For example, in his poems it was as the speaker was whispering his message to the audience. Therefore because of this ability he does not use physically horrific imagery but mentally tormenting ideas to support his writing. - Poems make us relive it through one person s eye - His self-appointed task was to speak for the men in his care, to show the pity of war. Owen s enduring and influential poetry is evidence of his bleak realism, his energy and indignation, his compassion and his great technical skill. What can you talk about? 5 so cheerful about war To eros This poem shows quilt and sacrifice 1914 Owen says that during the war, feelings are out of sight and the most important thing is to win the war. He also says that war is especially harsh during the winter. Happiness In this poem, a soldier, is talking to other soldiers, telling each other how good their lives were in the recent past. After this, the poem states that those times are past and they now have to live in terror. The dead-beat Ironic as dead cannot beat > written in dialect > more direct because dialect makes contrast with patriotic poems. Aim: to show the consequences of war, next to getting wounded, people get mentally ill and at that point, they won t be useful anymore. This poem is addressed to the soldiers to tell and to warn them about what can happen. Also Owen wants to show the people at home what happens to soldiers during the war. Anthem for doomed youth Ironic as anthem is usually associated with triumph. Owen makes a catalogue of the sound of war in the first stanza. He gives a description of soldiers who are being slaughtered on the battlefield, comparing them to cattle (no one cares about them anymore). Disabled and post-war life This poem shows the meaningless and wastage of war, it s a description of an injured man. The main character thinks he did not live the life he should have lived and casts a light on everything he has lost. 6 Theme: perspectives In this poem, Owen criticises religion and stresses the fact that no one cares when a soldier dies. Insensibility ; insensibility in war a blessing or a curse Sarcastic poem Owen says that men are better off being insensible. It is better to rely on chance because they are always living in doubt about when they will die. Some soldiers become immune to the situation and are better off not feeling. Exposure Theme: war and nature> he suggests the beauty of nature in contrast to the horror of war Stanza s are continuous showing the continuous suffering Arms and the boy War forces people to change. Soldiers are like little boys in the field who don t know what to do. Mental cases Emphasises emptiness, they are not really people anymore Animalistic to shock readers He shows that the soldiers are neither dead nor alive.
