2 The Festival celebrates Charlie Chaplin s start in film 101 years ago: The Festival and the State Library NSW are proud to present on Sunday February 1 at 2pm Australian premieres of digital restorations of 3 of Charlie s classic silent short comedies made at the Essanay Studios in Charlie s genius captivated and enchanted audiences around the world within a very short period of time. That relationship has never ended. The whole world claims Charlie as its own: the qualities in his roles as director, actor and composer are timeless and universal. Chaplinitis is alive and well in Australia and there is no known cure!

5 Work (1915) 28 minutes Charlie and his boss have a bad day at work, trying to wallpaper a house. They already have trouble getting there in the first place, and the occupants of the house don t make things easier! A leaking gas stove brings all the confusion to a dramatic end! Barbara Underwood Bioscope wrote: The humour is designed to rise in a long crescendo of screams to a climax of roars. Positively, the thing is irresistible. New York Dramatic Mirror wrote: Chaplin s evolution of what is known as slapstick (continues) only the Chaplin way of doing this is unexpected and even further is delivered in a somewhat new way. So with his feet, his insouciance and his every mannerism, which is ridicule directed at himself.

After being pursued by two men into a house our Charlie goes upstairs as a man and comes down as a woman and the chasers find him very attractive. And the chaos begins. Bioscope wrote: Charlie is in truth so perfectly indescribable. He is an artist whose genius needs no explanation. This film is something of a novelty in Chaplins..Charlie is seen therein attired as a female.a very coy and comely young person.

9 New York Dramatic Mirror wrote: This film opens up a new field of humour for him and one that should be as successful as the peculiar style that has gained him his immense popularity. Charlie is in truth so perfectly indescribable.

11 The Tramp (1915) 26 minutes

12 Charlie in his famous role of the tramp saves Edna from thieves, and with high romantic hopes, goes to her father's farm to find work. But the Tramp is just not cut out for such work, causing hilarious havoc everywhere until the thieves return and he once again runs them off. Barbara Underwood Bioscope wrote: Chaplin s art, as all his multitudinous followers know, has no bad patches. An exceptionally hard worker, his natural genius is always seen to the best advantage..when you go to see a Chaplin comedy you know that you will get your full measure of merriment down to the very last foot and The Tramp is as good as any of them.
