1 1 st st Grade Poem Recitations Poem recitations are a tradition at Legacy. Each grading period your child will choose a poem from those provided below. Your child will be required to memorize and recite their poem in front of the class on an assigned day and parents are invited to attend their child s poetry recitation. Poems will be graded according to the following criteria: 1. Posture: a. Stands up straight in the front of the room. b. Faces the class. 2. Accuracy: a. Recites words fluently. b. Recites all the words in the poem. 3. Voice: a. Speaks loudly. b. Clearly pronounces words. 4. Audience Appeal: a. Uses eye contact. b. Displays enthusiasm. 1 st st Grade (1( st grading period) Little Tooth One I had a little tooth That wobbled every day When I ate and when I talked, It wiggled every way. Then I had some candy- A sticky taffy roll; Now where my wiggly tooth was- Is nothing but a hole.

2 One, Two, Buckle My Shoe One, two, Buckle my shoe; Three, four, Knock at the door; Five, six Pick up sticks; Seven, eight, Lay them straight; Nine, ten, A good, fat hen; Eleven, twelve, Dig and Delve Thirteen, fourteen, Maids a-courting; Fifteen, Sixteen, Maids in the kitchen Seventeen, Eighteen, Maids a-waiting; Nineteen, twenty, My plate s empty. The End When I was One, I had just begun. When I was Two, I was nearly new. When I was Three, I was hardly me. When I was Four, I was not much more. When I was Five, I was just alive. But now I m six, I m as clever as clever. So I think I ll be six now and for ever and ever.

7 Thy name I love; I love thy rocks and rills, Thy woods and templed hills; My heart with rapture thrills, Like that above. George Washington Everybody knows the story of the cherry tree- His father asked, Who cut this down? And young George answered, Me! There are a lot of other things George Washington did do: Like making maps, and farming, and he was a soldier, too! He was our country s president, the very first we had. We will always remember George Washington, as he made our hearts so glad. The Canary Mary had a little bird, With feathers bright and yellow, Slender legs-upon my word, He was a pretty fellow! Sweetest notes he always sung, Which much delighted Mary; Often where his cage was hung, She sat to hear Canary. Crumbs of bread and dainty seeds She carried to him daily, Seeking for the early weeds, She decked his palace gaily. That's a couple more. 3 and 3 are 6. We can build with sticks. 4 and 4 are 8. Your date is at the gate. 5 and 5 are 10. Feed the big red hen. 6 and 6 are 12. We can ring the bell. 7 and 7 are 14. We love Michael Jordan. 8 and 8 are 16. The stew Jessie is mixing. 9 and 9 are 18. A picture we are painting. 10 and 10 are 20. We like good and plenty!

10 1 st st Grade (6th grading period) Only One Mother Hundreds of stars in the pretty sky. Hundreds of shells on the shore together Hundreds of birds that go singing by Hundreds of lambs in the sunny weather. Hundreds of dewdrops to greet the dawn, Hundreds of bees in the purple clover, Hundreds of butterflies on the lawn, But only one mother the wide world over. School When school lets out in June, I feel As happy as can be, I hop and skip and jump and run And shout and laugh with glee.
