2 The Big Dipper by Phyllis Krasilovsky 1 Benny lived in Alaska many years before it was a state. He had black hair and bright black eyes. He always had a happy, friendly smile. 2 Sometimes before going to sleep at night, he would look at the stars outside the window. He would long for the day when he could be a grown up. For then, he was going to be a fine fisherman. 3 Benny looked at the Big Dipper. He knew it was part of the Great Bear of the night sky. He found the North Star, the star that did not move in the sky. One day, when Benny was a fisherman, he would use the North Star to help bring the boat safely back to land at night. Benny knew that the North Star was the star of Alaska. 4 One day at school the teacher told the children about a contest. 5 Alaska does not have a flag, she said. So we are holding a contest. Children from all over Alaska are making pictures of flags. The best picture will be made into Alaska s flag. 6 Benny wanted very much to do well in the contest. He thought how great it would be to see his flag in a parade. He thought how great it would be to see his flag flying on the fishing boat he would have one day. 7 That night Benny sat quietly, thinking about the flag. He thought of what he loved most about Alaska. All at once, Benny knew what the flag must look like. He wanted the flag to be like the stars he loved gold stars like the Big Dipper in the dark blue sky. So that is what he painted. 8 Under the picture he put, The North Star is for the state of Alaska. The Big Dipper is for the Great Bear standing for a strong state. 9 Benny didn t show the paper to his friends. The next day, he gave it to the teacher. 2/12

3 10 One day, when school was almost over, the teacher called the children together. Children, she said, the flag contest is over. From all over Alaska boys and girls have sent in pictures for the flag. And... boys and girls! Benny s picture was the best! From now on, Benny s picture will be Alaska s flag. 11 How proud and happy Benny was! And how very proud he was on the Fourth of July. On that day there was a big parade. People came from all over Alaska to see it. 12 The very first thing they saw was Benny. Benny was walking at the head of the parade. In his hands was the flag he had made for the fishing boat he would have one day. It was the flag he had made for Alaska. 4 Two Neighbors 1 There lived two neighbors who were as different as the sea and the mountains. Maria was selfish. Luisa was giving. 2 Maria and Luisa went for a walk. They saw a beautiful gold and green bird. The bird sat on a branch and watched the girls. 3 That bird will be mine, said Maria. 4 Maria hurried after the bird and Luisa followed. 5 The bird landed on a branch next to two purple and silver birds that were more beautiful than it. 6 These birds are more beautiful than the first bird. Help me catch them! yelled Maria. 7 But Luisa did not try to catch them. Although strange, the birds seemed to be playing with Maria. Soon the green and gold bird joined the other birds. They circled above Maria s head, just out of her reach. 8 Oh Luisa, I can just feel it! shouted Maria. I am going to catch all three birds. 9 But instead of listening to Maria, Luisa stared at a beautiful pond. The water was green, gold, purple, and silver the same colors as the birds! Luisa saw the birds leading Maria closer to the pond. 10 Maria, be careful! yelled Luisa. 11 But in all of her greed, Maria did not hear Luisa and fell in the pond. When she crawled out of the pond, the birds were gone and Maria s hair had turned green, gold, purple, and silver. From that day on, she never wanted for much of anything else. 6 Two Brothers 1 Bill and Earl were brothers. Bill enjoyed playing tricks on people. Earl did not. One day, the brothers went to gather strawberries from a field. There they saw an old woman holding a basket of beautiful strawberries. 2 These strawberries are heavy. Please help me carry them to town, she said. 3 Bill whispered to his brother, I am going to trick the old woman by switching our basket of dirt for her strawberries. 4 Earl didn t like Bill s trick. Bill turned to the old woman. We will help. Let us pick our strawberries first. 5 Being wise, the old woman said, I ll wait here for you. 6 As Bill rushed to get dirt for the basket, Earl kindly picked the best strawberries. When they had finished, Bill s pile was much bigger than Earl s. 7 When they returned, the old woman saw that Earl was unhappy. 8 Did you boys do your best work? the woman asked. 9 Yes, said the brothers. 10 Then you may get what you worked for, said the woman. 11 Once in town, the old woman smiled at the boys and said, You may keep these strawberries. 12 Bill grabbed the good strawberries from Earl and ran toward home. Earl sighed. 13 Don t feel sad, said the woman. 14 Just then, Earl saw hundreds of ants crawl out of Bill s basket. He then looked into his basket. In place of the dirt were beautiful strawberries. When Earl turned around, the old woman had disappeared and a beautiful rainbow stood over the field of strawberries. 6/12

8 The Cracked Chinese Jug by Carolyn Han 1 Each morning Han Han fetched water for his village from the river. He placed a bamboo shoulder pole across his back and put the empty jugs on either side. 2 When Han Han returned to the village, he had one and a half jugs of water. One clay jug had a tiny crack, and some of its water had leaked out. 3 The perfect jug was proud of itself. It had carried a full load of water. But the imperfect jug was embarrassed. It had done only half of the work. 4 One day the cracked jug could stand it no longer. I m a failure, it cried. Why do I have a crack? 5 Ignoring the jug s cry, Han Han carefully filled both jugs with water at the river. By the time they reached the village, the cracked jug was again only half full. Why don t you throw me away? asked the broken jug. 6 Han Han smiled at the jugs and put them on the shelf. 7 The next morning when Han Han placed the jugs on the ends of his shoulder pole, he said to the broken one, For months, I ve heard you complain. 8 I m ashamed of myself, answered the cracked jug. I m worthless. 8/12

9 9 Today when we return to the village, I want you to look along the path, said Han Han. 10 It was the first time the broken jug noticed the flowers. The colorful flowers made the cracked jug very happy. But then it remembered its crack and the leaking water, and again it felt sad. 11 What did you think of the flowers? asked Han Han. 12 They re pretty, replied the jug. They re only growing on my side of the path. 13 That s right, said Han Han. For months you ve watered the wildflower seeds. Your failure, as you call it, has changed our village and made it more beautiful. 14 Then all that time I felt useless, said the cracked jug, my flaw was really my most valuable part! The Cracked Chinese Jug by Carolyn Han, copyright 2003 by Carolyn Han. Used by permission of the author. Question #8 What is the MAIN theme of the story? A) Continue to do what you know is best. B) Follow your dreams of completing your goals. C) Give yourself time to enjoy the beauty around you. D) Your weaknesses can sometimes be your strengths. Question #9 How does the path change from the beginning to the end of the story? A) The villagers spread seeds on the sides of the path. B) The river floods over and covers the path. C) The wildflowers have grown along a side of the path. D) The villagers have made the path longer. 9/12
