It is your responsibility to ensure that you do not have any unauthorised notes or other items of a non-personal nature in the examination room. If you have any unauthorised material with you, hand it to the supervisor BEFORE reading any further. All ipads and mobile phones must be turned off and in your bag along with any other devices and notes. Bags are to be closed and placed under the desk. INSTRUCTION TO CANDIDATES 1. Read through the paper to familiarise yourself with all of the questions. 2. Use a blue or black ballpoint/ink pen. Do not answer in pencil. AT THE END OF THE EXAMINATION - Any planning sheets or other pieces of paper MUST be handed in with this booklet. - At the end of the examination make sure that your name is on your booklet and any other pieces of paper used.

Make sure you write the number of the question being answered. 2. Write your answers to each section in the appropriate section of this exam booklet. Section 1: Write on lined pages Section 2: Colour the appropriate letter/bibble next to each question. 3. You must be careful to confine your responses to the specific questions asked and to follow any instructions that are specific to a particular question. If you fail to comply you will be penalised. Do not turn the page until you are asked to do so.

3 SECTION ONE: WRITING Allow 50 mins for this section (40 marks) Answer the question for the novel you studied in class. CHINESE CINDERELLA The novel Chinese Cinderella is described as the secret story of an Unwanted Daughter. As the reader do you feel a connection to this character? Why/why not? Explain and support this statement using evidence from the novel listed below and situations from your life. If you had not been born, Mama would still be alive. She died because of you. You are bad luck. (pg 3) I was winning the medal every week and wearing it constantly it was the only way to make father take notice and be proud of me. (pg 16) To her we are not separate people. Over here, we have become one single unit known as all of you. (pg 28) One by one they were greeted and led away by anxious mothers. Nobody came for me. (pg 30) They didn t know that, in front of them, I was desperate to keep up the pretence that I came from a normal, loving family. (pg 63) I took the duckling to my heart it comforted me to know I was needed. (pg 84) Now they knew the pathetic truth! Unwanted and unloved by my parents! How long did take for a person to die of shame? (pg 129) I felt I was part of the Schilling family and no longer the unwanted daughter who always came last. (pg 161) For once, he was proud of me My whole being vibrated with all the joy in the world. (pg 220) BOY OVERBOARD The novel Boy Overboard is described as an incredible journey of hope, bravery and survival. As the reader do you feel a connection to the protagonist, Jamal? Why/why not? Explain and support this statement using evidence from the novel listed below and situations from your life. This is what a desert warrior would do, I tell myself. Desert warriors didn t run away from a bit of danger. If their ball got wedged under a tank, they d just go and get it. (pg13) As I take her arm and drag her towards the village, I start to feel better. We ve survived. We re not dead. (pg22) In the painting I don t look like a baker, I look like a dessert warrior. I dry my tears. Suddenly I m determined to do it. Find a way for us to stay. (pg37) If I can become the star of the Afghanistan national soccer team, perhaps that ll make all of us more popular, not just me and Dad and Bibi. (pg42) Whatever happens, this family will always be together. We may not be in Manchester, but we will always be united. (pg51) I can see she s struggling not to cry. While we eat I try and cheer up with stories of some of the best goals I ve seen. (pg56) I don t know how I m going to do it, but I ve got to stop them shooting Mum. (pg63) Never give up, I say to myself, even when things are looking hopeless. (pg82) With no candlestick to look after us, we re going to have to look after each other. (pg101) But I m not a dessert warrior. I m just a kid trying to keep his family in one piece. (pg118) For the millionth time since we set sail, I remind myself why we re doing this. Freezing on a hard deck all night. Roasting all day. Watching poor little children and old people suffer even more than us. ( pg130)
