4 The Slovak Asociation of Animated Film Producers (APAF), the Film and Television Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava (FTF VŠMU) and Fest Anča International Animation Festival join forces once again this year, by organizing activities with the aim to boost conditions for professional animation in Slovakia, in line with the general objectives of VAF (visegradanimation.com). After last year s great feedback to the Masterclass entitled PRODUCTION PIPELINE, which concentrated on animated series and feature films, we have decided to shift our focus to the importance of the development process in auteur film. This year s Masterclass will be dedicated to script writing and script editing of animated projects of students, as well as established artists and producers. The main idea is to offer auteurs the tools and skills they need for the development of their animated films. This masterclass is part of a year-long programme for FTF VŠMU students. There is a constant shortage of animated film script writers in Slovakia and in Central Europe in general. And that s exactly why this programme aims to bring students of scriptwriting and students of animation together the teams w i l l wo r k o n s t u d e n t p r o j e c t s, s i m u l a t i n g t h e d eve l o p m e n t p r o c ess s t u d e n t s w i l l e n c o u n t e r i n t h e f u t u re on professional films. We are delighted that the Masterclass will be led by the renowned animated content expert Barbara Slade from the UK. Barbara is an experienced animated film script writer and producer, and has chaired numerous professional pitching events such as Cartoon Forum and Cartoon Movie. She will share her knowledge with students in her plenary talks, and through individual feedback on project pitchings. We are confident that her practical insights will inspire students, as well as increase the quality of their films. We also hope that this collaborative experience will assist students of animated film in preparing for their professional careers, and encourage future cooperation with script writers. The masterclass will continue in June 2018 at the Fest Anča International Animation Festival in Žilina. One part of the masterclass will be open to a wider audience of film professionals, as we believe that meeting an expert like Barbara Slade will inspire not only students of animated film, but professional filmmakers from Slovakia and abroad as well. 5 APAF (apaf.sk) represents Slovakia within the framework of the international consortium of animated film producer associations that organise the Visegrad Animation Forum (VAF). APAF strives to connect the activities of Slovak animation with the wider context of Central and East European and European animated film, since several years. VAF (visegradanimation.com) is today a well-established platform that supports the growth of the animated film industry in cooperation with Cartoon - the biggest European animated film organisation. Cartoon (cartoon-media.eu) takes patronage over many year-round activities that encourage the animated film industry s development. Its main activities include Cartoon Forum (animated series presentation), Cartoon Movie (feature films presentation), Cartoon 360 (transmedia projects presentation), Cartoon Connection (with a Canada and Asia focus), and Cartoon Masters (aimed at animated film producers and trainers). APAF s activities are supported by the Slovak Audiovisual Fund, and VAF activities are cofinanced with the support of the MEDIA sub-programme of Creative Europe. BARBARA SLADE Barbara Slade is a T.V. and Film writer, creator and Exec. Producer. Born in Los Angeles but now based in London, England. Barbara has worked in the animation industry for over twenty years with credits on series such as Rugrats, Winnie the Pooh, Angelina Ballerina, Little Shop of Horrors and Rotten Ralph. She created and produced several original series such as Dead Gorgeous (CBBC/ABC/Nickelodeon) and Hi Opie (TVO/Netflix) and has won numerous awards. Barbara has a strong reputation in the International market and travels extensively, consulting with production companies and T.V. channels. She has worked with the Disney Channel UK, Super RTL in Germany, and over the past four years has worked in Norway, heading up writing teams on several prime time productions. Barbara has been a judge on numerous panels, is a Chairperson for Cartoon Forum and Cartoon Movie and teaches and lectures around the world. A5_MASTERCLASS_02.indd :18:22
