The studio has also raked in another $1 billion-plus at the international box office for calendar 2013 to date, the company announced Monday. Boosted by the massive success of the second installment of the Hunger Games franchise, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and Summit s sleeper smash Now You See Me, Lionsgate grossed an estimated $1.025 billion at the domestic box office through Sunday, Dec. 22, and another $1.227 billion at the foreign box office for a worldwide total of $2.252 billion. It ranks among the top six studios with domestic box office market The Hunger Games: Catching Fire has earned $372 million domestically to date and is currently the second highest-grossing movie of share of nearly 10 percent for the year to date. Our strong box-office performance for the second year in a row, domestically and internationally, underscores the consistency of our film slate and is a testament to the tireless efforts of our entire motion picture team, said Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer and vice chairman Michael Burns in a joint state- see page 2 The hollywood RepoRTeR edition for ipad The weekly magazine content you love, designed and enhanced for an interactive ipad experience. free To print SUBSCRiBeRS special introductory offers available. Catching Fire, starring Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson, has already collected an estimated $372 million domestically, the second highest-grossing pic of 2013, and $393 million abroad for a worldwide total of $765 million in its first five weeks of release. It has already outperformed the global run of the first Hunger Games film ($691 million). Now You See Me, which follows a group of magicians, opened as a surprise hit in September and has grossed $352 million worldwide. Instructions Not Included, from Lionsgate s Pantelion Films, became the highestgrossing Spanish-language movie ever released in the U.S. after it hit theaters in late August. Other 2013 Lionsgate pics include Ender s Game, Tyler Perry s A Madea Christmas, Warm Bodies and Red 2. Internationally, Lionsgate achieved its best year ever in China, releasing six films which grossed an estimated $116.3 million at the Chinese box office to date and captured approximately 8 percent of the foreign-film box-office market share. NO DAILY The Hollywood Reporter will not publish a Daily PDF edition Dec. 25- Jan. 2. The next Daily edition will be Jan. 3. THR s McCarthy Names 10 Best movies of 2013 By Todd McCarthy It was clear that 2013 stood a strong chance of being an exceptionally good year for movies especially American films by the time the Cannes Film Festival concluded in late May. For the first time I could remember, I liked all the U.S. features in the main competition: Inside Llewyn Davis, Behind the Candelabra, Nebraska, The Immigrant and Only Lovers Left Alive. Out of competition or in special slots were All Is Lost, The Great Gatsby and Seduced and Abandoned. And this came on the heels of a Sundance Film Festival that had yielded Before Midnight, Fruitvale Station, Ain t Them Bodies Saints, Kill Your Darlings, In a World..., The Spectacular Now and Upstream Color, along with a raft of strong documentaries. A couple of these were destined for HBO and two others won t be released until next year, but the two festivals provided an accurate barometer for the fine year it ended up being. As the diverse winners from the early critics groups and the eyebrow-raising Guild and Golden Globe nominations suggest, there aren t one or two absolutely dominant films this year but, rather, a spreading of the wealth, even an embarrassment of riches resulting in some snubs no matter what. Folk-music tale Inside Llewyn Davis had its world premiere in May at the Cannes Film Festival. How often can we say that? In some years, it s a struggle to come up with even 10 films I can enthusiastically stand behind. This year, the top 10 are very close in quality, with at least 15 more that I find nearly as strong. And they are nearly all American. Usually my best-of list is closer to 50/50 U.S. and foreign but, for whatever reason, international directors en masse didn t deliver as strongly this year. On the evidence, then, I would suggest that reports of the demise, or serious illness, of the American cinema to be greatly exaggerated. More or less in order of preference, here are my favorites for 2013: 1. Inside Llewyn Davis 2. Her 3. Gravity 4. Frances Ha 5. American Hustle 6. Dallas Buyers Club 7. The Wolf of Wall Street 8. Short Term Leviathan 10. Nebraska. Click here to read more about each of the 10 movies. (The following films represented more highlights of a very good year: The Great Beauty, Fill the Void, Ginger & Rosa, Stories We Tell, Blue Is the Warmest Color, Enough Said, 12 Years a Slave, The Invisible Woman, Before Midnight, All Is Lost, Prisoners, The Spectacular Now, Captain Phillips, Blue Jasmine, Kill Your Darlings, In a World...) Raid 2 Gets Release Date By Borys Kit Sony Pictures Classics and Stage 6 Films have set a March 28 release date for The Raid 2, Gareth Evans highly-anticipated sequel to his cult Indonesian action pic The Raid: Redemption. The original was one of the breakout hits of the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival, with its bone-crunching action featuring Indonesian fighting style called pencak silat, and revolved around a police squad that had the misfortune of getting stuck in a tenement run by a ruthless warlord. Edwards, who wrote and helmed the original, jumped back in for the sequel, which will premiere in January at the Sundance Film Festival. Merantau Films Ario Sagantoro, as well as Aram Tertzakian and Nate Bolotin of XYZ Films, are Raid 2 s producers. The new film picks up right where the first film left off and follows Rama (Iko Uwais) as he goes undercover in order to protect his family and uncover the corruption in his own police force, according to the pic s producers. thr

3 Page 3 of 6 Nolte Joins Fox Event Series Gracepoint By Lacey Rose Nick Nolte is headed to the small screen. The Academy Award nominee joins fellow heavyweights David Tennant, Anna Gunn, Jacki Weaver and Michael Pena in Fox s Broadchurch adaptation, now titled Gracepoint. The 10-part series, which In Treatment s Dan Futterman and Anya Epstein have been tapped to run, follows Nolte the events and investigation that unfold in the sleepy seaside town of Gracepoint after the tragic and mysterious death of a young boy. Though the cause of his death remains unsolved the boy was found on an idyllic beach surrounded by rocks and a jutting cliff face the picturesque town where the tragedy occurred is at the heart of a major police investigation and a nationwide media frenzy. Nolte will play Jack Reinhold, a stubborn, unmarried, willful man who has lived in Gracepoint for 20 years. He runs the kayak rental shop on the beach as well as the local wildlife observation program, where the murdered boy was one of his volunteers. Gracepoint, billed as an event series, is scheduled to begin filming in January and will air during the season. It s being produced in partnership with Shine America in association with Kudos and Imaginary Friends. Shine International is distributing internationally. The original series creator, Chris Chibnall (Doctor Who), will executive produce and pen the premiere episode. Joining Chibnall, Futterman and Epstein as executive producers are Shine America s Carolyn Bernstein (The Bridge) and Kudos Jane Featherstone (The Hour). This event series is part of a larger effort at Fox to, among other things, lure top-shelf talent to the small screen, with truncated runs making that possible. A 24 follow-up and Wayward Pines, starring Matt Dillon, Melissa Leo and Terrence Howard, also are in the works at the network. Nolte, whose credits include The Prince of Tides, The Thin Red Line, Affliction and short-lived HBO effort Luck, is repped by CAA. His other upcoming projects include films Return to Sender, directed by Fouad Mikati, and an adaptation of A Walk in the Woods, in which he will star opposite Robert Redford. TNT snatches Smaug Rights By Kimberly Nordyke TNT said Monday that it has acquired TV rights to The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. Peter Jackson s second film in a trilogy based on J.R.R. Tolkien s The Hobbit has raked in $127.5 million domestically and $403.8 million worldwide since it was released Dec. 13. TNT will air the network TV premiere of the movie in The first pic in the trilogy, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, will make its debut on the network next year. TNT previously aired the network TV premiere of Jackson s The Lord of the Rings trilogy, starting with The Fellowship of the Ring in The Two Towers debuted in 2005, and The Return of the King made its network TV premiere on TNT in TNT has been the primary television home to Tolkien s Middle Earth for nearly a decade, beginning with our network television premieres of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, said Michael Wright, president, head of programming for TNT, TBS and Turner Classic Movies. We re proud to continue our association with these extraordinary and enormously popular epics with the acquisition of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. The Hobbit trilogy is being distributed domestically by TNT s corporate sibling Warner Bros. Pictures. tv news SNF Blowout Wins Sunday Ratings Race By Michael O Connell The latest installment of Sunday Night Football may have been a nonstarter for the Chicago Bears the Philadelphia Eagles toppled them but the most onesided victory in the NFL this season still topped Sunday primetime. NBC s airing of the game averaged a 5.5 rating among adults in Fast National returns, up 12 percent from last week. Ahead of time zone adjustments, the network averaged a 4.4 rating with adults and 13.1 million viewers for the night. A strong start from NFL overrun led into a new episode of 60 Minutes on CBS. Though final numbers are subject to change, early returns have the network averaging a 2.1 rating with adults and 10.3 million viewers. Also seeing some football overrun was Fox, which was otherwise in encores on Sunday night to the tune of a 1.6 rating with adults and 3.99 million viewers. ABC can probably thank NBC for the buoyed interest in this year s rebroadcast of The Sound of Music. The 1965 film, airing three weeks after the Peacock s live telecast of the stage musical, hit a sixyear high on the Alphabet net. Averaging 6.5 million viewers and a 1.3 rating among adults 18-49, between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m., the pic was up two-tenths of a point from last year. thr

4 Page 4 of 6 business news WME Hires Microsoft Alum Klein as CFO By Paul Bond and Rebecca Sun On the heels of its $2.4 billion acquisition of IMG, WME has named former Microsoft CFO Peter Klein as its new finance chief, the agency said Monday. The appointment is effective Klein immediately and when the WME merger with IMG is completed, Klein will be the CFO of the combined entity as well. Klein was with Microsoft for 11 years, becoming CFO in He announced in April that he was leaving the software giant. At that time, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer praised him for his ability to control costs and for his involvement in the acquisition of Skype, which Microsoft purchased from Silver Lake Partners, a WME stakeholder. The New York Times first reported Klein s appointment at WME. The newspaper said executives of Silver Lake, a Silicon Valley private equity firm with stakes in several companies, were the ones who first thought of bringing Klein to WME. Peter s impressive track record and international experience will be a tre- mendous asset as we begin a new and exciting chapter in our company s history, WME co-ceos Ari Emanuel and Patrick Whitesell said Monday in a joint statement. Peter s proven ability to structure and manage teams on a global scale, and bring rigor and organizational effectiveness to businesses large and small, will help to strengthen both WME and IMG. The New York Times report also stated that Silver Lake, which currently owns 31 percent of WME, will own an approximate 51 percent stake in the combined agency. WME declined to comment on the ownership breakdown, but if the 51 percent stake is true, it would raise the question of whether the relationship between WME and Silver Lake will change. Emanuel and Whitesell are said to have been given full management control of the combined company, but Silver Lake, as majority owner and primary financial backer, could choose to initiate small or wholesale changes at the combined WME/IMG. Still unresolved is who will be charged with running the IMG side of the business. U.S. Judge Rules Hulu Must Face Privacy Lawsuit By Eriq Gardner NEW YORK Before there was Netflix, there was Robert Bork. In 1987, a newspaper obtained a list of video tapes the Supreme Court thennominee rented from his local store. That was before the last Blockbuster closed. And it was before citizens began self-publishing their intimate behavior on social networking sites. At the time, some were aghast at the privacy intrusion. Thereafter, Congress passed the Video Privacy Protection Act, intended to penalize the wrongful disclosure of video tape rental or sales records. A lot has changed in the past 25 years, including the VPPA. Last year, after heavy tech industry lobbying, President Obama signed into law a VPPA amendment allowing companies to obtain consent for disclosure. Now, companies like Facebook or Netflix can avoid liability with a click of a user agreement. Still, some digital entertainment companies are contending with VPPA lawsuits submitted before the changes. One such company is Hulu, fighting a consumer class action launched in July 2011 that alleges the video site shared user s viewing history with third-party marketers. The company co-owned by Disney, Fox and NBCU argued in a summary judgment motion that plaintiffs needed to demonstrate their actual injuries resulting from a statutory violation of the VPPA. No, a magistrate judge responded. The wrongful disclosure is the injury. No more is needed as a prerequisite to collect damages. The lawsuit continues. Twitter Chair Dorsey Joins Disney Board By Paul Bond The Walt Disney Co. said Monday that Twitter chairman Jack Dorsey has joined the conglomerate s board of directors. Disney made the disclosure in a regulatory filing that also included CEO Bob Iger s fiscal 2013 compensation, which fell 14.7 percent to $34.32 million. The company stressed in its filing that Iger s compensation in recent years has been at or below the median of peers in the industry, the exception being in fiscal 2012 when he earned $40.23 million. As for Dorsey, more than seven years ago he cofounded Twitter, the socialmedia phenomenon that recently went public. On March 21, 2006, Dorsey, in fact, posted the world s first tweet, which read: Just setting up my twttr. The company now has 230 million active users who create 500 million tweets per day. Dorsey is also CEO of Square Inc., a commerce company he founded in thr

5 Page 5 of 6 movie review The Secret Life of Walter Mitty By David Rooney NEW YORK A lyrical comic fable about releasing the exceptional qualities trapped within ordinary people, Ben Stiller s The Secret Life of Walter Mitty expands upon the classic James Thurber short story, updating it to the age of corporate downsizing and dehumanizing job elimination. The film s pleasures may be too minor-key and its pace too meandering to conquer the mainstream, but audiences willing to tune in to its blend of surreal fantasy, droll comedy and poignancy will be rewarded. Originally published in The New Yorker in 1939, Thurber s 2½-page story entered the American lexicon; the title character s name became a byword for an ineffectual person who indulges in escapist heroic daydreaming. After contributing script notes that went unused, Thurber distanced himself from the 1947 film version, which became a sideshow for star Danny Kaye to exhibit his gifts in comedic or musical vignettes that more often than not brought the story to a halt. The remake project has kicked around for years, at times attracting interest from helmers including Steven Spielberg and Ron Howard. And while Stiller s version is too tonally diffuse to be fully satisfying, it s nonetheless a valid take on the material, using Thurber s story more as a jumping-off point than a solid foundation. DAYDREAM BELIEVER: Ben Stiller yearns for something different in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. Screenwriter Steven Conrad departs from both the prose source and the previous film in this new adaptation. He maintains the core theme of the liberating power of the imagination but tethers even Walter s most improbable fantasies to the real potential within him to fully engage with the world and be the type of man he always dreamed of being. Doubling as director and lead actor, Stiller imbues the character with the profound yearning and gnawing frustration of a man hijacked by melancholy circumstance from being a cool kid in his youth to a meek drone in adult life. His dazed confusion as to how that happened gives heart to the understated performance. Walter works at a contemporary incarnation of Life magazine, the office interiors of which are recreated with Mad Men-like retro detailing by production designer Jeff Mann. The building s sterile corridors contrast with the blown-up covers depicting great men and women and majestic images all of which feed Walter s active fantasy life. In reality, he lacks the nerve to speak to Cheryl (Kristen Wiig), a co-worker and recently separated mother who has caught his eye. But with new owners transitioning Life from print to digital and a supercilious incoming manager (Adam Scott) looking to cut jobs, Walter s window of opportunity to make a move is closing. When he inadvertently loses a negative from the magazine s enigmatic star photojournalist, Sean O Connell (an extended cameo by Sean Penn), that s been designated for the final issue s cover, Walter is forced to take action. Elevated by the spectacular location work of cinematographer Stuart Dryburgh, Walter s journey takes him first to Greenland and from there to volcanic Iceland. In a second trip, he travels to the Himalayas, where he finally tracks down O Connell, gleans a fresh perspective on living in the moment and gets to play soccer with Sherpas. Composer Theodore Shapiro s score is deftly augmented with symphonic indie alt-rock and beautiful vocal tracks by neo-folkie Jose Gonzalez, breathing epic scope into what s at heart a small New York fairy tale. While this duality is not entirely germane to the material, there s enough idiosyncratic charm in the treatment to ride over the languorous patches of a film that pushes close to two hours. A jokey reference to The Curious Case of Benjamin Button at one point underlines some similarities to that pic, which also mushroomed out of a work of short fiction by an iconic American writer working in a fabulist vein. Stiller s film is altogether less grandiose and less saccharine, its sweetness emerging without undue strain. The gradual shift by which lonely Walter s fantasies recede as his real life becomes more dynamic is modulated with disarming gentleness. More or less playing straight man, Wiig gives a quiet, appealing performance as a woman no less thwarted by the burdens of everyday existence than Walter; her ability to see past his awkwardness adds emotional warmth. Shirley MacLaine lends a welcome grounded presence to Walter s mother, and Patton Oswalt makes an amusing appearance as an eharmony technician obsessively following up on Walter s customerservice complaint. Opens: Wednesday (Fox). Production: Samuel Goldwyn Films, Red Hour Films, in association with New Line Cinema. Cast: Ben Stiller, Kristen Wiig, Shirley MacLaine, Adam Scott, Kathryn Hahn, Sean Penn, Patton Oswalt, Adrian Martinez, Olafur Darri Olafsson. Director: Ben Stiller. Rated PG, 114 minutes. thr
