5 synopsis krško, a small industrial town near the southern slovenian border with croatia. the only slovene nuclear power plant is based at the outskirts of the city. ludvik, a former national speedway champion, is a bitter widower, who transports illegal immigrants every night from the croatian to the italian border with his van. his boss sends to him the young and inexperienced rudi to serve as his assistant. on the first drive ludvik challenges rudi a few times; a beautiful macedonian girl is only one of their victims. rudi experiences a moral dilemma. after returning home to krško, they get drunk together and ludvik accepts rudi as one of his own. they go to races together and almost every night transport immigrants from all over the world past the nuclear plant. rudi quickly gets rid of his moral reservations; he becomes tough and relentless. the hope for better future, which europe represents to the refugees, often turns into serious human drama through the depiction of the miserable existence of their guides... statement of the director passports and visas are just formality for those who can get one. but the one who can t get it, is like the thing from outer space. in the year 2000, slovenian police caught around illegal refugees heading to italy, europe. and they were from africa, asian countries, from different former soviet union countries, pakistan, afghanistan and china; they were kurds, albanians, macedonians if only each fourth among them was caught, you could imagine the number of almost illegals in that year who tried or succeeded on their way through slovenia! which means, every day around 400 illegals tried their luck! a large number of people, a lot of money for the smugglers, and many human destinies. krško is my hometown, small city near the border with croatia, known by its nuclear power plant, paper mill and speedway races. and its great unemployment level. spare parts is a film about two insignificant smugglers from krško and about many illegal refugees. damjan kozole

6 damjan kozole, director and writer born in brežice in 1964, grew up in krško, living and working in ljubljana. made his first feature film at the age of 22, the low budget the fatal telephone, one of the first independent films made in former yugoslavia. his (mainly) low budget films participated at many international film festivals, and his previous feature film, porno film, was seen in slovenia by more than viewers. he also directed different documentary films, few among them are feature-length. he received numerous awards for his films. filmography (only feature films): the fatal telephone (1987, 68 minutes), remington (1988, 80 minutes), stereotype (1997, 90 minutes), porno film (2000, 80 minutes), spare parts (2003, 87 minutes).

8 danijel hočevar, producer emotionfilm, production company emotionfilm was established as a film production company in 1986, operating as part of the škuc film department (student cultural centre) till the year 1991, when it became an independent company. we were one of the first independent production companies to be established in former yugoslavia and slovenia. during this time we have: a. produced 13 full-length films, the best known of which are carmen (d. metod pevec, 1996), stereotype (d. damjan kozole, 1997), socialization of a bull? (d. čoh & erič, 1998), idle running (d. janez burger, 1999), porno film (d. d. kozole, 2000), ode to the poet (d. martin srebotnjak, 2001), bread and milk (d. jan cvitkovič, 2001) and spare parts, b. produced more than 20 short feature, documentary and animated films and c. co-produced 2 full-length films: the feature samotaři - the loners (d. david ondriček, 2000) and the documentary dear maestro (d. pavel koutecky, 1997). currently there are several independent and co-production (*) feature film projects at different stages of production: a. in post-production: the ruins (d. j. burger, 2003), unrest (d. a. žumbergar, 2003), marmelade (omnibus, d. b. petkovič, v. močnik, h.a.w. slak, z. živulovič, 2003), transnational (*, documentary, d. michael benson, 2003), tongs-man (*, d. matjaž latin, 2003) and how i killed a saint (*, d. teona strugar mitevska, 2003), b. in preparation or in production: under her window (d. m. pevec, 2003), red-coloured grey truck (*, d. srdjan koljević, 2003/4), from grave to grave (d. jan cvitkovič, 2003/4), exhibitionist (*, d. rajko grlić, 2004), 3d (*, omnibus, 2004) estrelita (d. m. pevec, 2004/5) and gravity (*, d. tomislav žaja, 2004/5). the films have participated at more than 100 film festivals all over the world, receiving numerous awards and acknowledgements (idle running, d. janez burger, 1999, won more than 20 awards and acknowledgements, while the most successful of the films, bread and milk, was awarded the lion of the future, the prestigious best first feature film award at the 58 th international film festival in venice in 2001). emotionfilm is the most successful slovene film production company. some of its films are produced under the vertigo production label. in the year 2001, danijel hočevar has been selected among the ten producers to watch by weekly variety.
