COURSES TAUGHT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MONTANA Stagecraft, Lighting and Sound This course is intended as an extension to the Introductory Technical Theatre class. The class is broken into sections for Scenery, Lighting/Sound, and Costume. The lighting section teaches students the basic principles of electricity, wiring, color theory, instrumentation, control equipment, paperwork, and electrical and theatre safety. The sound section encompasses basic information regarding playback and recording equipment, mixing consoles, amplification, loudspeakers, microphone types, magnetic tape formats. Laboratories are directly related to the lecture material and are conducted by the graduate teaching assistants. Theatre Lighting I This class serves as in intensive introduction to lighting design and centers around basic and modified McCandless design techniques. Also covered in depth are the controllable properties of light, color theory, instrumentation and photometrics, control equipment, drafting for lighting, paperwork, a designer's process, collaboration, considerations for differing spaces, and basic electricity. The history of stage lighting is touched upon, as well as other design styles. The course is project intensive. Theatre lighting II The class is the second half of the lighting sequence. It expands on the basic information given in Lighting I with more intensive projects addressing the student's design process, nuances of movement in light, the specifics of dance lighting, designing under time constraints, lighting drops, cycloramas and scrims, as well as exposure to other design methodologies, notably Jean Rosenthal's "Jewel" method. Lighting for Video This course exposes students to the mechanics and aesthetics of video lighting. It encompasses the physical and aesthetic characteristics of live and recorded video performances, studio and remote location lighting equipment, cameras, switchers, video tape editing, drafting and paperwork for video lighting design, a cinematographer's design process and collaboration technique. The course is project intensive. Master Electrician This class is intended for students who desire more advanced understanding of the mechanics used to implement a stage lighting design. It encompasses in-depth electrical concerns, power hookups, electrical load balancing, management of a plot, paperwork, in-depth maintenance and repair of instrumentation, and considerations for touring theatre. Students are expected to service departmental equipment, generate paperwork, serve as electricians on departmental shows, and execute various examples of power hookups. I serve as lecturer and safety monitor. CAD for the Theatre The purpose of this course is to give students the conceptual basis for understanding computer aided drafting. At the completion of this course, students have a good understanding of and are ready to use most CAD programs available on the market. This understanding quickly enables students to function as a designer/technician in an unfamiliar CAD environment. Through this process, the student gains a working knowledge of Vectorworks, Renderworks, and Spotlight for the Macintosh platform. Students complete projects related to their area of expertise within theatrical design. Theatre Sound I This course exposes novice students to the mechanics and aesthetics of sound. It encompasses the physical and aesthetic characteristics of sound, playback and recording equipment, mixing consoles, loudspeakers, microphones, magnetic tape formats and editing, multi-track recording, drafting and paperwork for sound, a sound designer's process and collaboration. The course is project intensive. Theatre Sound II This course is a continuation of Sound Design I and works as a practical exploration of using sound as a design medium. Students are expected to design productions as class exercises, generate paperwork and record audio for those productions, design and implement touring re-enforcement setups, and explore alternate techniques for generating sound such as live effects and electronic processing. Students are encouraged to develop their own design aesthetic and learn the workings of a production sound studio.
