1 Newsletter Eastern Illinois University Film Studies Minor February/March 2013 Film Conferences, Journals, and Screenings Central Illinois Feminist Film Festival Eastern Illinois University Call for Submissions Deadline: March 2, 2013 Festival: March 27, 2013 We are looking for films of high artistic quality that satisfy at least two of the following criteria: 1. Films created with an emphasis on gender and/or social justice issues 2. Films that link local and global issues 3. Films created by people underrepresented in the media field (women, people of color, queer /transgendered people, people with disabilities) 4. Films made by people from the Central Illinois area How to submit: Send a DVD or videotape of your film and a cover letter to: Open House February 11, 2013 from 9:30-11:30 The Film Studies Minor will be staffing a table at the EIU Open House in the University Ballroom on Monday, February 11 from 9:30-11:30. We will have a flyer with information about possible job opportunities with a film studies minor, a fact sheet, and an interactive film game available for prospective students and their friends to enjoy. Films should be short: under 60 minutes in length. Film DVD or videotape should be labeled with a) your name, address, and address and b) the title of your film. 2.You should us an acknowledgement at rlmurray@eiu.edu 3.In your cover letter, explain how you and your film fit our criteria and include a two-three sentence synopsis. Note: There is no submission fee for this film festival. This film festival promotes the mission of our Women s Studies Program: to promote an
2 understanding of how issues related to gender, age, race, economic status, sexual identity, and nationality affect women's lives and the communities in which they live. In order to promote an equitable and sensitive environment for all persons, Women s Studies also responds to issues affecting women on campus and in the community. February CIFFF Schedule 4:00: The Headless Woman (2008) Trailer: Written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, Miss Representation exposes how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America. The film challenges the media s limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel powerful herself. March 6 4:00 Pariah (2011) Trailer: Argentine politics from the 1970s and class differences of today play an important role in Lucrecia Martel's third film, The Headless Woman, the story of an upper-class middle-aged woman refusing to confront the truth about a hit and run accident. Like the pampered middle class of her country, she is deaf to the suffering around her, and her decision to forget may be a metaphor for the collective amnesia of her country of the torture and murder of thousands during the dictatorship of the seventies. 6:00 Miss Representation (2011) Trailer: In Dee Rees first feature film, Brooklyn teenager Alike ((pronounced ah-lee-kay) juggles conflicting identities and risks friendship, heartbreak, and family in a desperate search for sexual expression. With a flair for poetry and success in her classes, Alike is also quietly but firmly learning to embrace her identity as a lesbian. Despite resistance from her family, Alike strives to get through adolescence with grace, humor, and tenacity sometimes succeeding, sometimes not, but always moving forward.
3 6:00 Milk of Sorrow (2009) garnered so much media attention, who funded the effort and to what end. After seeing this film, you will decide who really profited from spilling hot coffee. 6:00 The House is Black (1963) Trailer: In Peruvian filmmaker Claudia Llosa s Milk of Sorrow, main character Fausta is suffering from an illness called the Milk of Sorrow, a disease transmitted through the breast milk of pregnant women who were abused or raped during or soon after pregnancy, as they were during Peru s brutal Civil War. While living in constant fear and confusion due to this disease, Fausta must face the sudden death of her mother and cope with the legacy of violence she has inherited. March 20 4:00 Hot Coffee (2011) Film: Set in a leper colony in the north of Iran, female poet and filmmaker Forugh Farrokhzad s The House is Black juxtaposes "ugliness," of which there is much in the world as stated in the opening scenes, with religion and gratitude. The film seamlessly adapts her techniques of poetry to its framing, editing, sound, and narration. At once lyrical and extremely matterof-fact, devoid of sentimentality or voyeurism yet profoundly humanist, the film offers a view of everyday life in the colony March 27 4:00-9:00: Film Festival Screenings: Submissions from Feminist Filmmakers America s Music: A Film History of Our Popular Music Trailer: Susan Saladoff s documentary Hot Coffee reveals what really happened to Stella Liebeck, the Albuquerque woman who spilled coffee on herself and sued McDonald s, while exploring how and why the case America s Music will begin with an opening concert and reception at 7 p.m. Jan. 11 in the Doudna Fine Arts Center Theatre. The evening will include short clips from the films in the series, as well as performances in the various musical genres. Scheduled to perform are the EIU Jazz Ensemble (jazz), Unity Gospel Choir (gospel), Scott Wattles and the Blue Suede Crew (rock n roll), Christine Robertson (Broadway), EIU Percussion Ensemble (Latino), Flat Mountain (bluegrass) and more. A variety of programs about America s Music will be held from January through April, including screenings and discussion of the following films: Broadway:

WILL Community Cinema Champaign, IL ct/cinema Wonder Women! The Untold Story of American Superheroines The New Art Film Festival The New Art Film Festival is an annual festival showcasing local filmmakers from Champaign- Urbana, IL, and other downstate Illinois cities. Event date is Friday, April 12, 2013, from approximately 5:00 p.m. to Midnight. Public admission is free. The New Art Film Festival will be promoted as part of the county-wide Boneyard Arts Festival of Champaign County. Spring 2013 Film Minor Courses CMN Field Production. Students learn theories and techniques of audio and video production, with an emphasis on field production, post-production, and broadcast news. Students will be required to complete laboratory hours at WEIU-TV and/or WEIU-FM. CMN Film Communication Wilson- Brown TR 12:30-1:45 and T 7-9:30 Film as the expression of the performers, producers, directors, writers, and technicians. Critical discussion of film theory, history, and criticism. 6 pm Tuesday, March 12 Champaign Public Library Come to our free screening and discussion of this film that traces the fascinating evolution and legacy of Wonder Woman. From the birth of the comic book superheroine in the 1940s to the blockbusters of today, Wonder Women! looks at how popular representations of powerful women often reflect society's anxietiesabout women's liberation. CMN Videography. TR 8:00-10:05 The study and practice of the production of video programs, with an emphasis on camera techniques. Practical experience in a wide variety of production exercises. CMN 3570 History of Documentary Gracon M/W 3-4:15. Coleman This course is a historical and critical survey of various documentary forms from the 1920s to the present. We will examine various documentary forms including cinema verite, direct cinema, reflexive filmmaking, diary and essay films, found footage, experimental ethnography, activist documentary, community filmmaking and participatory documentary.

MW 8:00-10:05 This course deals with the principles of preproduction planning, scripting, lighting, and audio and video mixing for studio and remote television productions ENG 2005 Creative Writing: Drama Knight TR 2:00-3:15 An introduction to the reading and writing of dramatic scenes for radio, theatre, TV, and film with class time devoted to various principles common to all dramatic writing through writing exercises and workshop discussion. (Group 5) EGL 923 WC Prerequisites & Notes: ENG 1002G. Credits: 3 ENG Senior Seminar Martinez MWF 9:00-9:50 In this course, we will explore a wide variety of literature and art and ultimately film from the early modern (Renaissance) period through the present day that attempts to decipher and address questions of how evil and madness affect human character and societal structure. Students will study these topics through an encounter with works as diverse as Shakespearean and Jacobean revenge drama; stories of the macabre by de Sade and Poe; the groundbreaking work of Confessional poets Robert Lowell, Sylvia Plath, and John Berryman; and modern stories of unreliable/evil narrators in the works of John Fowles, Martin Amis, J.G. Ballard, and Bret Easton Ellis. We will also consider cinematic portrayals of evil and madness such as Michael Powell s Peeping Tom, Martin Scorsese s Taxi Driver, and David Cronenberg s Videodrome. Lastly, students will study developments in how critical theory enables us to make sense of these social and psychological phenomena. ENG 4904, Studies in Film: Vision and Revision Boswell - T Fiction and film have always worked together in challenging ways, especially when filmmakers and writers reframe and revision earlier texts and films. We will consider several pairs of texts and films as we explore the fluid and ever-changing boundaries of the film/fiction collaborative process. Course requirements: some great reading; some great viewing; willingness to participate; two or three short papers; final research project. We will watch, study, and discuss a variety of movies throughout the semester as we explore the history, aesthetics, and critical theory which inform the movies. Prerequisites: Admission to the University Honors Program and permission of the Director of Honors Program. FILM 3759G. History of Cinema. Mitchell TR 2:00-3:15, W 2:00-3:59 The course offers a comprehensive yet selective overview of the history of cinema, integrating the basic tools for analyzing film as art. It will examine how the uses of camera, editing, lighting, sound, and acting contribute to the construction of meaning for audiences, as well as consider how meaning is filtered through various cultural contexts. Summer 2013 Courses EIU 4104G - World Film: Language and Culture in Film EIU 4104G - World Film: Language and Culture in Film. (3-0-3) This course will examine foreign film as a unique art form that strongly reflects the culture of its country of origin. Equal attention will be paid to film's cross-cultural and interdisciplinary nature. The influence of foreign film on and by Hollywood will be compared. Foreign Language majors are excluded. (3-0-3) A study of the ways in which the stories told in popular music, movies, and television programs demonstrate the important role that economics plays in individuals' lives. 6 governments, and society make decisions in attempts to achieve the greatest level of well-being possible in a world of limited resources. Economics majors are excluded. This course examines the relationship between politics and popular culture and focuses on how politics and culture interact. Students will examine how various media including music, television, film, and the Internet influence and reflect political behavior and institutions. Majors in Political Science are excluded.
