19 Silence speaks loudest 9 th May. 15 The European Union Film Festival, which started on 8 May, is celebrating its 20th year in India. Films from 21 member nations will be screened, ranging from recent releases to titles a few years old. The current edition s line-up is the strongest we ve seen in a long time. There s The Last Sentence (2012), about a Swedish newspaper editor who was a vocal critic of the Nazis, by veteran Swedish film-maker Jan Troell. There s the even better-known Czech director Jiří Menzel, whose comedy, the Don Juans (2013), revolves around a production of Mozart s Don Giovanni. There s a genuine crowd-puller in Paweł Pawlikowski s austereida (2013), winner of the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. But most interesting of all are two strikingly ambitious films one from Spain, the other from Estonia that hark back to the earliest years of film-making. Pablo Berger s Blancanieves (2012) sounds fascinating even in summary. It s the Snow White story (Los Hermanos Grimm, the opening credits declare), but done as a black and white, silent movie set in 1920s Andalusia, with bullfighting as a backdrop. It opens with Antonio Villalta, a famous matador, being gored badly in the bullring. As he fights for his life, his wife loses hers giving birth to a daughter. Villalta survives, but is paralysed from the neck down. His nurse, Encarna, played by the deliciously hatable Maribel Verdú, takes over his life, marrying him and keeping his daughter, Carmen, from meeting him. Carmen is eventually rechristened Blancanieves (Spanish for snow white ) and becomes that rare thing: a matadora, or female bullfighter. All the elements of the Snow White story are present evil stepmother, seven dwarfs (bullfighting dwarfs, no less), poisoned apple but Berger also gives his film the look and feel of a fairy tale. Blancanieves has that combination of horror, humour and beauty that was so integral to early Disney movies, and which informed the films of Berger s fellow Spaniard Luis Buñuel. When Encarna has Carmen s beloved pet rooster served for dinner and bites deliberately into a leg piece in front of the child, the point of the scene is that it s over-the-top and funny along

20 with being despicable. The atmosphere of unreality is further heightened by the fact that this is, quite literally, a fairy-tale world, one of blimps and toreadorsand magic lanterns. Unlike Michel Hazanavicius, whose highly successful silent film about old Hollywood, The Artist, released a year before Blancanieves and stole some of its thunder, Berger doesn t treat early cinema as pastiche. The actors do not behave as if they re in a silent movie (as they did in The Artist), and the film doesn t make too much of silent film tropes or mannerisms (not that it isn t playful: One of the intertitles preceding a shot of the rooster is a helpful Cock a doodle doo!!!.) This is in contrast to the other (partly) silent film in the line-up, Hardi Volmer s Living Images (2013). A deliberate pastiche of cinema down the ages, it tells the story of two Estonians, Helmi and Julius, and through them, a history of the country. Though the film involves a projectionist looking back at his life, don t go in expecting another Cinema Paradiso. For one thing, all the old movie clips have been painstakingly created by Volmer and his team in the cinematic style of the day. The story unfolds as sped-up silent film, as Technicolor musical, as 1960s-style communist cinema, and in half-a-dozen other cinematic styles. Some of the visual allusions might only make sense to those who can tell the difference between early and late silents, or between Soviet and German colour schemata, but there s no denying the extent of Volmer s ambition and the extent to which he realizes it. Living Images may not be the best film you ll see at the festival, but it s unlikely you ll see another quite like it anywhere. The 20th European Union Film Festival is on till 17 May, at Alliance Française and the National Centre for the Performing Arts, Mumbai. Clickhere for the schedule.

24 Mumbai Hosts Eu Film Festival For Next 10 Days 11 th May. 15 The rich cultural diversity of the European Union and its Member States will be on display in its myriad hues at the 20th European Union Film Festival (EUFF) that begins in Mumbai today, 8th May. The festival brings to India a repertoire of 21 latest and award winning European films from as many countries. Organized by the Delegation of the European Union and embassies of Member States, the festival is being held in Mumbai in partnership with Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan Mumbai & Alliance Francaise De Bombay from 8th May to 17th May The European Union Film Festival 2015 was inaugurated today by Mr. Chaitanya Tamhane, National Award Winning Filmmaker, in the presence of H. E. Dr João Cravinho, Ambassador of the European Union, Mr. Michael Siebert, Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Mumbai and Dr. Martin Wälde, Director, Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan Mumbai with the screening of the German film The Age of Cannibals at the Little Theatre, National Centre for the Performing Arts, Mumbai. Speaking about the EU Film Festival, Mr. Chaitanya Tamhane said, I feel honoured and privileged to be a part of the EU Film Festival in whatever little way that I can. I think it s an important cultural event which allows discerning viewers and cinephiles like me to engage with films from a distinct and fascinating part of the world. Having grown up watching world cinema facilitated through such initiatives in Mumbai, I have come to realise that these films are a way to travel without travelling, and a means to learn valuable insights about different societies and communities. As a viewer, I am really excited about this year s edition of the EU Film Festival, to see a whole bunch of evocative and exciting films that I otherwise would have never had a chance to see. Celebrating 20 years of bringing European cinema to India, the festival will screen movies from varied genres including comedy, drama, romance and action many charming and sometimes unsettling stories. The festival will tell the story of eleven year old Freddy, a cyclist who hopes to win a race and thereby meets one of his heroes; of two opera Directors whose common passion for music is matched by their thirst for love; of a man who runs away from his girlfriend but collides with a bride who has run away from her wedding; of a woman whose life in a mansion somehow mirrors the turbulent changes of an entire century; of a boy who makes unexpected friends while investigating the death of his parents in a car accident; and of the happy householder with the perfect marriage who finds love - or maybe something else with a choreographer who loves her cooking. Speaking about the success of the European Union Film festival in India, H. E. Dr João Cravinho, Ambassador of the European Union, said: Through films, sitting in a darkened hall in front of a screen, we can laugh together, relive history, explore the beauty of distant landscapes and celebrate what makes us human. Films give us glimpses into the life and times of people they portray and help break barriers of languages to bring people together across the world.

25 Thus, it is heartening to see that the European Union film festival through its 20 years of journey in India has provided an ideal bridge between two vibrant cultural scenes with rich film traditionsand has developed into a significant annual event in the calendar of film aficionados. This year we have decided to bring latest films from Europe to celebrate the 20th anniversary and we hope that the viewers will enjoy it as much as they have enjoyed our earlier editions. The Film Festival started from Chennai in March and has been successfully held in Delhi and Chandigarh so far. The festival will further traverse through Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Jodhpur and Coimbatore over the next three months.

43 Films from European Union on show on 8th May in Mumbai The rich cultural diversity of the European Union and its Member States will be on display in its myriad hues at the 20th European Union Film Festival that begins in Mumbai on 8th May. The festival brings to India a repertoire of 21 latest and award winning European films from as many countries. Organized by the Delegation of the European Union and embassies of Member States, the festival is being held in Mumbai in partnership with the German Consulate Mumbai, Goethe Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan Mumbai & Alliance Francaisede Bombay from 8th May to 17th May The festival will be inaugurated by National Award Winning Filmmaker, Mr. Chaitanya Tamhane at 5.00 pm on 8th May at the Little Theatre, National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) in the presence of H. E. Dr JoãoCravinho, Ambassador of the European Union to India, Mr. Michael Siebert, Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Mumbai and Dr. Martin Wälde,Director, Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan Mumbai. The Film Festival started from Chennai in March and has been successfully held in Delhi and Chandigarh. The festival will further traverse through Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Jodhpur and Coimbatore over the next three months. Celebrating 20 years of bringing European cinema to India, the festival will screen movies from varied genres including comedy, drama, romance and action - many charming and sometimes unsettling stories.

44 Speaking about the success of the European Union Film festival in India, H. E. Dr JoãoCravinho, Ambassador of the European Union and the Guest of Honour at the inauguration, said: Through films, sitting in a darkened hall in front of a screen, we can laugh together, relive history, explore the beauty of distant landscapes and celebrate what makes us human. Films give us glimpses into the life and times of people they portray and help break barriers of languages to bring people together across the world. Thus, it is heartening to see that the European Union film festival through its 20 years of journey in India has provided an ideal bridge between two vibrant cultural scenes with rich film traditionsand has developed into a significant annual event in the calendar of film aficionados. This year we have decided to bring latest films from Europe to celebrate the 20th anniversary and we hope that the viewers will enjoy it as much as they have enjoyed our earlier editions. The films to be screened at the EUFF will include -Go, Eddy! Allez Eddy (BELGIUM); The Foreigner (BULGARIA); Vis-À-Vis (CROATIA); Committed (CYPRUS); The Don Juans (CZECH REPUBLIC); The Keeper of Lost Causes (DENMARK); Living Images (ESTONIA); Boy Upside Down (FINLAND); JAPPELOUP (FRANCE); A Place Called Home (GREECE); The Ambassador to Bern (HUNGARY); Pizzas (LATVIA); The Symmetry of Butterfly (LUXEMBOURG); Soof (NETHERLANDS); Ida (POLAND); A Woman's Revenge (PORTUGAL); The Candidate (SLOVAK); Shanghai Gypsy (SLOVENIA); Blancanieves (Snowhite) (SPAIN); The Last Sentence (SWEDEN); The Age of Cannibals (Zeit der Kannibalen) (GERMANY). The Foreigner (BULGARIA, 2012, 94 min) is a romantic comedy about a Frenchman who falls in love with a hot tempered Bulgarian village girl. Following the call of his heart he starts looking for the village where she lives without knowing the character and the language of the people living there. Vis-À-Vis (CROATIA, 2013, 77 min) brings together the story of a film director on the island of Vis wanting to find out if he made a good choice in choosing his main cast. Due to the island s isolation during winter, the two of them are unexpectedly faced with their own frustrations, which intertwine with the film s plot in a strange way. Committed (CYPRUS, 2014, 85 min) is a romantic comedy about a man who takes to the road to escape the pressure of proposing to his girlfriend, only to come across a bride who has just run out on her wedding. The Don Juans (CZECH REPUBLIC, 2013, 102 min) is an affectionate satire filled with sensual imagery that tells the story about love and disillusion, music and passion; story about the world of opera unmasked and stripped of its glamour, and most of all, the story about the people caught in between. The Keeper of Lost Causes (DENMARK, 2013, 100 min) is the story

45 of 18-year-old Caspar who wants to reach the top, no matter what. He carries out small-time break-ins for Jamal, before moving on to work for big player Björn. Living Images (ESTONIA, 135 min) captures the life of Helmi, born into the house of Baron von Strandmann in Old-Town Tallinn, in The only thing that she knows for sure about her past is that her mother was an Estonian servant girl. Everything else is a discovery during a life that runs the course of a century a life that has quite a lot of surprises in store for Helmi. Boy Upside Down (FINLAND,2013, 130 min) narrates the tale of Oliver, 11, (EsaNikkilä) who loses his parents in a car accident. He refuses to mourn and instead, starts investigating the cause of the accident. Despite the film s gloomy starting point, Boy Upside Down is a warm and positive survival story full of quick twists and turns, and proof that life goes on, even though sometimes the going gets tough. JAPPELOUP (FRANCE, 2013, 130 min) is about a promising lawyer, Pierre Durand who devotes himself, body and soul, to his passion: show jumping. He invests everything in a young horse called Jappeloup. Pizzas (LATVIA 2012, 63 min) is the story of two pizza bakers, Oskars and Matīss. They have huge plans for the future studying at Oxford for instance. But one evening their lives are turned upside down. Most likely they ll be charged guilty with the kidnapping of a child. The Symmetry of Butterfly (LUXEMBOURG 2012, 100 min) is the tale of Roger, a Luxemburgish writer, who takes the people surrounding him on a journey into a fictional world. Playing with reality and fantasy, he transforms his novel The Symmetry of the Butterfly into a dream-like and poetical fantasy, where colourful butterflies alight on a rather monotonous everyday life. Soof (NETHERLANDS 2013, 96 min) is a universal romantic comedy, about expectations, disappointments, food processors, pasta vongole, wine, vodka, cheating and being perfectly happy together. Ida (POLAND, 82 min) recounts the life ofanna, a young novitiate nun in 1960s Poland, who is on the verge of taking her vows when she discovers a dark family secret dating back to the years of the Nazi occupation.
