1 Music Newsletter Summer 2018 ~ Mrs. Lacharite Indergarten Kindergarten Class Song: Don t Worry, Be Happy by Bobby McFerrin. Class began singing our prayer. Students worked on our class song while building the basic vocabulary of music (beat, rhythm, tempo, syncopation, pitch, melody, harmony, round, canon, lyrics, and dynamics). They incorporated physical movement to grasp these concepts. Students used their primary instrument, their voice, as they distinguished the difference between speaking and singing. They also used percussion instruments, learning the correct names and playing technique, as well as their own bodies (clapping hands, stomping feet) as they grew in their appreciation of music and built motor skills. The class used reading, pattern and memory skills to learn song lyrics (some in other languages) as they prepare new material, as well as recognizing traditional Americana music. Math skills were reinforced as we begin learning to count notes. The children are excited to show you all they have learned this year as they prepared very difficult material for our End of Year Performance. Along with their class songs, Kindergarten through Fourth Grade will be performing two large group pieces. Give a Little Love by Ziggy Marly, incorporates part singing, rhythm, syncopation and movement. Inchworm by Frank Loesser was originally sung by Danny Kaye in the film, Hans Christian Anderson from Kindergarten will be our opening solo group! I am so impressed with how well these little ones have grasped the difficult concepts of Counterpoint (new music term) and counting in 3/4 and 6/8 time. 2 irst Grade The Class Songs for Grade 1: The Garden Song by David Mallett and Here Comes the Sun by George Harrison. Each class began singing our prayer. Students built on their basic skills by singing songs with more complex rhythms and greater ranges. Their music vocabulary continued to grow as they learned new musical terms. We used terms introduced previously (beat, rhythm, tempo, syncopation, pitch, melody, harmony, round, lyrics, percussion) as we added to our vocabulary with notation, keeping time and musical instrument families. The children got hands on experience by using non-pitched percussion instruments in the classroom such as drums and tambourine, learning the correct names and playing techniques. Their own bodies were also used as instruments to create increasingly complex rhythms (clapping hands, stomping feet) as they grew in their appreciation of music and built motor skills. The class used reading, pattern and memory skills to learn song lyrics (some in other languages) as they prepared new material, as well as recognizing traditional Americana music. The students described ideas evoked by music. Math skills were vital as we continued learning to count notes. The students prepared for seasonal performances and learn proper practice habits. The students explored more complex music in structure, melody and harmony, and part singing was introduced. Their music vocabulary deepened, with words becoming more abstract (dynamics, expression, tone color). We continued to use musical terms introduced previously (beat, rhythm, tempo, syncopation, pitch, melody, harmony, round, lyrics, dynamics, percussion) as we added to our vocabulary with notation, keeping time and musical instrument families. The children got hands on experience by using non-pitched percussion instruments in the classroom such as triangles and maracas, learning the correct names and playing techniques. Their own bodies were also used as instruments to create increasingly complex rhythms (clapping hands, stomping feet and American Sign Language) while students prepare for performing music selections at seasonal concerts. Singing with proper tone, intonation and pronunciation was emphasized. The class used reading, pattern and memory skills to learn song lyrics (some in other languages) as they prepared new material, as well as recognizing traditional Americana music. The students described ideas evoked by music. Math skills were vital as we continue learning to count notes. The students prepared for seasonal performances and learned proper practice habits. The children are excited to show you all they have learned this year as they prepared very difficult material for our End of Year Performance. We continued to use musical terms introduced previously (beat, rhythm, tempo, syncopation, pitch, melody, harmony, round, lyrics, percussion) as we added to our vocabulary with notation, keeping time and musical instrument families. The children got hands on experience by using non pitched percussion instruments in the classroom such as drums and tambourine, learning the correct names and playing techniques. Their own bodies were also used as instruments to create increasingly complex rhythms (clapping hands, stomping feet) and students learned the difference between liturgical and a wide variety of secular music genres. The class is using reading, pattern and memory skills to learn song lyrics (some in other languages) as they prepared new material, and recognized traditional Americana music. The students described ideas evoked by music. Math skills were vital as we continued learning to count notes. The students prepared for seasonal performances and learned proper practice habits. They loved learning to sing harmony and complex parts. Students were introduced to making instrumental music by studying the Recorder. They learned to read fingering charts along with basic music notation, staff reading, counting, dynamics and breath control. Instruction was differentiated by providing the students playing opportunities with ranges of difficulty. Song structure and other compositional techniques were explored. Students were encouraged to play and sing for family and classmates in a comfortable and supportive environment. Homework was required in the form of Weekly Practice Logs. Music ensembles were offered for students wishing to augment their classroom experience. The children are excited to show you all they have learned this year as they prepared very difficult material for our End of Year Performance. Along with their class songs, Kindergarten through Fourth Grade will be performing two large group pieces. 5 ourth Grade Fourth Grade loves so many songs, we kept adding to our song list. Some previous material had been put on hold while we concentrated on new songs. We have been working hard on the vocals and flute solo (performed on Recorder) for Colour My World by Chicago. Each class began singing our prayer. Music vocabulary became richer (orchestration, intonation, time signatures, rests, instrument recognition, composition, music history and genres). We continued to use musical terms introduced previously (beat, rhythm, tempo, syncopation, pitch, melody, harmony, round, lyrics, percussion, dynamics, octaves) as we added to our vocabulary with notation, keeping time and musical instrument families. Melodies became more difficult and playing and singing with expression was stressed. The children got hands on experience by using pitched and non-pitched percussion instruments in the classroom such as xylophones and conga drums, learning the correct names and playing techniques. Their own bodies were also used as instruments to create increasingly complex rhythms (clapping hands, taping, stomping feet) and students learned the difference between liturgical and a wide variety of secular music genres. The class used reading, pattern and memory skills to learn song lyrics (some in other languages) as they prepared new material, and recognized traditional Americana music. The students described ideas evoked by music. Math skills were vital as we continued learning to count notes. The students prepared for seasonal performances and learned proper practice habits. They loved learning to sing harmony and complex parts. By continuing their study of the recorder to make music, students read more advanced notation and played in two and three parts. They continued to read fingering charts along with more advanced music notation, staff reading, counting, rests, dynamics, octaves, intonation and breath control. Instruction was differentiated by providing the students playing opportunities with ranges of difficulty. Song structure and other compositional techniques were explored. Students were encouraged to play and sing for family and classmates in a comfortable and supportive environment. Homework was required in the form of Weekly Practice Logs.
