1 The Sacramento Recorder Society A place for early music of all kinds in Sacramento A chapter of the American Recorder Society An affiliate of the San Francisco Early Music Society June 2014 For more information about the Sacramento Recorder Society, visit our website at June Meeting 6:30pm Tuesday, June 3, 2014 at the Friends Meeting House th Street between J St. and H St. Note early start time to accommodate setting up potluck table and sale items. Letter From The President Dear Recorder Society Members, One benefit of the monthly SRS Chapter Meetings is some interesting music to take away and play again. But, what to do during the long, hot summer months when we have no visiting conductors to bring new music? How about a visit to public domain sources on the Internet? These are works whose intellectual property rights have expired, have been forfeited, or are inapplicable. They are not covered by copyright and can be reproduced. In fact, some of our SRS conductors have brought music they found on public domain sites! There are several sources on the Web for music in the public domain: Choral Public Domain Library or CPDL, and the International Music Score Library Project (IMSLP), which now contains the Werner Icking Music Archive, are two large ones. Also smaller, but growing are: The Mutopia Project and the Sheet Music Project, which is an adjunct of Project Gutenberg. Sometimes the site will supply a MIDI or a sound file, so you can hear the piece being played. So, summer doldrums give way to musical mania as thousands of works are discovered to be available and for free! See you on Tuesday, June 3 rd, Robert Foster, SRS President The June Meeting Please arrive by 6:30 to set out your food and sale items. SRS will be providing dessert (it s our thirtieth year!), so please bring savory finger food, fruit, or vegetables to the potluck. Annual elections for the SRS leadership will be held. Sale items should be music-related and tagged with a price. We will again have Open Mic. Let Robert know if you plan to play. Please keep performances to five minutes. We will also hear from our treasurer, Doris Loughner.

4 Check the websites listed below: San Francisco Early Music Society: UC Berkeley s CalPerformances: UC Davis: Voices of Music: Listening to Early Music Here are some possibilities: Sunday Baroque, which airs from 8am to 10am on 88.9 FM, KXPR. Harmonia provides podcasts at its website: indianapublicmedia.org/harmonia plays a variety of musical styles, all including recorders. You can access it via the Flashplayer on their website or itunes. The Chicago Early Music website provides access to many early music resources. Go to earlymusicchicago.org, then click on ensembles, then click on beyond Magnatune.com allows you to listen to music free and pay when you choose to download, or you can subscribe for $15/ month for unlimited downloads. Millennium of Music: "The sources and mainstreams of European music from the thousand years before the birth of Bach." aboutrad.php Refreshments at Monthly Meetings Feeling thirsty? Peckish? It must be time for the mid-meeting break! Refreshments for May s nutrition and conversation break were provided by Susan Titus and Atsuko Wylie. Many thanks to both of you! The Recorder Community at its Best! From our new member, Camilla Barry: The Black Hat Recorder group has been playing together in Tiburon for the past 20 years or so. Between 5-8 recorderists meet most Tuesdays. We are the remnants of the earlier Marin Recorder Society, but we renamed ourselves after one of our group had cancer and wore a hat to cover her head during performances at churches and other venues. It seemed appropriate for all of us to sport hats. (She recovered and is doing nicely). We are a closeknit group, having been together through deaths, illnesses, book authorships, travel by one of us to Afghanistan (during which the others prayed for her safety) and other life changes. Check Out the Blog! still works, but Kathy Canan has reduced it to a single page with basic introduction and a link to the blog. The new blog at sacrecorders.wordpress.com/ has all the information that Kathy kept on the website, but now she can post by from her smart phone if she needs to. She can easily authorize others to post as well, and anyone can add more information by commenting on the posts. You can check the blog for new information any time, or you can subscribe to it by entering your in the Follow field. Information that rarely changes is also on the blog. Click on the tabs at the top: About SRS, Calendar, Contact, and Lessons. If you want to see information about only one category, such as Workshops, you can use that menu.

5 About the Sacramento Recorder Society The Sacramento Recorder Society, founded in 1982, is a non-profit, taxexempt organization. It is a chapter of the American Recorder Society and an affiliate of the San Francisco Early Music Society. We welcome recorder players of all ages and abilities as well as players of other early music instruments such as lutes, viols, sackbuts, shawms, curtals, krummhorns, and percussion. Beginners are urged to study privately and learn fingerings and become comfortable reading music before joining the recorder orchestra. We meet monthly from September through June, from 6:45pm to 9:30pm on the first Tuesday of each month, at the Friends Meeting House, th Street, between J St. and H St. Most of our meetings are conducted by a professional early music specialist who teaches recorder technique and relevant music history and theory while exploring music of many eras. Many of our members also play in smaller groups in members homes during the rest of the month. Sacramento Recorder Society Board President: Robert Foster Vice President: Mark Schiffer Secretary: Patricia Johnson Treasurer: Doris Loughner Members-at-Large: Steve Sherman, Gail Crawford Education Chairperson: Crystal Olson For information on SRS, please contact the following board members by rfoster@london.com or marschif@gmail.com Consider joining one of the larger organizations which make our own SRS possible: The San Francisco Early Music Society, with whom we are affiliated, offers excellent workshops and concerts in the Bay Area.
