4 ADJUDICATOR PROFILES: BALLET & MODERN DANCE: Rose McRae, Auckland Dip. R.B.S. (T.T.C.) A.R.A.D R.A.D.R.T.S. Rose started dancing at 6 years old with Jill Williams. At age 11 Rose started dancing at the Auckland Ballet Academy under the directorship of Julia Barry. Throughout the next 4 or so years she took every class she could developing her passion for dance. Rose became a member of the Auckland Youth Ballet, a group of young students who performed regularly on stage and attended various performances at Rest Homes and other events, thus developing stage awareness and adapting to different stage sizing. From the age of about 10, Rose had the passion to become a Ballet teacher. At 16 Rose was accepted into the Royal Ballet School, London, 3 years Teachers Training Course under the directorship of Miss Valerie Adams. The training was intense, and covered a wide variety of subjects including R.A.D. training and theory Pre Primary to Advanced, Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing Cecchetti & National Advanced and Associate. The course also included the opportunity to study, learn and teach many different dance styles such as Spanish, Contemporary, Character styles from the Various Countries, Classical Solo Variations, Repertoire, Music Training, Child Development, A level Dance Studies, General Studies also Benish Notation and many other associated skills. After graduating in 1995 Rose returned to New Zealand after a trip around Europe. On her return home Rose completed the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing Modern Examinations to Advanced level. Upon her return Rose took on a teaching job at the Auckland Ballet Academy. After a few years Rose decided to freelance teach and was fortunate to get work with Jill Williams, Stewart Dance Studios Takinini, Mount Eden Ballet Academy & Auckland Academy of Dance New Lynn. Rose s experience has taken her all over the country teaching at various Holiday Seminars including Invercargill, Tauranga, Rotorua, Hamilton, Thames, Ngatea & Whangarei. Rose has also adjudicated at various competitions in the North Island; Auckland, Tauranga, New Plymouth & Kapiti Coast and has enjoyed every moment of it. In 1999 Rose started her own dance school in Clevedon from there she branched out and had locations at Ellerslie, Pakuranga, St Heliers and Waiheke Island thus creating Rose McRae Dance Academy which was run at a highly professional standard. In 2010 Rose had a beautiful baby boy which started to consume her time and therefore she made the decision to step back from the director roll, initially by letting go of a few branches before eventually selling the school. Rose is now enjoying her time being a mum, working part time freelance teaching and having the flexibility again to accept adjudicating and seminar opportunities. Dance teaching, is one of the fortunate career choices, where you can enjoy your passion for dance; share it with others all in a day s work. 4
