2 RMIT University offers a series of short courses for people interested in gaining skills and knowledge in sound, music, lighting and live production to support their careers, interests and hobbies. These short courses are taught by people with extensive industry experience. They are open to students age 15+ and are usually scheduled during school holiday periods. Production Lighting for Live Events Course code: S Want to learn how to design, install and operate a light show for live events? Over three full days you will learn how to set up, record and operate lighting cues and effects. You will explore how to mix colour and utilise different types of lighting in order to design and achieve creative lighting effects. You will also cover how to safely prepare, install and test lighting equipment. RMIT has a range of industry-standard lighting equipment that you can access and become familiar with during the course including intelligent and generic lighting control and fixtures. Basic physics of light Typical organisational structures for live events Industry terminology Families of light fixtures and when and how to use them including Martin fixtures and generic lanterns Introduction to lighting control systems including Ma on PC and generic consoles such as LSC Maxim Set up and pack down of lighting systems including DMX, addressing and patching Colour theory and practice Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) practices General applications and communications for lighting design and operation in live events Equipment, specific to your workplace or project. This course is ideal for technicians early in their career or those wanting a refresher course in lighting. It is also suitable for production/tour managers, producers, educators, performers and others who want to develop a better understanding of lighting for live performances. Music Production Creating Your Own Tracks Course code: S Would you like to record, arrange, edit and mix your own music tracks using the latest music production software? This short course will enable you to create music with synthesisers, samplers, looping and recording using Pro Tools, while also exploring the world of digital audio editing and instrument and audio processing plug-ins. You will learn sound modification techniques and combine composing, recording, mixing and remixing techniques to take your music to the next level. You will create your own music, then mix and master tracks to a CD or digital file format of your choice. Deborah Hatton Production Lighting for Live Events Deborah has over 25 years of experience in lighting and has been teaching since She is best known for her lighting for live performance and she tours nationally with Debra Byrne and Vika Bull for Tapestry The Songs of Carole King. Deborah is tertiary-qualified in lighting and has worked across most lighting applications. In 2015 she designed, specified and installed the stage lighting system for MEMO Music Hall and is a current TechIES member of the IES of Australia and New Zealand.

3 Studio Recording Capturing a Professional Sound Course code: S Want to learn to capture the best possible sound using the latest in recording technology and get practice recording a live band? In this practical course you will learn sound basics and acoustics, get hands-on training in setting up a recording session, signal flow, microphones and headphone mix. Through this two-day course, you ll get involved in a multi-track studio recording session with a live band and learn about: tweaking faders, setting EQs and operating the industry standard, high resolution, hard disk recording software, and Avid Pro Tools. 4 ToK Norris Course code: S Keen to get started in sound production? is a 12-week course that will introduce you to the fundamentals of the Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) environment. Focusing on the basics of managing sound, you will gain an understanding of ProTools functions and basic sound capture with a microphone. You will learn signal flow theory and its importance with both digital and analogue audio systems. Introduction to Mac software functions and data management Introduction to pro tools virtual mixer environment Fundamentals of the EDIT window Routing of signal from audio track to busses and sends Basic effects: spatial (reverb) and time-based (delay, chorus etc.) Fundamentals of equalisation (EQ) and dynamics (compression and limiting) Recognition of time, meter and tempo Introduction to Logic X create a simple MIDI piece of music using Logic X instruments Capturing a single channel microphone signal Basic editing using fundamental EDIT and MIXER functions.
