'6' WELCOME to Ninety-one-derful San Francisco. It is indeed a pleasure to welcome you on behalf of the officers and directors of the American Theatre Organ Society. The folks of NorCal Chapter have done their utmost to make this convention a memorable one for you. Enjoy the venues, the organs, the artists and their music, and the city, but most of all, enjoy the camaraderie of new and old friends. Please introduce yourself to the ATOS Board of Directors and the new officers. This year you will have an entirely new set of officers; speak to them and let be known your desires and concerns. So, sit back, enjoy, and on with the show! As host to the 1991 ATOS Convention, NorCal Theatre Organ Society welcomes you and invites you to share in the celebration and premiere of our chapterowned Wurlitzer organ. NorCal now joins the many other chapters which own their own instruments. Ours is the culmination of chapter effort beginning in Since then, dozens of people have contributed time and material to the project. This convention is being held to celebrate their contributions. I would particularly like to acknowledge these individuals and groups: Judson Owens, manager, Berkeley Community Theatre, for his desire to have an organ in the theatre and his coming to NorCal and encouraging us to dream - BIG; 1983 NorCal Convention Committee and those who attended the convention, for making it a success and providing the nucleus of money to begin the project; Rudy Frey, for his inspiration and unceasing efforts in attacking and overcoming all obstacles to the acquisition of the necessary components; Gary Brookins, who donated the beautiful Toledo Paramount Wurlitzer Publix 1 organ that forms the core of our organ; Lowell Wendell, who provided technical guidance and leadership while we were developing our talents; The Organ Technical Committee (Lowell Wendell, William Schlotter, Rudy Frey, Carl Piimow and Edward Stout), for six years of problem-solving and work, and yet we are still friends; The organ crew, for six years of work - about 55,000 manhours of it; Ken Crome, for the loving restoration of a most beautiful console; Quality Pipe Organ Service (Ed Stout and Dick Taylor, with Clark Wilson), for the talented artistry of their profession, their guidance and labor in producing not just a big organ, but a great organ; The many organ technicians and organists who gave guidance and direction to the project, and whose many visits have inspired us and given us a great enthusiasm; The 1991 NorCal Convention Committee, for setting a deadline for the organ's completion; and The 1991 ATOS Convention attendees, for providing the incentive to meet the deadline. : Bill Schlotter, Chairman NorCal Chapter, ATOS John B. Ledwon, President American Theatre Organ Society

On behalf of the Convention Committee, welcome to the Bay Area and the Ninety-one-derful Convention! We are grateful for the talents of the outstanding organists who will be playing for us. We are confident that you will be hearing memorable concerts. Two organs are being presented to you this year for the first time: The Stanford Theatre Wurlitzer in its beautifully restored auditorium in Palo Alto, and NorCaTs own instrument, the Berkeley Community Theatre Wurlitzer. The now-familiar ATOS dedication has been demonstrated by the hardworking crews who have installed the new instruments, as well as by those who have continued to maintain the instruments which premiered at our 1983 convention, in San Francisco's Castro Theatre and in the Oakland Paramount Theatre. I would like to add that Bill Schlotter has worked as hard as the rest of the crew on the Berkeley installation. Your convention committee has also worked dili gently to prepare a convention which we sincerely hope you will enjoy. We have tried to provide a musically stimulating program, but one which will not be physically taxing. You have come from other countries and from many of the United States. Your presence here is exhil arating to us, and we look forward to enjoying the time together. If you need assistance, please come to our Hospitality Desk, ask any of our Convention Committee members (identified by their badges) or any of our Bus Captains for help. Whether this is your first or twenty-first visit to San Francisco, we think you'll find our "City by the Bay," with its many restaurants and scenic views, an exciting place to visit. Thanks for coming! Rudolph O. Frey Convention Chairman U i Lowell and JANICE WENDELL were named Co- Chairmen of the 1991 Convention at the start of planning. They organized the convention committee and set the course before his illness from cancer forced their resignations in January Lowell was responsible for the successful effort to obtain the donation of the Toledo Paramount organ to NorCal. He led the crew in packing and shipping the instrument from Ohio to Berkeley, and provided the guidance and training of the crew necessary to assure the success of the organ restoration and installa tion. All the members of NorCal deeply regret that he did not live to see and hear the realization of his dream, but we are grateful for what his efforts have brought us. Janice had an active part in the convention planning, particularly in helping Lowell to continue participating as he became more and more weakened by his illness. She rejoined the committee in April and has played an impor tant role since then.

JACK BETHARDS is a San Francisco Bay Area native who has long been active in the musical world. He is President and Tonal Director of Schoenstein & Co. Organ Builders, the oldest and largest organ factory in the western states (established 1877). Jack is active in the American Guild of Organists, president of the American Institute of Organbuilders, and a member of several other organ-related societies. One of Jack's great interests is American popular and light classical music of the period from the 1890s to the 1940s. He has built up a library of orchestrations which is one of the largest in the nation. Among theatre organ enthusiasts, he is probably best known as the director of The Lyn Larsen Show, featuring Jack's orchestra with Larsen at the organ. The BERKELEY COMMUNITY THEATRE is part of a complex designed to serve not only the needs of the Berkeley High School, but also as a major performing arts center for the city and surrounding communities. The building contains a 600-seat Little Theatre and facilities for the school music department, in addition to the 3500-seat theatre where the NorCal Wurlitzer is installed. Construction was begun in 1941, only to be interrupted by World War II. Work was resumed in 1948 and completed in 1950.

"S. - L V. m^jurnc Thomas HAZLETON is well-known and admired in both the classical and theatre organ fields, and has made many recordings on both types of instruments. He received his formal education in music at San Francisco State University and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. He also studied under Richard Purvis, and was his assistant at Grace Cathedral. Tom was the last staff organist at the San Francisco Paramount Theatre, and was organist for 14 years at the Menlo Park, California, Presbyterian Church. He now holds the position of Tonal Director for the Rodgers Instrument Corporation. Kevin king grew up just a few minutes drive from Ye Olde Pizza Joynt, where the Wurlitzer first met the pizza almost 30 years ago. It was there he decided that someday he would have to play this unique instrument. Under the guidance of Pizza Joynt organist Bill Langford, he was on his way. During his late teens, he played his first concert for a Bay Area organ club. Kevin continued his musical education both privately and at California State University, Hayward. At the university, he was active in the musical theatre department, both onstage and in the orchestra pit. He has played at several pizza restaurants and given concerts for four ATOS Chapters. Kevin is staff organist at the Bella Roma pizza restaurant in Martinez, where he has been for eight years. In addition to playing, Kevin is also involved in maintenance and restoration work on organs. He maintains the Bella Roma organ, and has had a vital role in both the Berkeley Community Theatre and the Stanford Theatre organ projects as sheet metal wind line fabrication and installation expert. WALTER STRONY was born in 1955 in Chicago and began music lessons at the age of seven. His theatre organ teacher was the famous Chicago organist A1 Melgard, who played the huge Barton organ in the Chicago Stadium for many years. His classical organ studies were with Herbert L. White and Karel Paukert. Walt made his public debut at the age of 18, and has since played throughout the United States, as well as in Japan, Australia, England and Canada. He consults on pipe and electronic organ installations, is organist and choirmaster in a Phoenix church, and composes choral and organ music. Walt has made eleven recordings to date, and the first live theatre organ video recording.

CLARK WILSON,a native of Ohio, began his musical training at the age of nine. In -C*' high school, he accompanied stage musicals and was organist at three churches. He joined the Schantz Organ Company in 1976 as a reed voicer and tonal finisher, after having been involved in the reconstruction of several pipe organs. He traveled extensively for Schantz, and while on assignment in Milwaukee began a five-and-a-half year association with Pipe Organ Pizza as featured organist. Subsequently, Clark has been a staff organist at four other pizza restaurants. He has played several church organ dedications. In addition to his playing abilities, Clark is emerging as a respected tonal finisher of both theatre and classical organs, and is pleased to have been associated with Edward M. Stout Quality Pipe Organ Service on the Berkeley Community Theatre and the Newton Organ Company on the Oakland Paramount Theatre projects. He has made four theatre organ recordings. SIMON GLEDHILL was bom in Halifax, West Yorkshire, in He showed a keen interest in music very early, taking up the accordion when he was six and winning several competitions playing the instrument. When he was ten, his parents bought him a small electronic organ. He taught himself to play for two years before beginning lessons with Michael Woodhead, who also gave him training in classical organ and piano. Hearing Ernest Broadbent play the Wurlitzer in the Tower Ballroom, Blackpool, inspired Simon's interest in the theatre organ, and he was soon practicing regularly on a local privatelyowned instrument. He became the Northern Young Organist of the Year when he was 16, and was invited to make some recordings on the B.B.C. theatre organ for broadcast. He has since performed on nearly every major theatre organ in Britain. He has made five recordings, the latest being the first commercial recording of the Castro Theatre organ, and has appeared twice in the Oakland Paramount Organ Pops Series. This is his third appearance before an ATOS National Convention. He has also performed at the 1991 T.O.S.A. National Convention in Sydney, Australia. Simon was the first recipient of the Cinema Organ Society's Ian Sutherland Award, now given annually to a young organist of outstanding talent and potential. He has also been chosen as the 1991 Patron of the British Theatre Organ Club. -t ii t I k

The CASTRO THEATRE is the most elaborate K"V I '' i Hl i;! \ neighborhood theatre in San Francisco. It was the first one designed by the noted architect Timothy Pflueger. When it opened in June of 1922, it contained a 2/11 Robert-Morton organ. That instrument was removed in The present organ is a 4/21 Wurlitzer composed of parts from 15 Wurlitzers. 13 JIM RIGGS began learning music at the age of seven, when he put rolls of '20s and '30s music on the family's player piano. He started then to play by ear, and continued to do so until he entered junior high school. There he joined the chorus and began to learn to read music. His introduction to theatre organ came one day when his class made a field trip to the home of Aura Edwards. She demonstrated her 18-rank Wurlitzer, and Jim was hooked. He was allowed to come to her home after school and practice for a couple of hours, which he continued to do until he left to enter Chapman College. There, he played on a three-manual Schantz, and first tried silent movie scoring. After college, Jim moved to Santa Rosa, where he played a 2/7 Wurlitzer in the California Theatre. Then, back to the Bay Area and engagements at the Pizza Junction in Rheem and the Bella Roma in Martinez. Next came a stint at the Organ Stop Pizza in Tucson. In 1985, Jim again returned to the Bay Area, where he has played at the Grand Lake and Castro Theatres. He was honored by ATOS as Organist of the Year for 1990, and in August was named Staff Organist for the Oakland Paramount Theatre. Jim is also a staff organist at Palo Alto's Stanford Theatre. He has given concerts throughout the United States, and in Great Britain and Canada, and has played at five ATOS National Conventions. He has released three recordings, the latest made on the Oakland Paramount Wurlitzer., - The paramount theatre opened November 7, Designed by Timothy Pflueger, who had done the Castro Theatre nine years earlier, the Paramount was one of the last of the great movie palaces and is considered a masterpiece of Art Deco design. The theatre was completely restored in Its original organ was a 4/20 Publix 1 Wurlitzer, Opus 2164, the last Publix 1 built; it was removed in the late 1950s. The console and many ranks of pipes and windchests from the first Publix 1, as well as pipes and other components from two other Publix Is and a 260SP, make up the present 4/27 Wurlitzer.

Lew WILLIAMS,a native of Lafayette, Louisiana, began playing the organ at the age of ten, and started piano instruction five years later. Grace cathedral is located where the palatial homes of the Crocker family stood before the earthquake and fire of The Crockers donated the land to the church, and construction began in 1928, but the cathedral was not completed and consecrated until late The structure is built of reinforced concrete, and this together with the location in an earthquake-prone area, dictated the rather plain design. The organ was installed in the unqnished cathedral in 1934 by Aeolian-Skinner as their Opus 910. Minor tonal revisions throughout the instrument were made in 1951 by Aeolian-Skinner. In 1968, the Italian firm of Fratelli Ruffatti replaced the fourmanual electropneumatic console action with an all-electric five-manual action, retaining the original console shell. Casavant Freres, a Canadian company, installed the Bombarde and Gallery Divisions in 1974.
