Stevens ( ) was born in Ogden, Utah to Stanley and Adeline Smith Stevens. He went on a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) from to Belgium and Switzerland. He attended the University of Utah, but transferred to Stanford University where in 1931 he received his A. B. degree. Originally pursuing medicine as a career, Stevens was admitted to Harvard Medical School, but he later changed to Psychology. Stevens received a Ph.D. in 1933 from Harvard University.
