1 Princeton Middle School Band Syllabus Expectations -Be on time -Be prepared for class - Practice your instrument outside of class -Work hard -Do your best -Have Fun Grading Students will never receive below a 50 as a final 9 Weeks grade. Pass -Offs (Playing Assignments) 30% -Students receive list of Pass-Off materials for the grading period -Students play material individually for a grade (1-6. See Rubric Below) -Students may replay for a higher grade (Teaching to Mastery) -Original score can never go down Performance Assessment (Playing Quizzes) 50% -Work on Pass-off material in and outside of class -Do your best -Students may replay for a higher grade (Teaching to Mastery) -Original score can never go down -Quiz grade is 3 highest Pass-Off grades Class Participation (Classwork) 20% Students must have with them each day; -instrument in playing condition -music and/or method book in a 3-ring binder -a pencil *Skill Building There is not a grade associated with this, but time spent here will benefit the student greatly. Rule of Thumb: Practice 4 or 5 times a week, 20 to 30 minutes each night. The goal is 100 minutes of practice each week.practicing can take place at home as well as RTI/MTSS time.

2 Performance Assessment Rubric Level Percent Grade Letter Grade Description A+ Perfection! There are no errors in pitch, rhythm, dynamics, or articulation. Intonation and tone quality are of a superior quality A There may be an error in pitch, rhythm, dynamics, or articulation, but not so as to affect the overall performance. Intonation and tone quality are excellent A- There are one or two errors in pitch, rhythm, dynamics, and/or articulation which affect the overall performance. Intonation and tone quality are good B There are some errors in pitch, rhythm, dynamics, and/or articulation which affect the overall performance. Intonation and tone quality are mediocre C There are many errors in pitch, rhythm, dynamics, and articulation which affect the overall performance. Intonation and tone quality are below standard D Performance was not prepared. There are numerous errors in pitch, rhythm, dynamics, and articulation which greatly affect the overall performance. Intonation and tone quality are poor. Performance may be incomplete. 0 0 F No attempt was made.

3 Concert Attendance and Dress There will be a Christmas and a Spring concert for all middle school band students. Attendance at these concerts is mandatory. Each concert will be worth 2 quiz grades. Dates and times for the concerts are still at this time TBA. Also, it is required that band students stay to watch the entirety of the concert. (Performances are never longer than an hour) Guys Black dress pants, white dress shirt, dark tie, black or dark dress shoes. Don t forget dress socks and your belt. No jeans. Girls Black Dress, black skirt and white blouse, or black and white pant suit. No jeans. Hair, make-up and jewelry are acceptable as long as within reason. **The rule of thumb is, If it distracts the audience from the musical performance then it is inappropriate. In-Class Materials To be prepared for class each day, students must have the following; -Positive Attitude -Instrument -Method Book -Music Sheets -3-Ring Binder -Pencil Method Book 6 th Grade- Essential Elements for Band, Book 1 7 th Grade- Essential Elements for Band, Book 1 and Habits of a Successful Middle School Musician 8 th Grade- Habits of a Successful Middle School Musician The 3-ring binder may be the big one used for other classes, or a smaller separate one. -Woodwind players will be required to have 3 reeds in good playing condition in their cases at all times. -Brass players will be required to have a bottle of valve oil in their cases at all times. -Percussion players will be required to have a pair of drum sticks and keyboard mallets at all times.

4 Band Room Management Discipline Students will follow the Princeton Middle School Discipline Plan as stated in the Bulldog Discipline Matrix. Also, band students will participate in a program that will reward positive behaviors and discourage negative behaviors in band class in order to create a pleasant and productive atmosphere each day. This system is referred to as Jewel Day!!! Team Points Classes will be split into teams. Students showing positive behaviors will earn points for their team. Students displaying unwanted behaviors will lose points for their team. The team with the most points in each grade at the end of the marking period will earn a prize. Individual Points Students showing desired behaviors will also receive a jewel as a token of their positive action. Each jewel is worth 1 team point. 5 Princeton Middle BAND Rules B e in your assigned area A lways follow directions N ecessary talking only D emonstrate respect at all times Princeton Middle Bandroom Procedures 1. As you enter the bandroom, get your instrument, 3-ring binder, music and/or book, pencil, and any other materials needed for rehearsal. 2. Put your books and materials for other classes in the assigned area. 3. Sit in your seat, put the materials you need for that day on your stand in the proper order (see board), and have your instrument ready to play. 4. Have yourself and your instrument prepared to rehearse on time. 5. When rehearsal is over, pack up your materials, make sure your chair and stand are straight and your area clean, put your instrument away and get you other possessions, and quietly leave when dismissed. *Do not pack up until told to do so.*
