1 COMPARATIVE PEDAGOGY 2014 Janet Pranschke is a former President of The New York Singing Teachers Association and is the Founding Director of NYSTA s Professional Development Program. NYSTA s Distinguished Voice Professional Certificate was awarded to her for completing the 5- course PDP curriculum of anatomy/physiology, acoustics, vocal health, repertoire and pedagogy. She also completed a 6 week internship with renowned otolaryngologist, Dr. Peak Woo at Mt. Sinai Hospital and team-teaches with speech therapists to rehabilitate injured voices. In recognition of her work done with the PDP, a scholarship was created in her name. The Janet Pranschke Professional Development Scholarship grants full tuition to NYSTA s 5-course Core Curriculum to be presented to one Apprentice NYSTA Member each academic year. JANET PRANSCHKE MODERATOR Janet, a lyric soprano, made her operatic debut with the Santa Fe Opera as a member of that company s prestigious apprentice program and has since sung over 35 leading roles with opera companies throughout the US. As winner of the Artist Management International Music Competition, she was presented in her Weill Recital Hall concert debut and as the winner of the Liederkranz Foundation Vocal Competition, she made her Carnegie Hall concert debut. She won many other awards and grants, including the Sullivan Foundation and the Minna Kaufmann Ruud and gained national recognition as a Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions finalist and prize winner in the Munich International Vocal Competition. Janet is on the voice faculty of Wagner College, and maintains a private teaching studio on Staten Island.

2 American Tenor Richard Leech is one of the most celebrated lyric tenors of his generation. For nearly thirty years he has sung many of the most demanding and well-known roles of the Italian and French repertoire both on disc and on the stages of the world's leading opera houses and symphonies. RICHARD LEECH Following his much heralded 1987 European debut with Berlin s Deutsche Oper, as Raoul in Les Huguenots, Mr. Leech soon appeared with virtually every major opera house of the world including the Met, Vienna, La Scala, Paris, Covent Garden, Chicago, San Francisco, LA, and San Diego, as well as the Vienna, Prague, New York and LA Philharmonic Orchestras, the National and Montréal Symphonies, and myriad others. Since his 1989 Met debut, as Rodolfo La Bohème, he has sung nearly 200 Met performances in more than a dozen leading roles. Balancing his performance and teaching careers, Mr. Leech is on the voice faculty of Rutgers University Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers Opera Institute, and the Castleton Festival s C.A.T.S. Young Artist Training Seminar. He teaches privately at the studios of the Opera America National Opera Center in NY and often presents Master Classes while on the road such as for USC, UCSD, and most recently for Martina Arroyo s Prelude to Performance program. He was the winner of the 1988 prestigious Richard Tucker Award, and in 2000 he was the recipient of The Voice Foundation s Voice Education Research and Awareness (VERA) Award. He attended Eastman School of Music and Binghamton University and credits his success to the long-term mentorship of Carmen Savoca and Peyton Hibbitt at Tri-Cities Opera in Binghamton, NY. Mr. Leech is featured on more than twenty recordings in many of the works for which he is so well known including: La Bohème, Rigoletto, Ballo, and Faust. His solo release from the heart can be found on the Telarc label.

3 Praised for her delightful (The Boston Globe) and delicately compassionate (Times Herald Record) singing, soprano Elizabeth Kling is gaining recognition as a dynamic and versatile performer. In her Carnegie Hall début, she created the title role of Lucy by Tom Cipullo, and her performance was acclaimed as excellent (The Big City). In Colorado, Elizabeth has sung leading roles with Loveland Opera Theater, Luminous Thread Productions, and Coal Creek Theater of Louisville. She has been a guest artist in recitals at the University of Colorado, Boulder and Metropolitan State University of Denver. She was a 2013 national semi-finalist in The American Prize Art Song Competition. ELIZABETH KLING Elizabeth holds a master of music degree from New England Conservatory, and a doctorate from The City University of New York Graduate Center. Published in 2011, her dissertation is titled The Art Songs of Tom Cipullo. In 2012, Elizabeth was one of eight teachers across the US to receive the Emerging Leader Award from the National Association of Teachers of Singing. She is multi-lingual and specializes in crossover vocal techniques. As a master class clinician, she has presented at the Colorado-Wyoming NATS chapter, and at several universities around the country, including The University of Colorado, Boulder and California State Polytechnic University. Recent conference presentations include Redefining Versatility: Teaching Classical Singers How to Belt and Unabashedly Tonal: The Art Songs of Tom Cipullo (lecture-recital). This fall, she will join the faculty at Auburn University.

4 Amy Cooper, MS CCC-SLP, is the Director of Speech Pathology at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai, where she specializes in care of the professional voice and singing voice rehabilitation. She splits her clinical time between practices in the Union Square area and Columbus Circle, where she and Dr. Michael Pitman, laryngologist, run a voice team, designed to provide comprehensive care from various specialties to those experiencing voice and swallowing difficulties. She previously served as Associate Director of the Schein Voice Center at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. AMY COOPER A trained singer herself, Ms. Cooper completed her undergraduate studies at Northwestern University, and her graduate degree from Teachers College, Columbia University. She also received a certificate in Music Theatre from Northwestern. Ms. Cooper has presented nationally and internationally on rehabilitation of the injured Broadway singer, at such conferences as The Voice Foundation, American Speech Language Hearing Association, British Voice Association, and the Pan-European Voice Consortium. She has been published in The Journal of Voice, ENT Journal, and Laryngoscope. She treats private clients with neurogenic speech disorders as well. In her other life, favorite roles have included Florence in Chess, Maria in West Side Story, Maggie in A Chorus Line, Trina in In Trousers, Luisa in The Fantasticks, and Anne in La Cage Aux Folles.

5 John West has cultivated a reputation as one of New York City's most versatile speech coaches. He specializes in accent reduction, enhancement of the speaking voice, executive preparation for public speaking, and dialect coaching. John initially explored his love for voice by spending four years in Nashville studying with Brett Manning, founder of Singing Success." He graduated summa cum laude from Northern Kentucky University, where he earned a BFA in performance. During this time, John studied speech extensively with Sandra Forman, renowned author of Your Voice and Articulation and Public Speaking: Today and Tomorrow. He also honed his skills in IPA and dialects under the guidance of top Cincinnati dialect coach Michael King. JOHN WEST John has been a dialect coach for several shows, including The Secret Garden, Over the River & Through the Woods, Brigadoon, and The Imaginary Invalid. He serves on the faculty of New York s prestigious Open Jar Institute, and has been a featured speaker at The International Thespian Society Festival. He has narrated over 20 productions and frequently emcees across the country. John especially enjoys holding workshops and master classes throughout the year for corporate events on speech enhancement. He also conducts workshops at high schools and colleges across the United States and Canada on voice for the actor and audition technique. Additionally, John is a member of and has spoken at meetings of American MENSA. In addition to teaching, John continues to work as an actor and singer, and is currently appearing in Theatre Row's production of NEWSical, ("Fast, funny, and irreverent! NEWSical makes it possible to get high on hilarity!" -NY Times) and has appeared in leading roles on Broadway national tours (The Drowsy Chaperone, The Producers), as well as numerous regional productions, commercials, and voiceovers for radio and television.

6 David McCall is a New York based actor, singer, director, and music director who began his studies conducting imaginary orchestras in his family s kitchen. In pursuit of formal music study, David traveled from his native West Tennessee to Kentucky s Murray State University. As a Vocal and Academic Scholarship recipient, he trained with Carnegie Hall soloists Dr. Sonya Gabrielle Baker and Dr. Elizabeth Johnson Knight, Baroque and Twentieth Century music specialist Dr. Randall Black, and the Southern Division President of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), Dr. Bradley Almquist to earn his BA in Vocal Performance. DAVID MCCALL A member of Actors Equity Association, David has originated roles in more than twenty new plays, readings, and staged readings by up and coming new playwrights through the annual Appalachian Festival of Plays and Playwrights. Through Barter s touring branch, The Barter Players, David traveled the east coast from Maine to Florida leading workshops for all ages in voice, acting, improvisation, and movement. David has been the music director for numerous world premiere musicals and national tours seen by audiences across the Southeast. David is happiest when he is combining his music skills, love of teaching, and encouraging spirit as a private voice teacher and vocal coach and he is wholeheartedly committed to helping his students unlock, discover, and free their individual voices in a safe and encouraging environment.

7 Lisa Rochelle has served the professional New York theatre community as Voice Teacher and Performance Coach since 1993, following an extensive performing career that includes leading roles on Broadway and Off-Broadway, Broadway National Tour, regional theatre, featured television, commercial and voiceover credits. With professional students performing in all levels of theatre, film and television, Ms. Rochelle is also a Master Class Instructor in both Vocal Technique and Audition Technique. Her teaching is devoted to helping performers achieve their goals by de-mystifying singing; from basic technique-building to meeting the challenging demands of an 8-show week and rigorous rehearsal and touring schedules. LISA ROCHELLE Ms. Rochelle has cultivated a special interest in working with performers who have had trouble resolving technical issues; she often works as a Singing Voice Specialist in collaboration with medical professionals in the retraining of injured voices, having specialized training in vocal pedagogy and rehabilitation (vocology). Mentoring by pioneer vocologist Ron Clairmont (1980 s-1990 s) inspired her subsequent vocology work while maintaining a performing career. Internships and observerships with otolaryngologists and voice pathologists include: Mt. Sinai Grabscheid Voice Center (Peak Woo, MD and Linda Carroll, PhD), Vocology training with voice expert, Anat Keidar, PhD., among others. Ms. Rochelle incorporates aspects of a variety of disciplines into her teaching, based upon the unique needs of each student. Rooted in classical ideology, her work employs principles of several voice/body/mind techniques, most notable and distinctive are vocal self-massaging techniques developed by mentor Ron Clairmont. She draws from her decades of experience as singer and teacher, integrating aspects of approaches from her current work with Joan Lader and Shirley Tennyson (NY). Private clients range from La Guardia High School students to Broadway veterans and other voice teachers. Conservatory and faculty positions include Marymount Manhattan College, O Neill Theatre Institute/ NTI, The NY Institute for Alexander Technique,etc. Ms. Rochelle is certified in all levels of Somatic Voicework TM/The LoVetri Method (CCM Vocal Pedagogy) and has completed the full core curriculum of NYSTA s Professional Development Program. As former Board Member and Co-Director of NYSTA s PDP, she feels privileged to have the opportunity to share her work with her esteemed colleagues.
