1 Welcome to CHD100 CHD100- Music in Early Childhood - Handout The goal of this course is to provide an understanding of the importance of music in the early childhood years and the ways in which it can become part of the curriculum and of children s lives. Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to: Identify five ways in which music impacts a child s development Identify at least three ways in which music can be mood-altering Recognize the developmental stages of musical experiences Recognize the role of both quality and variety in the selection of music for children List the aspects of musical variety Identify the five kinds of musical experiences young children should have Define the musical elements young children can and should experience References: Pica, R. 6 The Music Center Learning centers offer children individually and in small groups opportunities to further explore their interests. When you provide a music center in your classroom, children can listen to music, play instruments, and experiment with sound or movement at their own developmental levels and without adult supervision.
