6 GUIDELINES FOR AUTHORS 1. JM welcomes for consideration: articles addressing aspects of musical style in all periods, from the historical, analytic, or critical points of view; articles on performance practice and editing of both early and later music; short reports of work in progress; studies of important holdings and new acquisitions in libraries and archives; reviews of significant contributions to the scholarly literature, including editions of music; conference reports; symposia on special subjects. In accordance with our aim to present within each issue of JM a balanced perspective of musicological activity through the variety of our articles, contributions will be judged rigorously not only for quality in content and style, but also on the criteria of uniqueness, originality, and diversity. All manuscripts and editorial inquiries should be addressed to Marian Green, The Journal of Musicology, P.O. Box 4516, Louisville, KY Manuscripts should be typed with double-spacing on paper measuring 8/2" x 11" with margins of at least one inch. All indented quotations should also be double-spaced. In event of lengthy quotations in languages other than English, translations should be provided in parallel columns. Two copies of the manuscript must be submitted, one of them the ribbon copy. 3. Footnotes, tables, and captions must be typewritten, double-spaced on separate sheets. 4. Music examples must be presented as legibly as possible, on separate sheets, numbered, and provided with captions above each example. Points of insertion for these examples should be clearly indicated within the running text. The author is requested to exercise moderation with regard to the number and length of examples submitted. 5. Although the basic musical symbols are available in the JM font, their use within the running text should be avoided whenever possible. 6. Glossy positive photographs should be provided for all continuous tone illustrations. 7. In most matters of form and style, JM follows the model of A Manual of Style, 13th edition (Chicago, 1982), with the exception of format for citations from the scholarly literature. For these citations the form is the following: Edward T. Cone, "The Authority of Music Criticism," Journal of the American Musicological Society XXXIV (1981), 6-13; Terence Bailey, The Intonation Formulas of Western Chant (Toronto, 1974), pp The author of an accepted article will receive one set of proofs, which should be corrected and returned within 10 days. Any major changes in the proofs aside from omissions and typographical errors will be considered author's alterations and may, at the discretion of the editor, be charged to the author. Advertising rates are available upon request from the Editor SUBSCRIPTION RATES FOR Some back issues available: Individual or Institution: $24.00 Vol. II (1983), Vol. III (1984) Student: $18.00 $24.00-set ($28.00, abroad) From abroad: $28.00 $6.00-each ($8.00, abroad) Subscription applications, checks and money orders, and all changes of address should be mailed to: The Journal of Musicology, P.O.
