1 Program Review Update Performing Arts (Report Due: October 15, 2016) Program Description (source: Faculty) Performing Arts programs offer a wide range of courses in music, theater and dance, including fundamentals, appreciation, theory, history, technique and performance practice. Instrumental and vocal ensembles along with theatrical productions provide public performance opportunities to majors and non-majors alike. Performing Arts at College of the Desert is rooted in the passionate belief that the arts are an essential part of life and education, integral in the social development of every person, and vital to the understanding of diverse cultures. Students learn to express themselves artistically, both as individuals and in collaboration with others. Our community sees, supports, and sustains performing arts education not only for the immediate values of performance, but for ways of understanding the world, for the development of the mind and body, and for many underlying skills and understandings that are necessary for success in life. It is the goal of the performing arts program to: help students develop their artistic and intellectual potential to the highest possible level. provide a broad foundation of knowledge in the theory, history, literature and practice of performing arts for students wishing to pursue degree, certificate, transfer and vocational agendas. promote community awareness of the relationship between the performing arts and the history of human values, cultural diversity and the liberal arts tradition. promote the development of discipline-specific skills appropriate to the training of those who wish to teach, those who will pursue advanced studies or professional employment, and those who will use their artistic training in community settings and other cultural service areas. enable all students to benefit from the cultural richness of our heritage through both traditional and experimental performance practices. Students Served (source: Faculty) General education students benefit from courses that fit GE patterns for CSU, UC and IGETC. Performing Arts majors, lifelong learners and general education students benefit from performing opportunities in music, theatre and dance. Students pursuing performing arts degrees benefit from courses of study, both academic and applied, in music, theatre and dance. Vocationally-inclined students benefit from courses in digital audio and technical theater. 1 Program Review Update 2016

5 Narrative Interpretation (source: Faculty) Program enrollments continue to grow with increased enrollments as more sections are added. Most sections are full, particularly those courses that serve general education. Newer aspects of the program have added students, e.g., jazz and musical theatre programs/certificates. Success and retention rates are steady and higher than the college average. 5 Program Review Update 2016

6 Resources: Staffing (source: Research Office) FT by Faculty Load: Narrative Interpretation (source: Faculty) Fulltime instructors in Theatre Technology, Commercial Music and Dance and are needed to enable full curriculum offerings (degrees + certificates) and develop a transfer degree in Dance. Facilities (source: Faculty) 1) List of all facilities (Please indicate if any of these were added last year): Theater Too (T1); Stagecraft Center (STG) M2; SOC 11; CMH-4 Faculty offices: CMH; T; 2) Assessment of adequacy of current facilities: Inadequate, see Program Challenges. Performing spaces (Pollock Theatre/Theatre Too) lack wings and fly spaces. T1 roof was repaired on the outside, but inside damage continues to occur whenever there is rainfall. Front doors of the Pollock still need matching paint! Restrooms in CMH have been partially updated. Old sinks & toilets were re-installed and still leak. Ceiling still needs to be painted; inside doorjamb still needs to be repaired & painted. Rehearsal spaces for instrumental and vocal ensembles barely meet minimum standards. M2 reconfiguration is a small step in the right direction. Desperately need an additional classroom space due to the loss of CMH-1. Must be soundproofed. The need for dedicated dressing room space for performances that occur in T1 was addressed upon completion the Stagecraft Center. Still need dressing room space (modulars?) for Pollock Theatre. Anticipate a future need for additional Wenger practice modules due to increasing enrollments in Applied Music. A Performing Arts Center with classrooms & theatres is a high priority need. 6 Program Review Update 2016

7 Equipment and Supplies (source: Faculty) Pianos in all facilities are in need of repair, regulation and a regular, frequent tuning schedule. Increase in repair budget for musical instruments and theatre equipment. Additional lighting and sound equipment upgrades in T1 and CMHPT. Additional special effects equipment needed for student training and production use. Additional state-of-the-art tools and equipment for Stagecraft Center. Additional band instruments for student use in class and performance settings. Program Challenges (source: Faculty working with Dean) Facilities and staff continue to be the biggest challenges to Performing Arts programs. FT tenure-track positions needed in Technical Theater, Commercial Music and Dance. Inferior spaces for large choral/instrumental ensembles and theater/dance productions, as well as student access to practice rooms, create a large challenge in recruiting students and serving students who do come to COD. Students who were well served by local high schools in the performing arts often choose to go elsewhere for higher education (including other regional community colleges, such as Mount San Jacinto and Riverside Community College) with the result that the students who do attend COD are less prepared technically than they should be. Shortage of accessible practice rooms for music students. Lack of working technology to track positive attendance in our practice facilities. Inadequate storage space for musical instruments and instructional music libraries. Report on completion of program objectives last year (objectives were specified on PRU two years ago) Other Program Accomplishments (source: Faculty) Successful productions were mounted fall and spring, including Rent in the Pollock Theatre (November 2015) and Victor/Victoria at the McCallum Theater (April/May 2016). A number of musical performances were staged, including guest artist presentations, free faculty and student recitals, vocal and instrumental ensemble concerts. Collaborations continued between departments on campus and with Palm Springs High School, along with several public events, including gallery openings. Current Program Objectives (taken from last year s PRU) 1. CTE approval of Commercial Music Program/Certificate Program Objectives for next year (source: Faculty, working with Dean as needed) 1. CTE approval of Commercial Music Program/Certificate 7 Program Review Update 2016

Please justify and explain each Faculty request based on rubric criteria for your college. Place titles on list in order (rank) or importance. Indicate New (N) or Replacement (R) Annual TCP* 1. THEATRE TECHNOLOGY Reason: Unlike the performance side of Theatre Arts program, which experienced a healthy growth pattern prior to the resignation our only FT faculty position, theatre technology has been underrepresented for a number of years. In addition to production crew classes, we attempt to offer Intro to Design and Stagecraft classes every other semester (per the college catalog). Finding qualified adjuncts to cover these classes has been such a challenge that they have been canceled for two consecutive semesters. The reinstatement of this position is essential to our transfer degree and will enable us to utilize the new Stagecraft Center facilities to offer required courses in set design, lighting design, sound design, costume design and stage management. There are solid career paths in this field. R $100, COMMERCIAL MUSIC Reason: A new certificate is being developed to train students in the commercial music field for entry into the workforce. The addition of such a program will contribute to the college s mission by helping to cultivate interdisciplinary connections in media arts and entertainment technology. There are solid career paths in this field. N $100, DANCE Reason: Dance is the only Performing Arts discipline lacking FT faculty. There are currently ten Dance courses in the catalog, seven of which have not been offered in years due to the lack of qualified adjunct faculty in this area. The remaining three courses (Jazz, Ballet & Dance History) are regularly covered by one adjunct. All of the area high schools have active dance programs, but their graduates pursue advanced training elsewhere. A full-time instructor is essential to articulation with the high schools and will contribute to the development of a transfer degree in Dance. N $100,000 8 Program Review Update 2016
