2 Artist Bios Brazilian Percussion - Josh Dekaney, Dr. Elisa Macedo Dekaney, Syracuse University Brazilian Music Ensemble Josh Dekaney received a Master's degree in music performance from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music, a Bachelor's degree in music education from the University of Kentucky and has studied extensively in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In 1994 Dekaney won the Multiple Percussion contest at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention in Atlanta, Ga. and is a Yamaha Young Performing Artist. Dekaney performed in the pit with the Cavalier's Drum & Bugle Corp from and taught there in '96 and '97. He has also taught steel drums and Brazilian music at the Florida State University. Prior to graduate school, Dekaney served an internship with the Yamaha Corporation of America in Grand Rapids, MI. Currently in Syracuse, NY he is teaching the new Brazilian music ensemble at Syracuse University and is freelancing throughout central New York playing jazz, Caribbean styles, and musicals. In addition Dekaney has also performed with the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra, the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra, the Lexington Philharmonic, and the Binghamton Philharmonic. Dekaney performs exclusively on Paiste cymbals, sounds, and gongs. Dr. Elisa Macedo Dekaney is assistant professor of music education at Syracuse University where she teaches choral rehearsal techniques, choral

3 literature and the Brazilian Ensemble. She was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where she earned a bachelor's degree in piano performance at the Seminário Teológico Batista do Sul do Brasil and a bachelor's degree in communication from Universidade Federal Fluminense. She continued her studies in the United States, earning a master's degree in choral conducting from the University of Missouri-Kansas City under the guidance of Eph Ehly. In recognition of her dedication to her art Dr. Dekaney was awarded the Outstanding Service Award from the Conservatory Organization Awards in Dr. Dekaney received her Ph.D. in choral music education from the Florida State University under the tutelage of André J. Thomas and Rodney Eichenberger. She has been an active researcher and conductor in the United States and Brazil. She is a member of the society Pi Kappa Lambda.

4 She-e Wu - International Marimba Artist A native of Taiwan, She-e Wu has performed as a guest recitalist and clinician at numerous schools of music throughout the United States. She recently

5 performed a marimba concerto by Eric Ewazen - a faculty member of the Julliard School of Music - at the Storm King Festival in New York, a piece she premiered with the Moment Musical Orchestra in Taiwan in She-e has performed on the radio broadcast of the final concert at the World Marimba Competition in Stuttgart, Germany and she was a featured concert artist at the 4th National Percussion Convention of Spain in Seville and the Hawaiian Music Educators Association Convention. She-e Wu is also a member of the Bob Becker Ensemble based in Toronto, Canada. During 2000, Ms. Wu taught and/or performed at the Leigh Howard Stevens Summer Marimba Seminar, the 2nd Taipei International Percussion Summer Camp, Journées de la Percussion in Paris and the 25th Percussive Arts Society International Convention in Dallas, Texas. She-e Wu holds Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees from the University of North Texas. Her teachers included Dr. Robert Schietroma, Leigh Howard Stevens, Ed Soph and Tzong-Ching Ju. She is currently a faculty member at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey and also taught marimba and percussion as an Assistant Professor of Music at West Virginia University in Morgantown and at the University of North Texas. She-e Wu is a marimba artist and clinician for Malletech.

6 Doug Iglesrud - Timpanist, Syracuse Symphony Orchestra DOUGLAS IGELSRUD has been keeping Syracuse Symphony audiences on the edge of their seat for over three decades with the thundering sound that emanates from those glorious brass colored kettle drums (better known as timpani). Mr. Igelsrud holds bachelor!s and master s degrees from the University of Miami and from the University of Iowa. Mr. Igelsrud did advanced study at the Cleveland Institute of Music with his mentor, Cleveland Orchestra Timpanist Cloyd Duff, and performed in the Institute orchestra under the baton of James Levine. He has also played with the San Antonio Symphony, Colorado Philharmonic, and the Birmingham Symphony. OCC Ragtime Ensemble - Dr. Rob Bridge, director Now in it's third year, the OCC Ragtime Ensemble performs ragtime xylophone music (primarily from George Hamilton Green; Joe Green; Harry Breuer and players from that tradition.) Each member of the group is responsible to learn the solo part to at least one rag and then play in the back- up orchestra for other soloists. We hope you enjoy the performance (and your lunch!)

7 Marching Percussion - Baldwinsville HS, Central Square HS; Jordan Elbridge HS; OCC Indoor Marching Percussion Ensemble Baldwinsville High School Winter Drum Line The Baldwinsville High School Winter Drum Line 2002 will be performing three selections from the Dave Matthews Band album Crash: Two Step; Proudest Monkey; and Too Much. The Drum Line Staff includes: Miss Katerina Ron-Coe; Mr. Peter Pumkin- Eater Cutler; Mr. David Lee Roth Kimack; and Mr. Rob Zombie Bridge. While a true cure is ever elusive, we feel that real progress has been made by the caring individuals that shared their time and efforts this year. The Central Square Winter Drumline This year s production features the music from The Planets by Gustav Holst arranged by Dr. Robert Bridge. The Planets, composed for orchestra between 1914 and 1916, is a suite of seven tone poems, each describing the planets from Mars to Neptune; Earth was excluded and Pluto hadn't been discovered yet. At a time when Holst was finding large-scale composition difficult, due to demands on his time, his friend Clifford Bax talked to him about astrology. The clearly defined character of each planet suggested the contrasting moods of a work that was unlike anything he had yet written. Today we present to you the Mars, Mercury, Venus, and Jupiter with sound, color, and design to portray the images of each planet. The 2002 staff include

The 2002 Central Square Winter Drumline would like to thank the Boosters and band parents for all of their hard work and patience. Jordan- Elbridge Winter Drumline 2002 This year the Jordan Elbridge Winter Drumline features the music of FISHBONE. A band with eclectic offerings, FISHBONE is hard to categorize. Serious lyrics, serious grooves, and big fun combine to deliver FISHBONE S message of tolerance and change. Today s selections include: HFL; Bonin; Change; and Servitude. As always, we wish to thank our parents especially: Bonnie and Ted MacCollum; The English family; The Brims; and Mark Daniels. A big shout out to the JE Band Boosters for all you do! OCC Indoor Marching Percussion Ensemble In its second year of existence, the OCC Indoor Marching Percussion Ensemble will feature the music of Argentine composer Alberto Ginastera (pronounced Hee- nah- stare- a). Musical selections from the ballet suite "Estancia" will form the foundation of our 2002 program. This music was originally commissioned by Lincoln Kirstein for the 1941 South American tour of the Ballet Caravan with George Balachine as choreographer. The ballet presents various aspects of life on an Argentine ranch during a typical day. The segments of the show are subtitled "The Land Workers",

"Wheat Dance", and "Malambo". As is typical with most South American music, there is a strong rhythmic quality and sense of groove found throughout the piece.

Billy Ward NYC Drum Set Artist Billy recently completed the 16 stop DW Spectrum Of Sound Tour with DW vice president and drum-maker genius, John Good. For the last year and a half, Billy toured with Joan Osborne. Billy performed at the Modern Drummer Festival 00, demonstrating his unique approach to drumming technique. One glance below at the list of musicians that Billy s worked with, and you will no

10 doubt notice the diversity of styles of music that Billy plays. He has played drums on more than 50 albums and 50 film soundtracks and in recent years, in addition to his drumming, has turned his ears toward producing. His solo album, Two Hands Clapping got a (perfect) 5 star drummer s album of the year rating in Modern Drummer. Drummers from all over the world have responded very enthusiastically to Billy s Concepts articles which have been appearing in Modern Drummer Magazine for more than a year. As a writer and clinician, Billy emphasizes a more musical approach to drumming with an emphasis on the psychological aspects of making music on drums.
