4 URBANA MIDDLE SCHOOL BAND PROGRAM URBANA, ILLINOIS Urbana, population approximately 36,000, is located in the heart of East Central Illinois. As the home of the University of Illinois, it has received recognition as one of the nation s fastest developing technological centers. URBANA MIDDLE SCHOOL Urbana Middle School is comprised of about 1000 students in grades six through eight. The mission of UMS is to provide continuous social growth, emotional growth and academic success in an atmosphere which promotes excellence and equity for all students. In addition to a rich core curriculum, UMS offers a wide variety of electives and co-curricular activities for its student body. Dedicated faculty, staff, administrators and parents strive to nurture and develop each student s talents within our diverse school community. MUSIC IN THE URBANA SCHOOLS The music curriculum in Urbana is a comprehensive K-12 program that provides numerous opportunities for students to experience the arts. The Fine Arts Team offers Art, Music, Dance and Drama to students in grades k-5. Students may join the strings program in fourth grade, band instruction begins in the fifth grade and chorus begins in the six grade. Students also have the opportunity to participate in a general music course entitled Survey of Music. The Urbana Middle School music program consists of three orchestras, six choruses and six bands. Students are also active in Jazz Ensemble and the Tigers Steel Drum Band. Our music program incorporates team teaching, which offers many benefits to both the teaching staff and students. Students often maintain contact with an instructor throughout their years of music education in Urbana. This continuity allows us to help our students become motivated learners and lovers of music. URBANA MIDDLE SCHOOL CONCERT BAND The UMS Concert Band is the premier band of the Urbana Middle School music program. It is a select group of 6 th, 7 th, and 8 th grade students who rehearse before school three times per week. During the school day, these students are members of one of six grade level bands that meet on a daily basis. The Concert Band has a strong tradition of musical excellence. They have performed for the Illinois Music Educators Association State Conference, Ohio Music Educators North Central Conference, and have been selected to compete in the University of Illinois Superstate Concert Band Festival for ten consecutive years, where they performed as the Honor Band in The Concert Band consistently receives Superior ratings at the Illinois Grade School Music Association District and State Contests.

5 McCRACKEN MIDDLE SCHOOL BAND PROGRAM SKOKIE, ILLINOIS The Village of Skokie is located just 16 miles northwest of downtown Chicago. Home to approximately 60,000 residents, Skokie covers 10.2 square miles of land. Superior municipal services, together with the nationally acclaimed Skokie Park District, the superb Skokie Public Library, the preeminent Northshore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie, the Skokie Northshore Sculpture Park and outstanding school districts make Skokie an excellent place to live. The Village is a recipient of the Governor's Hometown Award and has received "All America City" finalist distinction from the National Civic League. McCRACKEN MIDDLE SCHOOL Skokie School District 73.5 is home to approximately 1100 kindergarten through 8th grade students. We have three schools: Elizabeth Meyer School (pre-kindergarten and kindergarten), John Middleton School (grades 1 through 5) and Oliver McCracken Middle School (grades 6 through 8). Our students have ancestral origins from all over the world. Nearly half of our students are bilingual, speaking nearly 40 languages. Our students are more diverse, economically, racially, religiously, linguistically and socially, than most schools in the surrounding suburbs. Our community embraces and celebrates this diversity and appreciates the opportunity children and families have to interact and form friendships with such a wide spectrum of people. McCracken Middle School serves a population of about 375 students. Recognized as a National School of Excellence by the Blue Ribbon School Program in 2001, McCracken students achieve not only academic success, but have a tradition of excelling in the fine arts. McCRACKEN MIDDLE SCHOOL SYMPHONIC BAND Currently, 170 students in grades four through eight participate in the Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Fifth Grade Band, Beginning Band and various chamber ensembles. The McCracken Middle School Symphonic Band, among the elite of middle school bands in Illinois, has performed at several prestigious events in recent years include two performances at the MENC North-Central Conference (2001 and 2005) and several performances at the IMEA All- State Conference in the past five years. The Symphonic Band has made five appearances at the University of Illinois Superstate Concert Band Festival, performing as the honor band in 2001 and The Symphonic Band has also received 42 consecutive superior ratings at the Illinois Grade School Music Association District Organization Contest and has been selected as an honors ensemble at all three IGSMA State Festivals. The Symphonic Band has also performed at the IMEA Music Education Day at the Capitol, Plainfield Concert Band Festival, the Midwest Music Festival, Skokie Festival of Cultures, AYSO Opening Ceremonies, and WBBM News Radio th anniversary promotion. In the spring of 2001, the band was highlighted in WLS-TV s (Chicago s ABC affiliate) feature Someone You Should Know. Twice in the last five years, Skokie Mayor George Van Dusen and the Village Board of Trustees have passed resolutions honoring our students' outstanding achievements in instrumental music. The success of our band program is due to the hard work of the administration, the parents, the community, the educators, and most importantly, our students.
