2 Dear Directors and Students, It gives me great pleasure to announce CMEA s 10 th year of the San Diego All-County Middle School Honor Band. I would like to also welcome back once again Dr. Dan Nelson, of Point Loma Nazarene University. With his direction you can be assured that students will become better musicians enjoy the process and accomplish great music in a short amount of time. This experience goes beyond just music education with students coming together from all over the county and working toward a common goal. Students will take pride in a job well done, make new friends, and develop cooperative learning. This is something that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives. Another important part of this experience is working towards the audition. New this year in an attempt to encourage students to participate in the CBDA All-state auditions and SCSBOA auditions. We have been given exclusive permission by CBDA to receive and use next years state music audition before anyone else in the state. This will give the San Diego Students County students a head start in preparing for State auditions in December of 2009 and Southern Auditions in January. Having said that this music is challenging and do your best. You will be ranked on how much you learn and how well you play it. It could very well be that no one in your entire section can play it. Students will be given 7-10 minutes to perform this prepared piece (see required audition material- CBDA 2010), memorized scales, and be asked to sight-read. Over the last 10 years the judges have turned the audition process into a chance to improve the students musicianship with helpful suggestions and tips to better future auditions. This is much like a private lesson. We once again have the exclusive use on the Point Loma Nazarene University for our performance and rehearsals; it is a beautiful campus overlooking the ocean. We will also be recording the concert this year again and offering CD s and possibly DVD s to commemorate the performance. Applications with a check or money order are due in advance with application postmarked by Monday March 30 st, Once you have submitted the application we will contact you with your exact time and further instructions no later than April 8th. Spencer Caldwell CMEA JH/MS Honorband Coordinator Dr. Dan Nelson Conductor Bio Dr. Dan Nelson graduated from Midamerica Nazarene University in 1974, he taught band, orchestra, and Choir for 17 years at public schools in Kansas City and in Minneapolis. He received his Masters and PhD in Music Education from the University of Minnesota. Dr. Nelson began teaching at PLNU 17 years ago, in Since arriving, the concert band has grown from 7 to 75, there are now two jazz bands, numerous combos, and a full orchestra. He is a member of MENC, ITG, CBDNA, CIDA, and IAJE, and in demand as a clinician for festivals and schools. Dr Dan Nelson conducted the CMEA all-state festival band in Pasadena 2005, inaugural San Dieguito Honor High School Band 2005 as well as the CMEA San Diego All County Honor Band in He was named CMEASBS outstanding music educator of the year for 2005 (2005 was a good year). And had a conducting scholarship endowed in his name for PLNU.

Students must perform required prepared solo (play as much as you can even if you can t play it all you should still try out) -see required music on next page or visit 3. Be prepared for sight-reading. 4. You will be notified no later than April 8th of the exact details of your audition thru your band director, mailer and/or By auditioning you are committing to all rehearsal dates. Don t audition if you know you can t make the rehearsal dates. If Accepted: Students will be asked to pay a $40.00 membership fee to cover costs of Music, Guest Director, Performance Facility, and Performance Polo Shirt. Any Student who fails to attend rehearsals may be excluded from the concert. No one will be excluded due to Financial hardships please include a letter explaining hardship with application. ENDORSEMENT We, the undersigned, recommend as an outstanding student and musician. He/she has excellent character and is deserving of consideration for the CMEA SBS Honor Band.
