A favourite of Choral Fest attendees, Dr. Meredith previously conducted the Choral Fest Massed Choir in 1999 and in CHORAL FEST 2018: WORKING WITH ADULT SINGERS WORKSHOP Dr. Meredith will give a workshop in Moncton on Working with Adult Singers in advance of the Choral Fest weekend. 4 MEMBER NEWS SUSSEX CHORAL SOCIETY SEEKS ACCOM- PANIST FOR FALL 2018 The Sussex Choral Society is looking for an accompanist starting in the fall of The chorus meets weekly from September to May, with holidays off. We have 16 rehearsals in the fall, with a concert in December, and 20 rehearsals in the spring with a concert in late May. We sing an eclectic mixture of music, classical, folk, Celtic, pop, show tunes, spirituals, SATB. The accompanist will work with incoming Sussex Choral Society Director Christopher Lane. Please contact us at scoburn@nb.sympatico.ca SAINT JOHN MEN S CHORUS SEEKS MUSI- CAL DIRECTOR Deadline for applications: April 30, 2018 The Saint John Men s Chorus is seeking a full time Musical Director beginning September The Chorus is made up of between 25 and 30 men singing in four parts. Musical selections have been a mixture of challenging classical, pop, folk, show tunes, and spirituals. Typically practice has been held on Tuesday evenings with a Christmas and a spring concert. Alternative timing and concert formats would be considered. All applications must be received by April 30, SINGERS WANTED FOR MESSIAH SING-A- LONG Deadline to register: April 27 Performance: Sunday, May 6 A sing-a-long presentation of selections from Handel s Messiah will take place at St. Paul s United Church on Sunday, May 6. Choir director, Alexis Ervin and organist, Sharon Pond are looking for singers in all voice parts. If you have sung the Messiah before, or have always wanted to give it a try, you can reserve a spot by ing: stpaulsmusic3@gmail.com Please provide your name, contact information and the voice part you sing. Singers can bring their own music or arrange to rent scores. Come prepared to perform; there will be no advance practice as a group. The deadline to register is April 27. Singers will receive information on excerpts being sung once they register. The fee to participate is $10, payable on arrival for the performance. Guest soloists for the event will be soprano Sally Dibblee and tenor David Steeves. The public is invited to attend. The hour-long program will start at 2:30 p.m. Admission for the performance is $15, payable at the door. A Night at the Pops features madrigal spoofs by parodist Peter Schickele (P.D.Q. REGIONAL AND NATIONAL NEWS CHOIRS FOR CHANGE ASSOCIATION: EAST- ERN HORIZON CHORAL COMPETITION Deadline for submissions: April 27, 2018 Competition Guidelines: This choral writing competition is exclusively for composers from marginalized identities, in an effort to seek social equity in today s contemporary choral environment. Entry into the competition is free, and shortlisted finalists will have their works performed and recorded by Eastern Horizon, a project-based, high-level choir. In the final performances, a first place and second place winner will be announced and awarded a monetary prize of $750 and $350 respectively (subject to funding availability). Submission Period: February 20 - April 27, 2018, noon AST Eligibility: To be eligible to enter in this competition, you must identify with a community that has been historically and/or traditionally marginalized by the structural injustices of society. A non-comprehensive list of these communities include: First Nations people, femme folk, women, people of colour, African Canadians, LGBTQ+ people, newcomers, people with disabilities, Acadians, and Métis. Applicants will be required to write a short personal statement addressing the intersections of their identity. Applicants of all skill levels and ages are encouraged to enter the competition. The competition was established by a generous private donor to encourage the creation of new choral music by Canadian composers and to honour the organization s history of engaging local and national composers. The competition is open to unpublished composers who are a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or landed immigrant. If a citizen, you are not required to be currently residing in Canada. There is no age restriction. The winner of the competition will receive: A cash prize of $2000 issued after the premiere performance. A premiere of the work presented at Christmas with the Bach Choir on December 2, Access to an archival recording of the premiere. Technological Features A mobile app is being developed for audience participation during the finale performance. Audiences will use their mobile phones as an instrument and participate in the sound making experience of the final mass piece, with all the choirs combined. Composer: Dr. Andrew Staniland of Memorial University (St. John s, NL). Overview Choral Canada is initiating a daring, expansive, innovative choral creation and performance experience to celebrate Canada s 150th anniversary and the significance of the choral arts in this country. This multidisciplinary and multi-dimensional choral music project will have a significant, lasting impact on Canadian choral communities and beyond. Key components include: - A commissioned multi-movement song-cycle by six Canadian composers for multiple voicings (5 individual ensembles - SSA, SSAA, SATB, TTBB, youth - and one massed ensemble) - Core stories from across our country that are expressive of our diverse identities and histories through water. Interdisciplinary connections of singing, music, theatre and technologies. - Multiple site-based, outdoor performances (6) interacting with space, landscapes, humanscapes, all relating and surrounding different water sources. With travelling, site-to-site audiences (groups of 100) culminating in a combined massed-performance event. - Contemporary and innovative choral presentation (singing, theatre, movement and sound, with the landscape integrated as an active participant) - A legacy piece in the form of a website that will re-create the experience anew for everyone. This site will include raw video footage, images, and audio recordings to offer a way to experience this project time and time again, for years to come. Artistic Team: The incredible vision of Jillian Keiley (Artistic Director) and Shawn Kerwin (Designer) culminate together in creating a visual and acoustic experience like no other. Jillian Keiley is an award-winning director from St. John s, NL and founder of Artistic Fraud of Newfoundland. Ms. Keiley assumed her role as the National Arts Center English Theatre Artistic Director in August 2012, and has had dozens of highly successful productions throughout her career. Shawn Kerwin studied theatre design in London, England, as well as attending several design schools in New York City. She is currently an Associate Professor of Stage Design at York University in Toronto, and has been nominated for the Toronto s Dora Awards a total of nine times, winning twice for Outstanding Design.
