2 Independence Orchestra Handbook Policies Required Materials Your instrument Black binder (provided by director) 3 Pencils (not pens) Uniform and Garment bag (property of IHS loaned to the student) Gentlemen must provide their own white tuxedo shirt Instrument supplies: o Rosin o Cleaning Cloth o Extra set of strings o Metronome/Tuner o Music stand for home practice o Rock stop for cello or bass players o Everest shoulder rest for violin or viola players Orchestra activity fee $90 All instruments should be kept in good playing condition at all times. Instruments must be a natural wood color (no green, pink, blue, etc. instruments will be permitted) Instruments Personal Instruments A quality program requires quality instruments. One advantage to owning an instrument of investment quality is that in contrast to starter instruments, which can depreciate in value, quality string instruments actually gain value as they age. If a purchase is needed, please talk to Mrs. Titus or your private instructor. We would be glad to make recommendations and consult with students and parents in order to avoid an inappropriate purchase. We would also like to help you obtain the best possible price for a good instrument. Please be aware that when buying a stringed instrument, you almost always get what you pay for. Please consult Mrs. Titus or your private lesson teacher before making a purchase especially if it is being done online. Playing an instrument of poor quality can be very frustrating for the student: the sound quality is poor, and it is hard for them to stay in tune among other things. All personal and school instruments are recommended to be insured by a homeowner s policy or property insurance. The school district will not assume liability for maintenance, repair or damage of personal instruments on school property. School Owned Instruments The school has a limited number of instruments for rent, and a financial aid application must be filled out and approved if a student wishes to rent an instrument from the school. The rental fee is $100 per school year. The student is responsible for the upkeep and care of the school issued instruments. This includes replacing strings, bow rehairs, etc. The student is responsible for maintenance and damage repair while the instrument is in his/her possession. Students are financially responsible for replacing any instrument that is lost, stolen, or destroyed. The instrument will be inspected at the end of the year for damage and the students must pay for any repairs.

3 Bassists and cellists who are using a school instrument at school are still responsible for having an instrument at home with which to practice. School instruments are loaned to these students for a fee of $50 for school use only. (See Fees and Dues for instrument usage fee.) Uniforms Ladies: You will be issued a concert dress provided by the school district. Shoes-black, closed-toe, dress shoes. Sneakers will not be allowed. Black undergarments (the neckline is wide on the dresses). Accessories o Small earrings o Other jewelry-watch, favorite ring. No necklaces or bracelets. (Too much jewelry hinders your playing and can be distracting visually and aurally.) o Please keep hair simple. No large hair ribbons, bows or gaudy accessories. Do not wear other clothes underneath your orchestra uniform. The dress will come to you freshly laundered. Please do not attempt to wash or iron the formals. See Fees and Dues for laundering fees. You are responsible for any minor alterations deemed necessary. No material is ever to be cut from the formals. Gentlemen: You will be issued a tuxedo (black pants and a black coat), a vest and a tie provided by the school district. Shoes-black dress shoes. Sneakers will not be allowed; this includes black athletic shoes. Black socks. Shirt-white tuxedo shirt (you will need to provide this). Can be found at Hobby Lobby. Accessories o No earrings or piercings o Hair should be neat The tuxedos will come to you freshly dry-cleaned. Please do not attempt to wash or iron the formals. See Fee and Dues for dry cleaning fees. **All uniforms and garment bags must be returned in the spring before school lets out for the summer. Students will be placed on the hold list until all orchestra items have been returned. Missing School Property Students will be using and wearing uniforms that belong to the school and Frisco ISD. If any of these items are lost, misplaced, or damaged, payment will be expected. Below is the price list of any missing items: Dress-$65.00 Jacket-$55.00 Pants-$24.00 Tie-$3.00 Vest-$22.00 Garment Bag-$29.00

4 Grading Policy Six weeks grades will be assessed in the following manner: Major Grades 50% Concerts Rehearsals outside of class Playing tests Projects Research papers Minor Grades 30% Sectionals Playing Quizzes Theory assignments Daily Grades 20% Participation (bringing instrument, work ethic) Preparedness (orchestra binder, pencil, etc.) Punctuality (turning in work on time) Participation (proper dress for concert) Extra Credit Extra credit may be used to replace a daily grade OR add 5 bonus points to a minor grade OR add 2 bonus points to a major grade In order to receive extra credit, students must attend a music or theatre performance. o Acceptable performances include, but are not limited to: school band or choir concerts, school theatre performances, DSO concerts, local music ensemble concerts, university student recitals, etc. o If students are unsure as to whether or not a certain concert or performance will receive extra credit, they should ask their director. o After attending the concert, students must bring their director the program from the performance along with a one page clearly-written or typed essay about the performance. o It is not acceptable for a student to get a program from a friend or family member of a performance that they did not attend. Knights show integrity! Wearing orchestra spirit shirt on the day of an orchestra concert will also earn extra credit. Attendance Requirements/Absences Participation at sectionals, rehearsals and performances is required and will be integrated into the student s grade which is in accordance with the TEA/UIL guidelines. An orchestra performs at its optimum level when all members are present. Orchestra is a co-curricular class that extends outside of the regular class day. Students orchestra grades are important, but equally important are the orchestra family members that depend on each member to do their part in order to achieve the best performance possible. This is truly a group effort! Therefore, all students are required to attend all rehearsals and performances unless excused by the director. A yearly calendar is given out at the beginning of the year. Dates will be changed and added and advanced notice will always be given to the students. Rehearsals will be announced as far in advance as possible. Good communication between students, director, parents and teachers will help. Organization is key to preventing last-minute conflicts. Read the following rules and contact the director with any questions.

5 1. All orchestra members are required to attend all concerts, rehearsals and sectionals during and outside of school hours. 2. All students are expected to be on time in their designated seat, ready to participate on the director s down-beat. To be early is to be on time, to be on time is to be late. 3. Rehearsals, concerts and sectionals will always be for a grade and points will be deducted if a student is late. 4. Prior notification is required for all non-emergency absences (at least 24 hours). The director must hear from the parent by phone or before the absence. The director s address and office phone number are on the front of this handbook. Please keep them handy. 5. Notification of an absence is not to be relayed from another student. 6. Please try not to schedule medical appointments during rehearsals, sectionals and concerts. If a student has a medical appointment that cannot be rescheduled, the student must give the director a doctor s note the next day. 7. In the case of a family illness or an emergency, parents should notify the director as soon as they are aware that such a situation exists. This is the only instance where absences will be excused the same day, or after the event. 8. Religious holidays or conflicts with religious beliefs are considered excused if the director is notified by the parents in advance of the conflict. 9. Orchestra is a UIL activity, so it takes precedence over non-uil activities except in extenuating circumstances. If there is a conflict with another UIL activity (band, football, etc.), the director of both activities must be notified in advance so that a compromise can be reached. 10. Students, do not assume that you are excused from orchestra commitments because you have practice/rehearsal/meeting for another activity. Failure to communicate will result in an unexcused absence. 11. Unexcused absences may result in the loss of chair in a student s section, moved to a lower orchestra, losing the opportunity to earn a letter jacket or having spring trip privileges revoked. 12. Other examples of unexcused absences: Forgetting instrument and/or music Forgetting about a rehearsal or performance Private lessons. Although lessons are a positive thing, they should be scheduled around school commitments. Homework (Please plan your time in advance so that you can take care of homework before or after rehearsals and performances. Good time-management is crucial to success!) Work. School comes first. Always. You have your orchestra calendar; it is up to the student to notify their boss when there is a conflict at school. 13. It is the students responsibility to ensure that all calendars have been checked for conflicts prior to the date of the event. Do not wait until the day of the concert, rehearsal, etc. to deal with conflicts!

6 Rehearsal and Daily Procedures The success of an orchestra program depends on its rehearsal techniques. How an orchestra rehearses depends on the conduct and cooperation of its members. The following guidelines to a successful rehearsal should be followed at all times. 1. Be on time to all rehearsals, concerts, etc. and performances. You are to be in your place, ready to participate on the director s down-beat. To be early is to be on time, to be on time is to be late. 2. Always have your instrument, music and a pencil for every rehearsal, class, and sectional. Disorganized or missing materials will result in a lowered grade. There will be binder checks. Students who do not bring their instruments and/or required materials will have points deducted from their participation grade. 3. Gum is not allowed at any rehearsal, concert, or sectional. 4. Cell phones are not allowed in class, at rehearsals or concerts. They should not be on your stand; they should be put away in your orchestra locker. You are always welcome to ask to use it. If the director sees your cell phone without permission (for any reason), it will be taken up and turned in to the front office. No exceptions! This will be strictly enforced. 5. Listen to the director. Talking while the director is conducting, rehearsing or giving instruction is not appropriate. 6. Stay involved in the rehearsal the entire time. Rehearsals are not for reading, drawing or doing homework. 7. Please help keep our facilities clean and orderly. Do not bring food, drinks, (or gum) into the orchestra room, IHS music facilities or on the stage. Sealed water bottles are okay in the orchestra room. 8. The orchestra room is for orchestra students only. There is a lot of expensive equipment stored in the orchestra room. Mrs. Titus knows you; Mrs. Titus does not know your friends. Please ask them to wait for you in the hallway. 9. Lock your lockers. All students will be issued an orchestra locker and a lock. Do not leave valuable items in your lockers. Orchestra lockers are only to be used for orchestra equipment-instruments, music, etc. 10. Take care of equipment. Students, YOU are responsible for your own items. Make sure that you put your instrument away after every rehearsal, concert, etc. 11. Do not play or tune other student s instruments. 12. Please do not lean or play on the music stands. They are for music only! 13. Remember that the success of the orchestra is your responsibility. Be active, be positive, be determined, be dependable and most of all-have FUN!!

7 Charms Charms is a program used to help keep track of instruments, uniforms, student payments, student/parent information, calendar, playing tests, etc. Make sure that your information has been updated and filled in. The director will be ing parents and students from Charms, using the addresses that have been entered in the program. Social Media Social media has become a part of our daily lives. We are never far from connecting with the outside world. Because of this, the Independence Orchestra is more public than ever. There are rules regarding online postings if a student is going to be in the Independence Orchestra: 1. IHS Orchestra members are not to post negative or offensive comments about the Independence Orchestra program, any other orchestra program, orchestra members, IHS faculty or administration for any reason. 2. IHS Orchestra members are not to post any pictures that may reflect badly on the IHS Orchestra. 3. Independence Orchestra members are not to reply to negative comments posted by others about the IHS Orchestra program. Failure to abide by these rules will result in disciplinary action including, but not limited to: parent notification, lowered orchestra placement, loss of chair within section, removal of officer duties, spring trip privileges revoked, and possible removal from the orchestra program. 8 Lettering Policy A student must be a member in good standing (good attendance, admirable work ethic, great attitude) A student must participate in all required orchestra activities designated by the director (sectionals, rehearsals, concerts, clinics, contests) unless the student is excused in advance. A student must have no citizenship grade lower than an S in orchestra A student must have two years of academically eligible participation in: o UIL Concert and Sight-Reading Contest o UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest *Students who are selected to and perform in the All-Region Orchestra (unless they are not able to perform in the clinic/concert for excused reasons) or earn a medal on a solo at UIL State Solo and Ensemble would only be required to have one year of participation in the events listed above. **Students who are selected to participate in the All-State Orchestra in the TMEA audition process will immediately earn a letter and become eligible to purchase a letter jacket in January. Parents/Booster Club The Independence Orchestra Booster Club is an integral part of the orchestra s growth. Parents will donate countless hours to figure out ways to raise money for the Independence Orchestra. They will volunteer to help out at concerts, receptions, contests; the list goes on and on. Students really enjoy all of the extra things that happen in orchestra. We go on trips, have parties, compete in contests, eat lots of food and so much more! We look forward to maintaining traditions! All of these extra things are not free. Students want to see the traditions thrive. They will carry on as long as we have parents to volunteer and help raise the necessary funds to do so. A small number of parents cannot continue to do all of the work for an orchestra this size. The booster club, the Independence Orchestra and the director need help from ALL parents. The orchestra s school accounts and budget only take care of a very small amount of the monetary needs of the Independence Orchestra. Fundraising and parent help is essential. Parent volunteers are needed in the following ways: Serving at concert receptions Helping to prepare/set up/serve at the Orchestra Banquet at the end of the year Spring Trip Chaperone Field Trip Chaperone Orchestra Party Chaperone Offering to pick up food or drinks for an orchestra function or party Being a member of the booster club board In order for this orchestra to run efficiently, ALL must contribute. The IHS Orchestra students deserve the best! Parents, you have wonderful children and they should get to experience every opportunity that the IHS Orchestra has to offer.

9 Private Lessons All students are encouraged to participate in Private Music Lessons, especially if they are in the Symphonic Orchestra or if they have aspirations of getting into the Symphonic Orchestra. There are qualified music teachers who will come to the school to teach lessons during the student s class period. These lessons are $18 for 22 minutes once per week. Mrs. Titus will help the students get in touch with a private teacher and after that all correspondence, scheduling, and payment will go directly through the private lesson teacher. This is their livelihood; it is imperative that the student notify their private lesson instructor at least 24 hours in advance if the student will not be in class on the day of your lesson (testing, sick, doctor, etc). Many teachers will still charge for a lesson if they have not been notified in advance. Spring Trip The orchestra will be taking a trip during the latter part of the spring semester. The trip is also a competition, so it is the director s expectation that all students attend the spring trip if at all possible. Spring trip is a privilege, not necessarily a right. It is intended to be a reward for a successful year. Students should exhibit 100% effort at all times during the school year musically and behaviorally. Any student who is consistently a behavior problem in class will not be allowed to go on the spring trip. Students must be academically eligible at the time of the trip. Students must keep up with payments. If a family decides that their child is not going on the trip, they can expect cancellation fees. (More information to come when the spring trip packet is distributed to students.) More information will be given out about the spring trip when the details have been finalized.

10 Fees and Dues Student Fee $90 (this pays for t-shirt, uniform cleaning, food, awards banquet, composite board, supplies, and concert recordings) Fee must be paid either by cash, check or money order and turned into the black box in the orchestra room (checks made payable to Independence Orchestra Booster Club or IOBC). Due August 25 th Students will receive their orchestra t-shirt once their student fee has been paid Instrument Fee $50 Fee o Instruments that are checked out for school use only o Instrument does not leave the school $100 Fee o Instruments that are checked out for school and home use o This must be accompanied by a Financial Aid Application Fees must be paid via MyPaymentsPlus The following fees are due at the time of the event: All Region Auditions Audition date: October 14, 2017 All students are strongly encouraged to audition, especially those students in the Symphonic Orchestra The fee is $10. This fee and audition contract are due September 22 nd. All State Auditions Recording Date: October 28, 2017 In order to qualify for all state taping, students must audition for the all region symphony orchestra The fee is $25. This fee is due on the day of recording. UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest Contest date: March 24, 2018 All students are strongly encouraged to perform a solo or perform in an ensemble, especially those students in the Symphonic Orchestra. If a student wishes to letter in orchestra, they must participate in the S&E contest for 2 years. (See Lettering Policy) Solo fee is $12.50 Ensemble fee is $12.50 for each member of the ensemble This fee is due on February 16 th. **Your solo/ensemble must meet certain UIL requirements. Please look at the Prescribed Music List (PML) online to make sure your solo meets UIL requirements. **Students will be required to purchase a copy of their solo music in order to participate in the competition unless a copy of their solo is available to borrow from the IHS Orchestra Music Library. **Most solos require an accompanist in order to be heard by a judge. The accompanist will determine the fee for the students. **Students who receive a I on a memorized Grade 1 solo at UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest will qualify to attend the Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest (TSSEC) in Austin on May

13 PRIVATE LESSONS The Independence HS Orchestra Department will be offering private string lessons to our students during the school day. Many outstanding teachers are available to teach at our school. The district personnel office, to ensure the safety of your child, has screened all private teachers. Lessons are available for all students. The lessons are $18.00 or $20 (depending on the teacher s qualifications) per 22 minutes, and are scheduled once per week. Students must make checks payable to the private teacher. Your private teacher will be contacting you with all the information about your child s lesson. Please respect your private instructor s time; if you are sick or know you will be absent the day of your lesson, please communicate with them directly about this. Private lessons are encouraged for all students in the Independence Orchestra especially those in the Symphonic Orchestra or those aspiring to be in the Symphonic Orchestra. Working one on one with a teacher will develop the student s playing technique and their musicianship. Private lessons provide individual coaching including reinforcement of concepts being learned in the classroom with individualized adjustments and opportunities to be coached on solo literature. Students are paired with a private lesson teacher based on availability and the order in which the students return this form (first come, first served).
