2 Appendixes The following lists of Indian students who attended Moor s Charity School and Dartmouth before the College recommitted itself to Indian education in 1970 are based on several previous compilations, supplemented and modified by research in the College archives, particularly the financial records for Moor s Charity School and the sspck. According to David McClure and Elijah Parish, 150 Indians attended Moor s Charity School during Eleazar Wheelock s lifetime.1 If that figure is accurate, many have been lost in the records or escaped notice and remain anonymous. Compiling a full and accurate count of the Native students, discovering exactly when they arrived and departed, and even, in some cases, knowing which school they were in at a particular time is difficult, and at this point perhaps almost impossible. In some cases, there may be no more than a brief record of an expense for an Indian student or a student who appears to be Indian in the financial records of Moor s Charity School. These lists are the most complete yet, but given the uncertainties in the records, they should not be regarded as definitive or final, or even, in some cases, completely accurate. 1. David McClure and Elijah Parish, Memoirs of the Rev. Eleazar Wheelock, D. D., Founder and President of Dartmouth College and Moor s Charity School; With a summary history of the College and School, to which are added copious extracts from Dr. Wheelock s Correspondence (Newburyport, Mass.: Edward Little and Co., 1811), 64.
