Harrison, Ph.D., President California State University, Northridge This season, more than any previous one, VPAC brings to Los Angeles artists from around the globe, artists who stand as proof that by shining a bright light on our differences, we affirm how much we have in common. Our new series, Music Knows No Borders, celebrates Cuba, Spain, Iraq, Mexico, Pakistan, and points beyond. VPAC s orchestra and chamber series, Soaring, includes a number of 20th century masterpieces by composers who immigrated to the United States to escape unrest in their motherlands. Our jazz series, Swinging, features several American artists who have undertaken an exploration of social justice issues closer to home. And Kathleen Battle, who has stood at the pinnacle of vocal artistry for twentyfive years, brings her new gospel-inspired concert, The Underground Railroad, from Lincoln Center to VPAC. Tony Award-winner, Billy Porter, brings his Broadway best to VPAC. And we celebrate another Broadway and musical giant, Leonard Bernstein, in three separate performances that honor his centenary year. 5 Onstage Sessions Chamber Music VPAC s intimate onstage experience transforms chamber music. Our perspective was the musician s perspective, wrote Mark Swed in the Los Angeles Times. We all heard the balances a little differently, depending on whom we sat nearest to, just like performers do. Immersive art is all the rage, and here for good reason. Each concert is followed by a reception with the artists. Kathleen Battle Underground Railroad: A Spiritual Journey Thu Mar 29 8PM $43 to $103 Academy of St Martin in the Fields Chamber Ensemble Korngold Sextet for Strings in D Major Shostakovich Prelude and Scherzo for String Octet, No. 11 Mendelssohn Octet for Strings in Eb Major, No. 10 Thu Oct 12 8PM $53 In the 1930s Erich W. Korngold escaped Austria for Los Angeles, becoming one of the most prolific film composers of his era. His early years in Europe shaped his destiny as one of the leading figures in modern music. The Academy of St Martin in the Fields Octet performs his 1916 Sextet. Eliot Fisk J.S. Bach Cello Suites Wed Dec 6 8PM $53 Fisk has boldly transcribed Bach s cello suites for classical guitar. Plucking and bowing share little in common, but the transformation is glorious. Danish String Quartet Bartok String Quartet No. 1 DSQ Nordic Folk Music Selections Beethoven String Quartet No. 7 and No. 1 Wed Feb 21 8PM $53 They call themselves modern Vikings. Everywhere they go, these four young firebrands are igniting the musical landscape. VPAC is proud to present its Los Angeles debut in a program that adds Nordic traditional music to Beethoven and Bartok. The prima donna made a triumphant return to the Metropolitan Opera last year, capped by five encores. Kathleen Battle s Underground Railroad: A Spiritual Journey chronicles the courageous quest for freedom by America s slaves. Battle draws from her own musical roots with this collection of spirituals, performed with a gospel choir. Following her sold out appearance at the Met, Battle reprises the program in Los Angeles, choosing VPAC for its renowned acoustics. wild Up at VPAC Kathleen Battle 6 VALLEY PERFORMING ARTS CENTER ValleyPerformingArtsCenter.org 7

6 Hecho en las Américas Music Knows No Borders Music is timeless. It unites across time and geography. It flows, permeates, and transcends Artists Featuring Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán Music by José Pepe Martínez Lyrics by José Pepe Martínez and Leonard Foglia Book by Leonard Foglia Commissioned by and Premiered at Houston Grand Opera Fri Feb 16 8PM Sat Feb 17 8PM Tackling a timely tale, these legendary Mexican artists combine their traditional music with high drama to depict the cross-border story of two families and three generations. The band s late Music Director José Pepe Martínez composed the opera, joining forces with writer Leonard Foglia to create a full-length mariachi opera that premiered in 2010 at Houston Grand Opera. Seven years later, its themes of human struggle are more relevant than ever. VPAC presents the West Coast premiere, following successful performances in Chicago and Paris. ile Special Guest Gaby Moreno Sat Nov 18 8PM $33 to $63 VPAC & Star Entertainment presents Fiesta Mexicana Feliz Navidad Sat Dec 9 7PM $38 to $78 Quetzal with Mariachi Flor de Toloache Sat May 5 8PM $33 to $53 Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán Rhythm is elemental, and melody is universal. Music does not discriminate. Some borders are ancient forged in mountains or carved by rivers. Other borders are manmade ephemeral, arbitrary, even disputed. But music knows no borders. Latin rhythms were born from African beats. Friday jazz descends from Sunday worship. The Russian shtetl and the Appalachian barn are not so distant. Radio call letters cannot entirely divide classical music from country. And even the most sacred music can be nondenominational. Music thrives in Los Angeles at the intersection of global cultures, at the crossroads of three continents, in the creative capital of the world. At Valley Performing Arts Center we give voice to the musical diasporas. This is our foremost value and the underpinning of our programming. VPAC is committed to an earnest nonpolitical idea the concert hall is an inclusive place. After all, ears know no borders. Hands clap and feet stomp regardless of nation-oforigin, religion, or cultural background. The communal joy of music and dance is immediate, intergenerational, and accessible. When water divides us, music compels us to build bridges. When mountains divide us, music guides us as we climb. When what separates us overshadows what we have in common, music inspires us to play louder, Flamenco Legends by Javier Limón: The Paco de Lucía Project Sat Nov 4 8PM $33 to $78 The Sachal Ensemble Song of Lahore Tue Nov 14 8PM $28 to $65 Intimate onstage experience ile Special Guest Gaby Moreno Sat Nov 18 8PM $33 to $63 Anat Cohen Tentet Musical Director, Oded Lev-Ari Thu Nov 30 8PM $33 to $78 Juan de Marcos and the Afro-Cuban All-Stars with Harold López-Nussa Trio Fri Jan 19 8PM $33 to $68 Leilah Broukhim Dejando Huellas (Traces) Sun Jan 21 7:30 PM $33 to $78 Step Afrika!
