The royal castle has stood here for 1,000 years, forming the centrepiece of this attractive town overlooking the River Thames. It s the largest occupied castle in the world and has been the family home to British kings and queens for all of that time. Ten monarchs are buried in St George s Chapel. In the magnificent State Apartments you ll find some of the finest works of art from the Royal Collection, including paintings by Rembrandt, Rubens and Canaletto. You can also see Queen Mary s Dolls House, created in the 1920s and filled with thousands of objects made by leading craftsmen, artists and designers of the time. The Old King s Head in Church Street is one of the oldest Inns in Windsor with bags of charm. Nell Gwynne, favourite mistress of Charles II, lived nearby in Burford House. There are cobbled streets and little alleyways to discover and beyond the historic core are many more interesting streets with fine examples of Georgian and Victorian architecture, particularly south of the Castle toward the Long Walk. You could take a guided tour in an open-top bus from outside the Castle. Get a ticket (it lasts all day) and you can get on and off the bus at several stops around the town. You might prefer to enjoy a relaxing river tour, or even an amphibian Duck Bus tour. It s all there in Windsor.
