The great hymns, anthems and songs of all peoples have come from days of national struggle. Our own wars have left us a rare heritage of music To-day the spirit of America at home as well as the spirits of our noble boys abroad is being sustained and inspired in the great task before us by our American music. - Columbia Records supplement, July 1918 When United States entered The Great War on April 6, 1917, the war had already been raging in Europe for almost four years. This concert endeavors to provide a musical journey through the war and specifically the vast output of American popular music that entertained both the troops in the trenches and the families back home. All of the music is
4 performed in the original published orchestrations from the time period, most of which have not been heard in a century. Armistice was declared on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in nineteen hundred and eighteen. This concert marks the centenary of this monumental occasion in world history and is dedicated to all of the veterans who have served to help keep our country free. The operetta Her Regiment opened at the Broadhurst Theatre in November 1917 and the action took place in France shortly before the war broke out in In 1917 Victor Herbert was the most beloved composer in the country (with such hit operettas as Naughty Marietta and Babes In Toyland) and while this show only ran 56 performances, it contains some of Herbert s masterful melodies. Keep The Homefires Burning (Till The Boys Come Home) inspired the British troops and became a slogan for the home front in Britain. America I Love You served as a treatise urging everyone, including the millions of immigrants from the homelands of the Central Powers, to join together as Americans. It s A Long, Long Way To Tipperary came to the U.S. as the zippy marching song of the British Expeditionary Force introducing the American public to that indefatigable and stereotypical British soldier, Tommy Atkins, created by Rudyard Kipling in his incredibly popular poetry. The British songs reflected the British concern for troops leaving England and going over into No Man s Land ; they had a beat and you could march to them; but they did not stir the spirit of Americans. Roses of Picardy is a British ballad commemorating the Picardy province of France that was the location of some of the fiercest fighting during the war. The sentiments of many people across the nation were embodied effective hymn of denial I Didn t Raise My Boy To Be A Soldier. Before the sinking of the Lusitania, Al Bryant s lyrics are the kernel of the movement that sustained Woodrow Wilson s secondterm peace without victory campaign. Oh Boy! & Have a Heart heralded a new era in musical comedy with integrated plots, songs and characters. The hit songs Till The Clouds Roll By and You Said Something swept the country. Victor Herbert rightly prophesied that composer Jerome Kern would be the heir to his mantle, something that Kern proved in the 1920s, particularly with the writing of Show Boat. Madelon or Quand Madelon as it is known in France, was that country s most memorable contribution to the music of the war. It reached the US with new English lyrics and joined the American war songs sung by the US soldiers. Pack Up Your Troubles in Your Own Kit Bag and Smile, Smile, Smile is another popular British marching song taken up by the American troops. The cheery nature of the song allowed soldiers for a few minutes to forget the grim realities of the war. I Don t Want To Get Well tells the story about a soldier who does not want to get better because he s fallen in love with his beautiful nurse. Singer and comedian Eddie Cantor popularized the humorous song. Till We Meet Again is a sentimental waltz which embodied the feelings of many soldiers who had to leave their sweethearts for over there. The song quickly became the largest sheet music seller of the time and composer Richard Whiting went on to write hit
5 songs including Aint We Got Fun and Hooray For Hollywood. Goodbye Broadway, Hello France! embodied the optimism of the American soldiers who were leaving to fight the foreign foe, along with going to pay our debt to France for sending General Lafayette to help American forces during the American Revolution. An ad on the sheet music declared Music Will Help Win The War. Smiles was the best-known hit for composer Lee S. Roberts. The song takes on a slightly bittersweet tone when put in the perspective of all the fighting forces serving away from their sweethearts and it became a massive hit during the war. U.S. Field Artillery March is one of many The March King John Philip Sousa wrote during the war. When the war broke out, Sousa, the most popular bandleader in the country at the time, disbanded his organization and volunteered to join the armed forces at age 62. After being rejected by both the Marines and Army, he was commissioned as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy and formed a 100-piece Jackie band that toured the country raising thousands of dollars for the war effort. In Hello Central, Give Me No Man s Land a young girl tries to call No Man s Land (the area between the trenches), where her father is serving. She asks aloud innocently why her mother weeps during her nightly prayers, and the listener prays the girl never finds out. Al Jolson popularized this heart-wrenching ballad. Oh Frenchy! tells the story of Rosie Green who enlisted as a nurse and was courted by a French soldier named Jean. While Rosie is at first cold to his advances, she melts whenever he speaks French to her. Composer Con Conrad later wrote Ma He s Making Eyes At Me and The Continental. Somewhere in France is the Lily puts the American flowers blooming beside the French lily and the English Rose in a garden that cannot help but flourish, where, of course, the sweethearts are the keepers of the garden. Composer Jos. E. Howard is best remembered for I Wonder Who s Kissing Her Now. K-K-K Katy was advertised as "The Sensational Stammering Song Success Sung by the Soldiers and Sailors. Written by Canadian-American composer Geoffrey O Hara it was quickly taken up by the troops. Indianola is a prime and melodious example of the ethnic stereotypes that were common in Tin Pan Alley during the 1910s. The song tells the story of Chief Bugaboo who is to marry his maiden and then go do his heap big bit and scalp old Kaiser Bill. Oh Johnny, Oh Johnny, Oh! was a huge song hit during World War One and again in 1939 when it was recorded by Bonnie Baker and The Andrews Sisters. Lyricist Ed Rose was inspired to write the song by Mr. and Mrs. John Hansen of Akron, Ohio who were so conspicuously in love while attending college (along with Rose) in Indiana. Oh How I Hate To Get Up In The Morning debuted in the all soldier revue Yip! Yip! Yaphank! which was written and performed by Private Irving Berlin. The lyrics reflect Berlin s own experience in training camp and displeasure at having to get up in the morning. Berlin revived the song during World War II for his second all soldier show This is the Army. While originally written as a 6/8 march, this original orchestration was arranged as a fox-trot for dancing. If He Can Fight Like He Can Love (Goodnight Germany) portrays the feminine grief of a young lady for her beau in a type of faintly off-color, vaguely naughty sentiment that
6 was probably real, but rarely voiced in polite society. The lyricist, Akron, Ohio native Grant Clarke, went onto write Ragtime Cowboy Joe and Am I Blue. How Ya Gonna Keep Em Down on the Farm (After They ve Seen Paree) musically asks the question of what to do with young men who left an insulated society as relatively naïve and returned having seen the world and experienced what it had to offer. Composer Walter Donaldson served in the Army during the war and later wrote Yes Sir, That s My Baby and Makin Whoopee. The possibility of illustrating such a colossal war of nations through means of their patriotic airs, symbolical as it were of their efforts and ideals in behalf of liberty and democracy, of presenting a musical history, so to say, of the entrance of each of the important belligerent powers into the war, offered tempting opportunities for arranger M.L. Lake, all of which have been successfully realized in the present Grand Selection of The Fighting Allies, a veritable paean of victory for the Allied Nations. Around it all is wrapped George M. Cohan s Over There. There is never any doubt of the purpose or the scope of this legendary piece of lyric. The entire country knew it, and it galvanized the troops, it is a fitting finale to this musical journey through The War to end all Wars.
