Chemical synapses allow neurons to form circuits within the central nervous system. They are crucial to the biological computations that underlie perception and thought. An electrochemical wave called an action potential travels along the axon of a neuron. When the wave reaches a synapse, it provokes release of a puff of neurotransmitter molecules, which bind to chemical receptor molecules located in the membrane of another neuron, on the opposite side of the synapse. 2

5 AXON s core When I started working for AXON back in 1994, it was what you would call a small, engineering-driven company. The relatively new SD-SDI stream was our main focus, and that proved to be a good choice. Now, with customers and major installations at key sites worldwide and over ten times as many employees a lot has changed. Fortunately a lot has stayed the same. We are still as enthusiastic, technology- conscious and quality-driven as we were back then it s in our genes. We call it AXON s DNA. Our future focus is to remain true to our heritage. What else can we do but strive to develop, design and build great products that help our customers to grow their business operations? Synapse has become a very powerful and mature system. With several hundred modules to choose from, controlled and maintained by probably the most powerful, and intuitive free software package available today called Cortex. 3rd party technologies have been modularized and included in our single form factor approach, like Dolby, Linear Acoustic and Civolution. The system is packed with new features again like our new Quad Speed audio ADD-ON bus, and we offer flexible upgrade paths all the way to 1080p helping you to protect your investment and lowering cost of ownership when standards evolve again. 6 Introduction Synapse is a modular system containing multiple 19 frames, active hot swappable cards and (mostly) passive connector panels. It is designed to support demanding mission critical applications in the broadcast industry. Although Synapse has a unique approach and is unequalled in its flexibility you could position the system in what the industry calls glue, infrastructure equipment, terminal gear or just modular equipment. 4

7 The system explained Synapse is unique and very flexible but its basic core and construction adheres to a simple design concept. A brief technical description of the basic elements and how they are constructed: The processing cards connect directly into the frame via a high density connector that powers the cards with a single voltage supplied by a hot swappable (dual redundant) power supply. The single rail of a relativity high 30V DC ensures stable operation and low supply currents that ensures high efficiency in the supply and its distribution rail. All voltages that are needed on the active modules, including +5V, +3.3V, +2.5V, +1.8V even 1.5V and +/-15V are derived from the main supply voltage with local switched mode regulators. These local regulators ensure stable, low noise, local supply high voltages and inter card isolation. The size of the Synapse card and the connector panel is the result of several design criteria that were defined in the original design. Today we are very happy that we have this fairly large PCB in order to maximize the processing power requested by modern broadcast infrastructures. Synapse frames offer more than just a housing that hold different processing modules. They are unique intelligent systems that form the foundation of extremely flexible building blocks. These building blocks (almost 300 different plug-in processing modules) range from simple functions like a distribution amplifier to cards that perform a massive array of functions in a single slot, previously only possible with multiple cascade cards. 5

8 Lowest cost of ownership and future proof Synapse has various unique features that ensure a good return on investment and many years of trouble free operation with the inherent versatility to adapt to changes in this constantly moving industry. Single form factor Moving cards between all frames, never restricted by variable frame dimensions, protecting your investment for future (re) use and ensuring compatibility with the total infrastructure. Single slot functions (single width I/O panels) with massive processing power This means dividing your card count by 18, 8, or 4 to calculate the amount of 4RU, 2RU or 1RU frames (going to press, there are just two exceptions in Synapse: Teranex based up/down/cross/standards conversion that due to its sheer power requirement takes up 2 slots = 34W and the long time delay cards which consists of one processing board and one board containing the solid state disks). Ethernet is part of the frame No loss of rack space if you need to connect the frames to your control, monitoring and setup network as the rack controller is a standard feature of the frame at no additional cost. Internal reference distribution amplifiers that do not take up an extra slot Offers savings in cabling and savings in space. The frames come with an integrated (dual) reference distribution amplifier. One connection to the frame and all cards are locked to a central reference. Fiber connectivity Beside a very high density (up to 144 channels in 4RU) 3Gb/s capable fiber range, Synapse also offers optional fiber I/O on virtually every module with SD, HD or 3Gb/s SDI I/O. Self contained cooling The 3 Synapse frames are self contained systems where the temperature housekeeping is an integral part of the frame. Unique architecture Internal passive daisy chain (Synapse bus) for enhanced inter-card data transfer such as 64 audio channels or 1080p video in SynView. Multiview is an integrated part of Synapse Synapse is the only modular system that has a fully integrated multiview system that can be mixed and matched with all other Synapse processing cards. Routing can be added in a Synapse based system SynCross is a modular routing system that is also fully compatible with Synapse. The GXP880 is the central part of the system and contains a 40x40 crosspoint module and local 8 x 8 I/O. Life time free upgrades Via you can download the latest feature and function upgrades for your cards free of charge. Free monitoring, control and setup with Cortex Cortex is the choice of software for broadcast monitoring, control and setup applications and free of charge in its advanced base form. 6

9 Single form factor Synapse is based on a single form factor. This is important as it will protect your investment and ensures inter frame swapping when systems change or the infrastructure is dynamic (as in OB-vans). All cards sold today can fit in a frame first sold in 2001, and every card sold from day one will fit in a frame sold today. This is protection of your investment and lowers cost of ownership when things change. Thanks to the front card rear connector panel construction Synapse can use different connectors between the front and the back. It is not limited to a single connector model and therefore the R&D team of Axon can make selections that best suit the performance needed. On page 8 you can see examples of 96-pin DIN41612 connectors, 4-coax+64 pin DIN41612, 8-coax and the recently introduced 90 degree angled PCIe connector. 10 The system allows for different I/O panels with different inter connectors between card and I/O panel. 11 Single slot functions and massive processing power Synapse puts more horsepower into a single slot then other vendors in this industry. Not only do you save on real-estate but also on power. The GED130 uses approximately 15 Watt compared to 40 Watt of its 6 card equivalent. This kind of integration empowers the system integrator or SI to look at his design with a different view. Comparing quotes on spreadsheet level is almost impossible and will not show the savings in cost, space and power (= cost of ownership). 13 The GXT110 combines a full stack of processing modules combined into one card. This second generation transmission modules (based on the extremely popular and still available HXT10) has the following functions: Dual input with back up function Two fully independent up/down/cross converters for two independent output standards and full functioning aspect ratio converters HD & SD 1080p & SD 1080p & 1080i 1080p & 720p 1080i & 720p 16 channel transparency of embedded audio with shuffle function for two independent audio mappings Two individual framesyncs Two independent color correctors Two independent AFD/WSS/VI inserters External audio processing and insertion via the normal or Quad Speed audio ADD-ON bus This example demonstrates that integration pays off. The combination of functions replaces a full set of conventional cards and due to tight integration they work much better together than is possible with individual functions. 14 Ethernet comes as a standard feature Synapse can be remote controlled via Axon Control Protocol (ACP), AXON s monitoring and control software Cortex talks this language natively but also many 3rd party vendors have written drivers for controlling these frames. The beauty of ACP is that it is a single driver protocol. Once you have interfaced to one card you can control any card old or new. Cross-over-cable Stand alone Network 12

15 The local control panel uses the same path as a remote control, hence contributing to the ease of use of the system. All card settings can be modified and maintained via an intuitive control panel. The menu is an easy to understand tree structure that facilitates safe and fast local control. 13

16 Internal reference distribution SFR18 SFR08 SFR04 Synapse is equiped with a (double) internal reference distribution system. The dual reference (single on the SFR04) feeds all cards with a connected external reference. The compatible signals are bi-level (Black and Burst), tri-level and wordclock. All Synapse HD and 3Gb/s products that can be locked to a reference can use either a bi-level (for ease of installation in a mixed SD/HD environment) or a tri-level sync. The reference distribution amplifiers are built around a redundant topology with dedicated power supply regulators. The bypass relay and reference circuit can be tested via remote control or front panel instruction. 14

17 Extensive fiber I/O Example of our high density fiber I/O module. Optical specifications are identical to the fiber properties. Example of our high density fiber CWDM module where with two of the passive connector panels you can achieve a 16 channel CWDM system (or bidirectional 8 channel system). This connector panel will fit in any Synapse frame but can also be mounted outside the frame. 15

18 Beside a very high density 8 channel Synapse card (144 fiber transmitters and/or receivers in 4RU) we also offer fiber I/O on virtually every SDI input and/or output. 20 Integrated cooling Synapse uses a single module form factor with 3 different frame sizes, each of which possesses self-contained cooling systems. The air flow is shown below. SFR04 The SFR04 has its air intake on the right side and outlets for the warm air on the left side of the chassis. The power-supply of the SFR04 also houses the fan unit for easy maintenance. SFR08 The SFR08 has its air intake on the right side and outlets for the warm air on the left side of the chassis. It features a front removable fan tray between the two groups of four cards. 22 SynLite: cost-effective solutions for straight forward systems SynLite Despite new capabilities and functionality, there will always be a class of applications where all these options and features could result in an over engineered solution. In these situations it would be preferable to have more basic, straightforward and easily affordable modules to meet the application s needs. To address that need, Axon has created SynLite - a series of modules for frame synchronizing, embedding, de-embedding, up- and down conversion. Based on the same robust and high quality design as the other Synapse modules, SynLite modules are ready for heavy-duty use. Importantly, SynLite modules come at a very attractive price. They are fully compatible with all Synapse and Cortex products and can be mixed and matched with all other modules from the Synapse range. 23 TWINS: smart double density modules Along with the advanced functionality of the existing Synapse modules, AXON extended the range by providing cards containing dual channel functionality. These cards within the Synapse range are named TWINS. 24 Internal passive daisy chain (Synapse bus) Synapse has a unique patented daisy chain mechanism that allows signals to flow from one card to the next (or back) without any wiring, connection PCB s or any mechanical switching. For audio we call this the Synapse ADD-ON system. It was originally developed for single direction audio transfers of up to 16 channels over 4 ADD-ON slots. In early 2010 we developed a new method that would allow 32 audio channel transfer in two directions simultaneously with up to 3 ADD-ON Cards. This bus technology is compatible with all the Synapse frames sold today and is called the Quad Speed audio ADD-ON bus. The Synapse bus is a collection of passive copper tracks running on the bus PCB from card slot to card slot. Thanks to its passive nature the system is extremely stable and reliable. The original method for embedding audio involved the cascading of modular products. In the example below you see how this is done. Audio I/O can now easily be added by placing an ADD-ON Card in the adjacent slot (to the right as seen from the front). 22

The Synapse method has several advantages: Less cables running from card to card J J = more reliable J J = less cost in labor and material J J = less cost in drawing, cable numbers and cable lists Less jitter due to the single processing stage Less cost in serial to parallel conversion and back (half in this example) When we developed this method in the early stage of Synapse the cost saving for SD SDI was substantial. Today we apply this method to HD-SDI and 3Gb/s SDI streams and the advantages are even more significant whilst the cost of the audio I/O ADD-ON Cards have not increased. Audio for SD is identical to audio in 3Gb/s as long as it stays in the analog or AES/EBU domain. Hardware for HD and 3Gb/s SDI equipment is definitely more expensive then for SD-SDI. So if you need less HD or 3Gb/s equipment you can create really major savings. So how do these cascaded arrows work? The arrows in the second example above are a physical part of the Synapse frame. They sit between every connector from slot 1 to 2, slot 2 to 3, slot 3 to 4, and so on. 23

The first and last slot only have a connection in one direction, so slot 1 can house a MASTER Card with ADD-ON to slot 2, 3, and 4. The last slot in a frame can house a standalone MASTER Card or an ADD-ON Card to previous slots. Can you use the ADD-ON bus in every position? Yes; you can use the ADD-ON in every slot as long as there is a vacant higher slot number in the frame to the right of a MASTER Card. Two MASTER Cards break the chain and you can re-start an ADD-ON system. So the ADD-ON principle works from left to right as seen from the front of the frame. An ADD-ON Card makes a connection between slots. It puts or derives its own audio onto or from the yellow pin It turns yellow into blue It turns blue into green It turns green into red Less jitter is introduced into the video signal due to the single processing stage And a MASTER Card breaks the chain. 30 The Quad Speed audio ADD-ON bus The internal audio ADD-ON bus needed an upgrade for some applications. There is a need for more channels (32 per video stream seem possible in the near future). The bus needs to be bidirectional, so this should accomodate all of the channels in a video stream i.e. 32 channels in and 32 channels out at the same time. The new interface needed to be compatible with all existing hardware (frames) and in the implementation of the MASTER Card, it occasionally needed to be backward compatible with the original ADD-ON bus as described above. Between the E-decoding and Dolby Digital Plus encoding we want to watermark the left, right and center channel of the decoded discrete 5.1 surround channels and watermark a PCM channel used as the narrative channel for audio description. 36 SynView multiview is 100% Synapse Synapse is also a platform for a very powerful, fast and flexible multiview system called SynView. SynView uses the same inter card connection system as described above in the ADD-ON structure. A passive inter card connection system that allows for combining multiview cards to form a multi input, multi output viewing system. SynView has major advantages over competing systems: Can be combined in any Synapse frame with any other Synapse card Fast boot time (average around 10 seconds) Linear cost over I/O in steps of 4 inputs Based on hardware, no single point of failure Every card will handle its local inputs, overlays like Tally, UMD and audio bars. This ensures linear processing power increases, with every additional card, avoiding sluggish control and handling 3 building blocks for SynView GMV220/HMV220 GIQ200/HIQ200 GMW100/HMW100 4x 3Gb/s SDI inputs, clock, tally, UMD 4 audio channels/input 3x 3Gb/s SDI inputs, and 1x DVI/VGA input 2x 3Gb/s SDI inputs, UMD, Tally, 16 audio and integrity probing For a full description please refer to the SynView catalog at 34

37 SynView allows for up to 72 inputs on a single screen, or just a single input as a full screen. The GMW100 has 2 inputs and can handle up to 16 audio bars per video input and has additional integrity probing. It will show freeze frame, audio clipping, audio silence. The system can handle multiple clocks, timers, Tally, UMD. 35

38 SynCross: up to 40x40 routing in a full Synapse compatible form factor SynCross is a Synapse based modular video routing system capable of switching 3Gb/s, HD and SD SDI signals, as well as compressed domain signals such as ASI/DVB and SSI/SMPTE-310. The SynCross routing system can occupy from 1 slot in a Synapse frame for a 8 input/ 8 output system upto 5 slots for a system with 40 inputs and outputs. It is very simple to expand a SynCross system up to 40 inputs and outputs, both in electrical or fiber or a mix between optical and electrical. This system can be controlled via Ethernet, Cortex Control Panels or Cortex. ACP and a RS422 port are available for control with automation systems. SynCross uses a special interconnection board that connects 2, 3, 4 or 5 connector panels. SynCross rear connector panel assembly with 5 slot interconnection forming a 40x40 3Gb/s SDI router. SynCross has major advantages over competing systems: Supports 3Gb/s, HD, SD SDI, ASI/DVB, composite (SD) and SSI/SMPTE-310 Possible to integrate into other Synapse applications 2 types of rear connector panels BPH25 contains 8 inputs and outputs and ethernet connection (Xpoint board) BPH26 contains 8 inputs and outputs and RS422 connection (I/O boards) Expandable system starting from 8x8 up to a 40x40 router System can run on two references, both SD and HD at the same time Option to bypass reclocking for SMPTE-310 (19.4Mb/s) purposes DIN1.0/2.3, HD-BNC and/or LC fiber connections 36

The system is very flexible and there are a lot of different configurations possible. In the table below you see some of the possibilities. 40 Life-time free firmware upgrades Synapse modules are hardware platforms that often run a version of firmware. As our industry evolves we can see new standards evolve and new functions and features find their way into infrastructure requirements. Let s take for example s2016, the HD version (and in some countries SD as well) of VI and WSS. This VANC based data was added to existing products after their introduction. Also subtitle carrige in OP47 and s2020 Dolby metadata were added to existing products, free of charge. Occasionally our customers find a bug, or a missing feature. These will be solved, added and the product is improved. The new firmware is placed on for anybody to use, even if the product is over a decade old. That is lower cost of ownership the Synapse way. Comes with Cortex: configuration, monitoring & control software Synapse comes with a configuration, control and monitoring software package. The AXON Cortex software application provides comprehensive configuration, monitoring and maintenance tools for Synapse. This Windows based application includes functionality that enables the user to remotely: Configure a complex system in a short time frame View, record and archive the system events and report these to the user using a hierarchical system status display Control devices using an intuitive graphical user interface Maintain the system over its lifetime The standard version of Cortex is available free of charge from the company website (downloadable from 38

42 Remote control options Next to PC based remote control, monitoring and setup there are also dedicated remote control options. A number of remote hardware panels have been designed to work with the Axon system giving customers the option of choosing the most appropriate control surface for a particular application. The panels connect to Cortex using an IP connection and use LCD buttons with a RGB backlight to allow a very flexible, dynamic and limitless interface. Multiple rows of text with Latin, Cyrillic, Arabic or Chinese fonts or icons can be shown on a single button giving no restrictions other than the resolution of the LCD as to what can be displayed to the user. Three LCD panels are available: 16, 32 or 48 LCD buttons in either a 1RU or 2RU form factor. In addition these panels have an incremental rotary dial which can be used in combination with the LCD buttons to allow intuitive control of one or more values such as audio gains and delays. Alternatively the dial could be used for scrolling through pages of sources/destinations. There s also two 1RU panels available with normal buttons. The panels are powered with an external AC-DC brick PSU unit. The rear of the panels have two lockable DC power inlets allowing for an optional redundant PSU in critical control applications. 43 SCP08 The SCP08 is a stand alone Synapse control panel that operates with the TCP/IP protocol Ethernet and can control 8 different parameters on one screen or more (up to a maximum of 64) screens. This means that the total amount of controllable parameters/status information displays is no less than 512. Using Cortex all settings and status monitoring configurations can be specified. The panel also has software to browse and select all the desired parameters of all the cards in all of the connected Synapse frames. Any parameter on any screen can be user-defined, in complete freedom. In other words, any parameter from each and every card within each networked frame can be selected. There is also a free ipad application that allows for complete control of the Synapse system, SynTouch. The application can be downloaded from the itunes app-store. ipad and itunes are registered trademarks of Apple Inc. 41
