3 Energy-efficient underwater lighting has immense potential for savings and opens up design options VitaLight POWER LED 2.0 underwater floodlights minimise operating costs and spare the resources As energy prices rise, many swimming pool operators are confronted by the challenge of operating public pools in a more energy-efficient, resource-friendly manner. That's especially true of the often costly underwater lighting in the pool area. Hugo Lahme GmbH, with their innovative POWER LED 2.0 product line, offers the VitaLight line of underwater floodlights to bring top quality, long service life and efficiency to this segment. With the new VitaLight POWER LED 2.0 floodlights, it's not only possible to create impressive atmosphere with lighting, but also reduce energy and maintenance costs effectively for the long term. More energy efficiency The performance of VitaLight POWER LED 2.0 floodlights is comparable to equivalent halogen floodlights, but they require only about 80 percent as much energy. Their purchase pays off after just a short time. And when you consider the longer lifetime of VitaLight POWER LED 2.0 underwater floodlights, an average of 50,000 hours without changing an illuminant, along with the significantly lower power consumption, it's easy to see the enormous savings potential of this technology. To determine the cost-effectiveness of its POWER LED underwater floodlights, Hugo Lahme have carried out a comparison calculation: They compared a 400 W halogen light, a 200 W halogen light, a 175 W halogen light and a 30 POWER LED 2.0 underwater floodlight in terms of cost of purchase and operating costs. The calculation is based on an operating lifetime of 2,880 hours and a calculated electricity price of 23 cents/kwh. This corresponds to 9-hour operation on 320 days of the year. The result: VitaLight POWER LED 2.0 underwater floodlights, despite their higher cost of purchase, amortise after only a little less than one and a half years. VitaLight POWER LED 2.0 floodlights score especially well in terms of operating costs, with an immense savings potential. In comparison: the operating costs of conventional floodlights came to 966 a year. The calculated amounts included power costs, the costs of the lamps and the costs of changing lamps. Added up over ten years, the total operating costs for POWER LEDs only came to about 544 for power, since LED floodlights require no changing during their entire lifetime. That's in contrast with up to 9,666 for 400 W halogen floodlights and about 6,720 for halogen floodlights at 200 W or 175 W. Since this comparison calculation is only based on a single floodlight, the great potential savings from using POWER LEDs becomes even more significant as that number is increased. Best lighting and ideal operating comfort The performance of VitaLight POWER LED 2.0 underwater floodlights is also attractive, at over 150 lumens/watt. Any pool geometry can be outstandingly and effectively lit. Depending on the equipment variant, VitaLight POWER LED 2.0 underwater floodlights are available with 30, 21, 15, 9 or 3 LEDs. In the floodlight insertion modules for underwater windows, there is also a 2 x 30 variant. There are LEDs for a wide variety of pool ambiance, in the colour temperatures of warm white (3000 K), daylight white (6000 K) and in RGB versions even other monochrome colours are available as special fabrications upon request. That lets the floodlights be perfectly adapted right from the start to the desired colour ambiance and any desired lighting situation. With the 5 or 10 m cables included in the delivery, VitaLight POWER LED underwater floodlights can also be installed or upgraded quickly and easy in any type of swimming pool. A particularly practical feature is that both monochrome and RGB floodlights in the 2.0 series are exclusively operated with 2-wire cables. 14 Potential savings in swimming pools with underwater lighting, thanks to LED technology About the history, fundamentals and features of a future-oriented technology Dipl.-Ing. Werner Markenstein, Hugo Lahme GmbH, Ennepetal The use of LEDs (short for: Light Emitting Diode) in swimming pools for the lighting of the water's surface or as object lighting outside the pool represents an energyefficient and low-maintenance alternative to the halogen floodlights that have conventionally been used much more often in public pools. Although LED technology was once only a niche solution for weakly lit displays, technological progress over the past few years have opened up numerous additional fields of use, including underwater lighting. But how has this technology developed in the past few years, and how does it actually work? What are lumens, lux, colour temperatures and all the other words one hears so often these days? This article should provide some answers for better understanding of LED technology, and especially show how swimming pool operators can now use an extremely energy- and light-efficient technology for the sustainable construction or the sustainable and future-oriented renovation of their pools. The history of LED technology in a nutshell Although the Englishman Henry Round discovered the physical effect of electroluminescence in 1907 and Russian Oleg Lossev did further research on it starting in 1927, the first red luminescence diode only reached the market at the start of the 1960s. This first early LED opened up the way to industrial fabrication and had a light efficiency at the time of 0.1 lumens/ watt (lm/w). It wasn't until the start of the 1970s that LEDs were also available on the market in the colours of green, yellow and orange. High-power LEDs with a significantly higher light efficiency established themselves on the market starting in At the request of an automobile manufacturer, the first blue LED was brought to market in 1992 and built into their automobiles. From that point on, the development of LEDs accelerated, because due to their higher light intensity there were more and more applications for the diodes. By 1997, white LEDs with an efficiency of 10 lm/w were already available on the market. These were further developed into the socalled POWER-LED, and by 2004 they had already reached an efficiency of 40 lm/w. In 2009, white POWER-LEDs in industrial series production had an efficiency of 100 to 120 lm/w. Under laboratory conditions, LEDs had already been tested that could reach a light efficiency of about 220 lm/w. It will in any case be interesting to observe the direction in which the technology of LEDs will continue to develop. 14 The fundamentals of light the basis for LED technology What is light? Light is an electromagnetic wave. That means that light has specific properties, such as its wavelength lambda (λ), frequency f and light speed c, or its amplitude (see Figure 1). Light is visible when the wavelength λ is between 380 nanometres (nm) and 780 nm. A nanometre is 10-9 m, which is about 70,000 thinner than a human hair. Light at 380 mm is perceived by the human eye as blue-violet and that at the other end of the visible light spectrum at 780 nm is perceived as red. Light with a wavelength longer than 780 nm is called infrared or IR light. If it has a wavelength of less than 380 nm, it is called ultraviolet or UV light (see Figure 2). Coloured or white? LED technology is based on additive colour mixing (see Figure 3). Starting from the basic colours of red, green and blue, there are also LEDs in the colours of yellow and orange. White light in LEDs is created either by the additive colour mixing of the three LED colours red, green and blue (the RGB colour space) or by the phosporisation of blue LEDs, which also yields a white light. Phosphorisation is the variant that is used more frequently and is also significantly brighter.

15 Making light colour measurable The colour of light describes the spectral composition of the light, and how it is perceived by the human eye. Each light colour is assigned to a corresponding colour temperature, and this is measured in Kelvins (K). Here, 1 Celsius (C) corresponds to 273 K. The colour temperature on the spectrum according to the Planck Radiation Law corresponds to the temperature of a radiating hot body. As temperatures rise, the light grows correspondingly bluer, or redder for lower temperatures. This is how it comes to be that the light of a glowing stove is perceived as red, the light of a candle yellow, the light of the sun white and the light of very hot stars blue. So we can say that higher Kelvin values of the colour temperature actually cause a colder because bluer perception in people, while lower Kelvin values seem warmer because they are redder. Too technical? The rest is converted to heat and must be correspondingly guided away or cooled. The light yield is then the measure of the effective conversion of electrical power into light. It is given in the units of lumens per watt (lm/w). Incandescent lamps achieve values between 10 and 15 lm/w, and halogen lamps 15 to 20 lm/w. For fluorescent lamps, the value is between 60 and 80 lm/w and monochrome LEDs today are between 100 and 160 lm/w. It is easy to see that modern LEDs offer advantages over other types of lamps in terms of both efficiency and light yield. To replace a 150 W halogen floodlight with LED floodlights, as a result, we can set up the following calculation: 150 W 20 lm/w x 150 W = 3000 lm Units of light? The luminous flux represents the light output radiated from a light source. This is measured in lumens (lm). The illumination intensity, on the other hand, is the measure of the luminous flux falling on a defined area. The unit lux (lx) is used for this purpose. One lux corresponds to one lumen per m² (1 lx = 1 lm/ m²). For example, sunshine at noon outdoors can reach an illumination intensity of 100,000 lx, while an office workstation has an approximate illumination intensity of 500 lx and a clear night with a full moon corresponds to an illumination intensity of approx. 0.2 lx. When we speak of the efficiency of a lamp, this means the ratio between the radiated optical power and the electrical power used. The efficiency Eta (η) of an incandescent bulb is about 3%. A diode only allows current to pass in one direction. The current flows through the LED chip fastened in the reflector dish. This consists of two layers, at the boundary of which an electron exchange occurs, causing the optical effect, in simplified terms (see Figures 5 and 6).

17 LED in the pool a technological comparison with halogens In public swimming pools today, two types of floodlights are generally used for underwater lighting: Halogen and LED underwater floodlights. 18 LED underwater floodlights have an advantageous energy balance sheet and impressively combine long life with low maintenance. For good underwater lighting, an illumination intensity of 300 to 500 lm/m² of water surface is required. "We are essentially an IT company, so we are very quick to respond and have great process reliability. We can use remote maintenance to intervene very quickly when something isn't working," explains Andrea Marcato, also Managing Director at AngelEye. That is, if a camera should fail, repair or a replacement can be provided as quickly as possible, since the problem can be detected and localised immediately. All records from the cameras are archived according to currently valid privacy regulations. 23 Point of view Hans-Joachim Wittwer on power supplies and ballast The all-important difference Any expert in conventional lighting systems who thinks they've also mastered LED lighting technology has often learned otherwise when modern, energyefficient LED floodlights didn't shine quite as brightly as the brochures promised. Wrong cable lenghts, reversed cable cross-sections and incorrect power supplies are a frequent reason why this highly praised lighting technology sometimes stays in the dark and our technicians are asked for help. A frequent cause is failure to follow the installation and operating instructions we take so much trouble to prepare, as well as an easily detected penny-pinching mentality that sometimes makes supply units eye cheaper competitive products. But be careful not just the performance specifications on the type plate are the decisive factor for well-lit pleasure. The type of power and the electronics specific to the LED lamps also make that allimportant difference. There are good reasons that we state in our documentation the important information that we can only provide a warranty for VitaLight LED floodlights in combination with VitaLight power supplies or ballast units. That doesn't reflect greed for sales figures instead, we've had so many negative experiences with third-party equipment that we simply have no choice. To ensure optimum performance in combination with long life expectancy of LED floodlights in the premium range, the current rating as well as the power supply voltage should be stabilised for electrical reasons. If this stability cannot be ensured, then current and voltage will rise in ongoing operation and the lifetime will rapidly grow shorter. So once more the urgent plea only to use complete lighting systems when you're working with LEDs. The premature failure of the power supply electronic is also inevitable when the power characteristics of the power supply are overloaded by too many LED lamps connected. Please follow the manufacturer's specifications to ensure the optimum layout of your VitaLight lighting systems. Never use cable extensions underwater, since we have yet to find a system that can guarantee e long-term waterproof connections.
