Pictured above is model 4698PR in the "Mastercraft Collection" of Philco television receivers for 1960, shown with its companion stereophonic-high fidelity console, model 1916PR. Philco's "Mastercraft Collection" model 4744 at right forms a natural room divider. The chassis is built within the table and Philco's 21-inch "SF" picture tube is mounted on top, swiveling 350 degrees for viewing from any angle. Controls are conveniently located in front. "MASTERCRAFT COLLECTION" SETS TREND A collection of magnificently styled fine furniture in both television receivers and stereophonic-high fidelity instruments is a trend-setting Philco feature for The "Mastercraft Collection" in television is a series of 21-inch receivers handsomely designed in solid woods and veneers and incorporating every popular styling from Contemporary to Provincial. Careful attention to detail and solid craftsmanship have created a line of truly fine furniture and all carry the tag of the Fine Hardwoods Association, certifying that the finest possible solid woods and veneers are used. Often television receivers are housed in bulky, unattractive cabinets that spoil the setting they should enhance. With the "Mastercraft Collection", the cabinet design has been developed with as much ingenuity and care as the engineering features, making possible some imaginative new advances in the art of television. Every model in Philco's "Mastercraft Collection" has pre-set fine tuning, which means that once set, the tuning control needs no re-adjustment. They have powerful chassis with "Perma-Circuit" panels, higher fidelity audio power systems with multiple speakers and built in UHF-VHF aerials.

lo w ic z "MISS AMERICA" MODELS Jo hn O ko feature Philco's telescopic "Pivot Tenna" which can be directed to any angle to pull in the strongest possible signal. An imaginative use of color is a highlight of this collection. In addition to receivers in charcoal blue and in gold cabinets, new shades of vermilion, beige and mahogany are used. The famous table model "Predicta" receiver, 4242, is continued unchanged in mahogany and blond cabinets. The eyecatching pedestal set, now named the "Continental", has a newly-designed base. Philco's popular slant back console, also introduced last year, is re-styled in a choice of mahogany, blond or walnut cabinets. io n of Traditionally, "Miss America" receivers by Philco set the standard for design and performance in the television field. Proud of this tradition, Philco for 1960 offers two basic 21-inch consoles in mahogany and blond and a 24-inch console in a choice of mahogany, blond or walnut. All have swivel cabinets and Philco's exclusive "wrap-around" sound systems, set off by unusual indented grilles. Model 3412GL in the "Predicta Decorator" series is shown above. Handsomely designed in gold cabinet, it features a built-in automatic clock which has a "Night Watch" switch to automatically turn the set on and off. PORTABLES ct In the portable television field, Philco's "Slender Seventeener" has come to mean top performance and top styling, with the result that the "Slender Seventeener" is the biggest selling portable on the market today. For 1960 Philco has added a brace of notable new colors, including tangerine, aqua, gold and brown. These are in addition to "Slender Seventeener" models in the popular leather-like stylings of black alligator, white alligator and natural brown leather. The exclusive "SF" picture tube is used in all models, plus Philco's telescopic "Pivot Tenna" aerial. "New Matic" remote control, which allows the viewer to change channels by simply squeezing a bulb, is available at no additional cost. Fr Am om bl th er e, P Co A lle ROOM-DIVIDER SETS USE FAMED "PREDICTA" MOTIF Last year Philco set the pace for the industry with the world's first separate screen television receiver. So successful was this radical departure in television design that Philco is continuing the trend with six 17-inch models in its "Predicta Decorator" series, plus popular stylings in the "Predicta" table model and pedestal receivers. The picture tube in these receivers swivels 350 degrees, making them perfect room dividers and ideal for any part of the home where viewers might be watching from two different angles. All "Predicta Decorator" models have compact 21-inch chassis with Philco's new "Perma-Circuit" panels for the ultimate in trouble-free, uniform circuitry. Sound is out front and primary controls are located on the front of the cabinet. These sets "DIRECTA" REMOTE CONTROL Wireless remote control from Philco is another new feature for The "Directa" is a palm-size unit which operates electrostatically, using two control buttons. Besides turning the set on and off and changing channels, it gives the user choice of two volume settings. 4 ' j\i\i\--

lo w ic z TOP ENGINEERING=TOP PERFORMANCE errors that are unavoidable in circuitry assembled by hand. All "Perma-Circuit" panels are checked for absolute perfection by an Electronic Continuity Inspector before they go into the radio or television chassis. Anything imperfect is rejected by this vigilant electronic "inspector". ko The "works" of a television set are seldom, if ever, seen by the customer; yet what goes on inside that cabinet is what gives the receiver its performance and reliability. Knowing this, Philco engineers have built a host of proven features into the works of the 1960 line. Terms like "Perma-Circuit", "SF" tube and "Magnetic Monitor" are the keys to some of the advanced engineering that helped produce the 1960 models. O THE "SF" TUBE WITH "MAGNETIC MONITOR" hn io n of Jo "PERMA-CIRCUIT" For maximum uniformity and performance, satellites, guided missiles and other electronic equipments use the same techniques in circuitry construction that Philco has developed for all its 1960 television and radio receivers. The Philco "Perma-Circuit" panels provide 100% uniformity of design and circuitry. They are rugged, practically trouble-free and precision sealed by a special process to keep out dust and humidity for hours of operation. In addition, it is possible to almost eliminate the Last year's precedent-setting "Predicta" separate screen receivers were made possible by Philco's development of the now famous "SF" picture tube, ghisoctatthap. the shortest picture tube ever developed. This year the "SF" tube has received an additional refinement the "Magnetic Monitor". In the makeup of a picture tube, it is the electron "gun" that projects the beams that paint the picture on the tube. In the process, stray magnetic forces are generated which would impair picture quality if they mixed with the electron beams. Previously, heavy shielding was used to keep these stray magnetic forces from mixing with the beams. With Philco's new "gun", a "Magnetic Monitor" absorbs and dispels the magnetic forces, eliminating the need for heavy shielding and bringing about much sharper picture quality. Fr Am om bl th er e, P Co A lle ct "IF STAGES" The "IF Stages" in a television set are the amplification circuits which reinforce the picture and sound signals, boosting them to a level where they can be best seen and heard. In every Philco television receiver for 1960, three IF stages are used, the number required to obtain the best possible picture with sufficient contrast, detail and sound under all signal conditions. All three stages are vital in attempting to obtain a good picture, particularly in areas where TV signals are weak, and all three are standard equipment in every Philco 1960 model. RANGE SWITCH The range switch is a regulating mechanism built into every Philco television receiver. Using this switch, the viewer can adjust the power on his set to match the incoming signal, applying more power to get a good picture from a weak signal or less power to keep a strong signal from overloading. The switch is located at the top rear of the set, within easy reach. Philco's "Perma-Circuit" panels used in all 1960 television and radio receivers provide 100% uniformity of design and circuitry, making possible hours of trouble-free operation. 5

lo w ic z O hn Jo n of Within a short space of time, a whole galaxy of terms has arisen to describe the reproduction of recorded sound. Among the most familiar of these are "stereophonic" and "high fidelity". In simplest terms, "stereophonic" refers to the location of sound; "high fidelity" to its quality. Philco for 1960 has developed a complete line of single cabinet instruments with unique engineering features designed to bring owners the best of both. One such is the new "Stereo-Phones" speaker system, combining Philco's push-pull electrostatic speaker for high frequencies and dynamic speaker for mid-range responses. The system is encased in two separate units which, in some models, can be used in the cabinet itself or removed to any part of the room to extend the range of stereophonic sound. This "StereoPhones" system represents a unique solution to the problem of obtaining full stereophonic and high fidelity effects in a limited space, providing sound reproduction with all the color and richness of each individual instrument. A number of Philco's 1960 models incorporate the "StereoPhones" system. This new sound system is incorporated into the most compact single cabinet stereophonic-high fidelity instruments in the industry, Philco's ko... ADVENTURES IN RECORDED SOUND io Stereophonic-high fidelity in a single cabinet instrument is shown above with this Early American model in Philco's H-1814 series. It has an 80-watt peak output amplifier, custom record changer and five speakers, including the exclusive "Stereo-Phones" speaker system. Fr Am om bl th er e, P Co A lle ct The Philco "Stereo-Phones" speaker system for middle and high frequencies is shown below with "Mastercraft Collection" stereophonic-high fidelity model 1916PR, a Provincial design in a provincial finish. Model H-1814 series, ideal for apartment living and for all homes where li mited space makes bulky two or three piece stereophonic equipment out of the question. This is an entirely new approach to music enjoyment, enabling the owner to have all the benefits of a complete stereophonic high fidelity system without space-consuming equipment. Models in this series have an 80-watt peak output amplifier, custom record changer and five speakers, including the "Stereo-Phones" system. The stylings include Early American, a distinctive Danish Modern and a striking Contemporary design. "MASTERCRAFT COLLECTION" Philco's emphasis upon fine furniture finds natural expression in the genuine hardwoods and hardwood veneers of its stereophonic-high fidelity consoles. Furniture stylings include Traditional, Colonial, Danish Modern, Contemporary, Provincial and Modern. One magnificently styled Provincial model, 1916PR, is a companion piece to Philco's 4698PR television receiver (see Page 3). This is "Phonorama IV" with six separate speakers, 6

..."STEREO-PHONES" IN SINGLE CABINETS including the "Stereo-Phones" system. Its amplifier has 100 watt peak output. Three storage cabinets are provided, one for records, another for the optional tuner and a third for the "Stereo-Phones" system. "STEREO-DORS" Again setting the pace for the industry, Philco in January 1959 presented its "Stereo-Dors" arrangement of doors on the sides of the cabinet which deflect sound from side speakers. This concept is continued in the 1960 line, with a number of models featuring these hinged side panels to separate the sound for stereophonic effects. The effect is much the same as that of the open lid of a grand piano reflecting sound from the strings as keys are struck. NEW TUNERS A deluxe AM-FM tuner available for stereophonic-high fidelity models has special circuitry for receiving simultaneous AM and FM simulcast A "Stereo-Phones" model in Philco's "Mastercraft Collection", model 1816 is handsomely styled in genuine hardwoods and has an 80-watt peak output amplifier, storage space for the "Stereo-Phones" system, for a drop-in tuner and for records. Philco's "Stereo-Dors" arrangement of hinged panels, or doors, on the sides of the instrument for stereophonic separation is shown left in model H stereophonic broadcasts. This is accomplished with a single tuner in a single cabinet. All consoles and consolette stereophonic-high fidelity phonographs, except 1616, can be fitted with a drop-in, plug-in-and-play tuner for reception of AM and FM radio. CONTOUR CONTROL A new tone control, called "Contour Control", is designed to raise the middle frequencies to give increased emphasis to voice and to brass instruments. It enables the owner to obtain a wider range of variations in the middle frequencies than can be obtained with conventional controls. Thus the owner himself can "brighten" a somewhat dead recording or even adjust to seemingly bring the singer "forward". A GOOD MIXER For Philco's 1960 line, a new and fully automatic record changer is used in four deluxe models. The changer will play all 45 and 33 1 /2 records automatically without need to adjust for the different sizes and speeds of the records. It also plays 75 rpm records intermixed and carries a 16 2 /3 speed position. The changer has a diamond needle for microgroove records and a synthetic sapphire for standard records. To prevent damage as records drop into place, the turntable stops until the record is changed.

STRIKING DESIGNS IN CLOCK RADIOS, PHONOGRAPHS ANNOUNCED FOR 1960 The versatile transistor has brought about important advances in the engineering and design of radio receivers. Not only are transistors extremely rugged and reliable, but their small size has led to exciting new concepts in radio design. Philco has taken full advantage of these assets in two striking transistor clock radios introduced for One cordless transistor clock radio embodies Philco's "Predicta" styling. The T-1000, it has two speakers and a clock mounted on top of the cabinet base. This is a six transistor model using two regular flashlight batteries for the radio and Advanced design in a "Predicta" transistor clock radio makes this model T-1000 a headliner in Philco's 1960 line. Twin speakers and powerful six-transistor chassis are used in this handsome gift radio, which can be mounted on a wall or used on a table. 8 one for the clock. Both speakers and clock tilt, with respect to the base, so that the T-1000 can be hung on a wall in addition to its flexibility as a bedside table set. Another "Predicta" transistor clock radio is handsomely styled like a woman's clutch purse. The model TC-47, it uses four transistors and operates on either four "AA" penlite batteries or four "AA" mercury cells. The TC-47 is available in white or natural leather. Four regular clock radios operating on 120 volt house current are part of Philco's 1960 line. One has the clock mounted on top of the cabinet, in the "Predicta" tradition, and since the clock swivels, it can be turned in any direction for easy viewing, independently of the radio. Colors featured in these clock radios include pink and black, aqua and ivory, flame, charcoal, blue and mahogany. In addition to the clock radios, six new table model radios for 1960 have been developed by Philco, one in a flat design particularly suited for use on a desk. PHONOGRAPHS Philco's exclusive "Stereo-Dors" arrangement of hinged doors on the sides of the cabinet is incorporated into two new portable phonographs. Models H-1416 and H-1410 feature this door arrangement, which focuses the sound for best stereophonic reproduction in the room. Three new phonographs have detachable speakers to give stereophonic effects. The speakers are mounted in the lid of the phonograph. One, Model H-1418, has a tuner jack which can be used to convert the phonograph into a radio phonograph. Space is provided in the cabinet for a Philco T-45 transistor radio and a special cord is provided for plugging into the tuner jack and into the private listening jack of the transistor radio. In this way, the T-45 acts as a tuner and the phonograph amplifier and speakers are used for sound.

TOP MAGAZINE EDITORS HEAR '60 STORY AT PRIVATE PREVIEW With its new television, radio, phonograph and stereophonic-high fidelity models, Philco has an important story to tell. The story is being told with a comprehensive publicity campaign designed to carry the news of 1960 across the country. Starting point for the over-all publicity effort was a confidential presentation to editors of the country's national monthly magazines, held April 29 in New York City. The presentation was confidential because Philco's national distributor convention was still over a month away; it was held in April because national monthly magazines work three to four months ahead in the preparation of their stories and hence an advance presentation means publicity timed to reach the public as the products are reaching the market. Three different suites in New York's Savoy Hilton Hotel were reserved for the meeting; one for the actual demonstration, one solely for product displays and one for the buffet luncheon served after the meeting. All three suites of rooms were used for displays of 1960 products. Special room settings were constructed in the meeting room, Le Salon Bleu, to display Philco's new television and stereophonic-high fidelity models to best advantage. Following the presentations by Armin E. Allen, vice president of electronic planning and Henry E. Bowes, vice president-marketing, editors were given ample time to tour the displays and ask questions of Philco personnel in attendance. They were given special sheets to list their photograph requests, as well as descriptions of the product locations and a comprehensive press kit covering the complete 1960 line, including news material and photographs. Because of the large number of magazine people attending, the meeting was split into two groups. One group visited product displays in the Presidential Suite while the other attended the presentation, then the order was reversed. Considerable enthusiasm greeted the unveiling of Philco's "Safari" transistorized portable television receiver, the first cordless, battery-operated receiver to reach the market. Mr. Bowes demonstrated the "Safari" and answered questions from the floor. The editors were able to examine the set at first-hand, and later saw it in a realistic beach setting, which had been specially constructed for the meeting. The undeniable newsworthiness of Philco's consumer electronics line for 1960 excited highly favorable reactions from the press at this advance meeting. Philco is conducting an all-out publicity program to capitalize on this New York head start and to further spread the word about Philco's new developments for Philco's advances in stereophonic-high fidelity instruments are demonstrated by Henry E. Bowes, vice president-marketing, before editors of America's national monthly magazines.

First battery operated television receiver to reach the market, Philco's "Safari" brings a new dimension to television enjoyment. The cordless transistorized set can be used anywhere there is a television signal in the air. 1 0 PHILCO PIONEERS FIRST TRANSISTORIZED The Company which last year pioneered the world's first separate screen television receiver has made history again this time with the first cordless, transistorized portable television receiver to reach the market. Called the "Safari", the strikingly-designed battery-operated set is a Philco exclusive. Only 16 5 /8" high, 8 3 /8" wide and 5 5 /8" deep, it weighs a mere 15 pounds with battery making it ideal for use at the seashore, on picnics, even in the family car. The picture on a "Safari" portable is approximately the same as that on a 14-inch picture tube, or 80 square inches of viewing area. This is true despite the fact that the receiver uses a tiny twoinch cathode ray picture tube. Through a unique lens system developed by Philco, the actual image on the picture tube is greatly magnified until it gives the effect of a much larger picture. One of the big stumbling blocks to the development of transistorized TV for enjoyment out of doors was the fact that the sun's glare made it almost impossible to see the picture. Philco designers and engineers solved this problem through the use of an ingenious front visor which protects the picture and, for the first time, makes possible glare-free reception no matter how bright the sunlight. The "Safari" portable utilizes 21 transistors produced by Philco on the world's most automated transistor production line. These are incorporated into a "Perma-Circuit" panel. A

PORTABLE TELEVISION SET special rechargeable dry cell battery, developed through the cooperation of the Everready Company, is used to power the set for four full hours of operation without recharging. To recharge, the set is simply plugged into a standard household electrical outlet, function switch turned to "charge" and set turned on. The battery can be recharged a minimum of 20 times, giving it an operating life of 80 hours or more. "Safari" sets may also be operated on standard AC house power, like any household appliance, by merely plugging them into an electrical outlet and turning the function switch to AC. Coupled with the advanced research and engineering which led to this new development is Philco's emphasis upon fine design features. The "Safari" is styled in rich top grain black or tan cowhide. To bring in the strongest possible television signal, a telescopic antenna is built into the top of the set, pivoting 360 degrees. Complete controls for picture adjustment and channel selection are provided and in addition, the "Safari" portable features a fine tuning control, three position range switch and a manual, "hours in use" dial for the battery. With the first transistorized portable receiver, Philco has added a whole new dimension to television enjoyment. For the first time, TV entertainment is not limited by the availability of electrical service. For instance, a "Safari" receiver travels to a picnic, or to a ballpark; can go along for the ride in a boat or accompany the passenger on a train trip. From summer vacations at the beach to "joy riding" in a private plane, the possibilities of television entertainment on the "Safari" receiver are almost limitless. 11 For a New Kind of Pleasure Drive At that Summer Picnic r 1 As "SAFARI" STEALS THE SHOW... 12 "TOTAL ACCESSIBILITY" MEANS FEWER SERVICE HEADACHES Philco has gone a long way toward eliminating some of the major servicing headaches by building performance and reliability into its electronic products. But with any product, service may sometime become necessary. Here is where the Philco feature of "total accessibility" comes into play. What "total accessibility" means is that approximately 96% of all service points on Philco's 1960 television receivers can be reached by simply removing the back of the set. Naturally, this means a much easier task for the serviceman and, since the receiver usually will not have to be taken to the repair shop, less expense for the customer. In addition, in all separate screen models, the chassis slides out the back of the set, easily accessible so that repairs can be quickly accomplished with less wear and tear on the part of the serviceman and the customer. Another important service feature is the "Perma-Circuit" panels used in all radio and television receivers. With this precisionsealed printed circuitry, every check point is identified in printing, right on the panel. All components and connecting circuitry are thus individually identified to conform to the engineering schematic for each model, so that the serviceman can quickly and accurately locate the problem. In practically every case, with these "Perma-Circuit" panels, the receiver can be serviced without removing the chassis. Still another important factor in Philco's service story for 1960 is the new interchangeable tuners used in all models. These cascode tuners can be replaced in the home without the need of special test equipment, another bonus feature for serviceman and owner alike. A serviceman's dream, the new Philco television models are built with an eye to "total accessibility." Practically all service points can be reached by merely removing the back of the set.
