6 Thorens The Phono Company History (1 / 4) 1883 Hermann Thorens founded the company in St. Croix, Switzerland, as a music box manufacturer 1889 Thorens produces the first cylinder phonograph 1906 Introduction on the market of the first horn gramophone for lateral-cut discs 1928 Release of the first electric motor drive 1940 Start of building an own professional record-cutting machine 1957 The TD 124 establishes worldwide quality standards of record players 5
