Overview The Metrobility Gigabit Line Protection and Restoration (LPR) technology in the redundant twister TM offers the resiliency of data link redundancy to ensure network integrity with no down time. This link duplication provides the nonstop networking capability essential for high priority traffic and mission-critical applications. The GigE redundant twister provides full redundant data paths for Gigabit Ethernet devices, as well as 1000Base copper-to-fiber migration. Each GigE redundant twister contains a MAIN port, a PRIMARY port and a ONDARY port. Redundancy is provided between the PRIMARY and ONDARY ports. The GigE redundant twister actively monitors the primary link and if it fails, automatically activates the secondary link without interruption to network operation. Every GigE redundant twister also features SONAR (Switch On No Activity Received). With SONAR enabled, the unit provides protection against loss of data activity in addition to link integrity. The GigE redundant twister offers the following features: Immediate switchover from the primary to the secondary port if the primary link fails. Full and half duplex support. Dynamic Recovery Mode (DRM) operation to ensure session integrity and increased uptime. Network Select Mode (NSM) operation to redirect and isolate traffic adding extra security. A maximum loss of 1-2 packets (measured with minimum packet size and minimum inter-packet gap) due to failover transition. Can be configured to return automatically to the primary port after the failure condition is resolved. Switch on no activity received (SONAR). Automatic or manually controlled switchover. Link Loss Carry Forward on the 2752-SS-01 and Copper Loss Carry Forward on the S-01 for troubleshooting remote network connections. 4 Overview

Installation Guide Follow the simple steps outlined in this section to install and start using your Metrobility GigE redundant twister. 1 Unpack the GigE redundant twister Check that the following components have been included: GigE redundant twister Power Supply Four (4) Rubber Feet Your order has been provided with the safest possible packaging, but shipping damage does occasionally occur. Inspect your order carefully for damage that may have occurred during shipment. If you discover any shipping damage, notify your carrier and follow their instructions for damage and claims. Be sure to save the original shipping carton if return or storage of the unit is necessary. 2 Choose an Appropriate Location The GigE redundant twister is intended for use in either office or industrial environments. The unit must be located within six (6) feet of the AC power source being used and placed as far away as possible from electrical noise generating equipment such as copiers, electrostatic printers and other motorized equipment. If exposed twisted-pair wiring is used nearby, the wiring should be routed as far away as possible from power cords and data cables to minimize interference. The unit may be oriented in any manner which enables the physical connection to the power source and leaves a minimum of six (6) inches of space for proper ventilation. 6 Installation Guide

3 Set the DIP Switches A set of DIP switches is located on the back panel. These switches allow you to select from several modes of operation. Refer to the table on the following pages for the proper setting of the DIP switches. The default settings are shown below. 10 5 Connect to the Network A total of three connections must be made on the front panel when connecting the GigE redundant twister to the network. The MAIN port provides connectivity to the local networking system. The PRIMARY and ONDARY ports provide protected connectivity to a remote system. Connect to the MAIN port. Connect to the PRIMARY port. Connect to the ONDARY port. SW 1000 BASE 2752 RESET PRI MAIN PWR Twisted-Pair Interface The and S-01 redundant twister units provide one shielded RJ-45 jack for the MAIN port connection. It supports a maximum segment length of 100 meters over Category 5 shielded twisted-pair (STP) cable. The provides two additional RJ-45 jack for the PRIMARY and ONDARY port connections. Both ports support a maximum segment length of 100 meters over Category 5 STP cable. Fiber Optic Interface The S-01 and 2752-SS-01 redundant twister units provide two or three fiber optic ports, respectively. Each fiber port provides a set of LC or SC connectors. For maximum flexibility in designing or expanding your network, these fiber ports support any combination of the following SFP transceivers. 10 Installation Guide

The maximum distance and fiber type supported by each SFP optic is as follows: SFP Part # Distance Fiber Type O211-M m...multimode O km...singlemode O km...singlemode O km...singlemode O km...singlemode O211-1A km...singlemode O xx km...singlemode (BWDM) O xx km...singlemode (CWDM) IMPORTANT: The distances noted are for reference purposes only. The most important factor to achieve the desired distance is the optical power budget. Metrobility specifications indicate the typical transmit power budget. The actual distance is a function of the fiber type and quality, the number and quality of splices, the type and quality of connectors, the transmission loss, and other physical characteristics. When making fiber optic connections, be sure the transmit (TX) optical conductor on the GigE redundant twister connects to the receive (RX) optical conductor of the connected device, and that the transmit (TX) optical conductor of the device connects to the receive (RX) optical conductor of the redundant twister. For information on replacing the SFP transceiver, refer to Changing the SFP Transceiver. BWDM Interface The bidirectional wavelength division multiplexed (BWDM) transceiver provides a singlemode SC connector. The O xx supports a maximum segment length of 10 km. BWDM transceivers must always be used in complementary pairs. That is, the O must be connected to the O The O transmits data at a wavelength of 1310 nm and receives at 1490 nm. Correspondingly, the O transmits at 1490 nm and receives at 1310 nm. Metrobility GigE redundant twister 11

6 Apply Power Power is provided to the GigE redundant twister from the universal desktop power supply module. The power module is equipped with an S760 hollow-type plug and a standard IEC 320-type AC power receptacle. IMPORTANT: When making power connections, connect the DC power cord to the DC input jack located on the back panel before making the connection to the outlet. Failure to do this properly can damage the product and void the unit s warranty. The GigE redundant twister does not have a power switch. After connecting the unit to the AC power source, verify that the power (PWR) LED is lit. A steady green light indicates the unit is receiving power. TM DC INPUT/5VDC SONR TX AUTO O 5 6 N RED Upon receiving power, the GigE redundant twister goes into normal operation mode and automatically provides the appropriate signal conversion between the connected network segments. Use the individual link () LEDs on the front panel to verify correct segment connectivity. The LEDs will be lit if the following conditions are met: Power is being applied to the unit. There is an active device connected to the other end of the cable, and it is sending idle link signals. All connections are secure and the cables are undamaged. Both ends of the cable are set to the same auto-negotiation state. To maximize device compatibility, the redundant twister is designed with auto-negotiation enabled on its copper ports and disabled on its fiber ports. If necessary, disable auto-negotiation and set full duplex on the fiber port of the remote device to establish link. 12 Installation Guide

User Guide This section contains more detailed user information regarding the operating features of the GigE redundant twister. LED Operation All LEDs are located on the front panel. These include SW, PWR,, and LEDs. There are separate and LEDs for each of the three ports (MAIN, PRIMARY and ONDARY). The status and indication of each LED is described in the table below. 14 Reset Push Button A small RESET push button is located on the front panel of the GigE redundant twister. When used with the unit s SW (switchover) and (secondary) LEDs and the AUTO DIP switch setting, the push button allows you to effectively maintain or troubleshoot a PRIMARY link connection. Due to its small size and recessed placement within the front panel, the RESET button should be pressed with the tip of a pointed object. Pushing and holding the RESET push button has no effect. It is the act of pressing the push button that causes a reset. In the event of a PRIMARY link failure, pressing the RESET push button has the following effects: The active port automatically reverts to PRI- MARY when the PRIMARY link is reestablished. Pressing the RESET switch clears the SW LED. Condition The AUTO switch is UP and the RED switch is UP. The AUTO switch is DOWN and the RED switch is UP. Result The active port does not automatically revert to PRIMARY when the PRIMARY link is reestablished. Pressing the RESET switch clears both the SW and LEDs and forces the PRI- MARY port to be the active port. If the - ONDARY link is disabled, it will revert to PRIMARY if the PRIMARY has a good link. If there is only a ONDARY link, then the SW and LEDs will remain lit and pressing the RESET switch will have no effect. The RED switch is DOWN. The unit operates in Network Select Mode (NSM). The RESET push button toggles the active link between the PRIMARY and OND- ARY ports. Note that the SW LED remains off during NSM operation. 14 User Guide

Link Loss Carry Forward (LLCF) The fiber-to-fiber GigE redundant twister (2752-SS-01) has been designed with LLCF functionality to aid in troubleshooting a remote connection. When LLCF is enabled * and the 2752-SS-01 redundant twister stops receiving link signals on a port, this stops the transmission of link signals on the other port of the unit. For example, if LLCF is enabled and two 2752-SS-01 redundant twister units are connected at the PRIMARY port through a cable with nothing else connected to them, their Link LEDs will not be lit. When a valid link is established by connecting to the MAIN port, a complete connection is accomplished. The diagram below shows a typical network configuration using 2752-SS-01 redundant twister units for remote connectivity: Management Station Switch/Hub w/snmp 2752-SS-01 "redundant twister" 2752-SS-01 "redundant twister" Switch/Hub w/snmp Management Station Fiber Cable LED lit = established link LED unlit = no link If the fiber connection breaks, or the device fails, the 2752-SS-01 redundant twister carries that link loss all the way to the switch/hub which generates a trap to the management station. The administrator can then look at the redundant twister to determine the source of the loss. Management Station Switch/Hub w/snmp 2752-SS-01 "redundant twister" 2752-SS-01 "redundant twister" Switch/Hub w/snmp Management Station Broken Fiber Cable LED lit = established link Link Loss Carried LED unlit = no link IMPORTANT: When connecting a 2752-SS-01 GigE redundant twister to a port that supports auto-negotiation, it is strongly recommended to set both port settings to the same speed and duplex mode. This allows the GigE redundant twister to receive link pulses and select the active port. * The unit is shipped with the LLCF disabled. Metrobility GigE redundant twister 15

Copper Loss Carry Forward (CLCF) The copper-to-fiber GigE redundant twister (2752-1S-01) incorporates CLCF for identifying a lost copper connection. When CLCF is enabled, the fiber port s transmitter will shut down if the copper port stops receiving link pulses. The copper port, however, continually transmits link signals regardless of whether or not the fiber port receives link signals. The diagram below shows a typical network configuration with good link status using two GigE redundant twister units for remote connectivity. Note that CLCF is enabled as indicated. 17 Switch On No Activity Received (SONAR) The GigE redundant twister is designed to protect a network from failure that would prevent data from reaching its destination. With SONAR enabled, the redundant twister monitors the active port for loss of data activity, as well as loss of valid link signals. SONAR enables the unit to automatically change the active port to its backup when the following two conditions occur: No data activity is detected on the active port for two (2) seconds. Data activity is detected on the backup port. To switch active ports, the backup port must have data activity within the two-second time out period when the active port lost activity. If both ports have no activity, the port that receives data activity first becomes the active port. The active port is switched immediately if it loses its link and the backup port has a link. To properly activate SONAR, make sure that the following switches are enabled: 1. RED switch. This sets the redundant twister to operate in Dynamic Recovery Mode. 2. LINK switch. This allows link signals to be sent out both ports. (Not applicable to the ) 3. SONAR switch. The settings of the other DIP switches do not affect SONAR operation. However, SONAR will override the Auto Restore Primary Circuit (AUTO) switch. If both SONAR and AUTO are enabled, the active port will not automatically revert to PRIMARY (after switching to ONDARY) if PRIMARY has link but no activity. Data activity on PRIMARY must also be detected during the two-second time out period before the active port reverts back to PRIMARY. NOTE: The unit is shipped with SONAR disabled. 18 Single Strand Fiber Failover Protection To ensure network resiliency in the event a single strand of fiber cable breaks or fails, the S and 2752-SS (Rev B or higher for both models) provide failover protection by automatically forcing both ports to switch from Primary to Secondary. This maintains the continuous flow of data in both directions. Scenario The diagram below shows two 2752s connected together at the Primary and Secondary ports. All ports have good link status, and both units are operating in full-duplex mode with the Primary ports active. "redundant twister" A 2752 PRI MAIN = LED on = LED off MAIN PRI "redundant twister" B 2752 Problem The fiber strand carrying data from redundant twister B to A breaks, thus stopping the flow of data from B to A. "redundant twister" A 2752 PRI MAIN PRI MAIN "redundant twister" B User Guide

Solution To implement single-strand failover protection, enable the following DIP switches: RED, LINK AUTO, TX, and SONAR on each unit. The 2752s automatically perform the following operations to restore data activity. redundant twister A switches its active port from Primary to Secondary. redundant twister A stops transmitting data and link pulses through the Primary port. redundant twister B switches its active port from Primary to Secondary. Bi-directional traffic is now restored. active port switches to Secondary 2752 "redundant twister" A PRI MAIN no data, no link "redundant twister" B MAIN PRI active port switches to Secondary 2752 redundant twister A restarts transmitting link pulses on the Primary port. Result All data communications continue in both directions with the Secondary port active on both units. Revert to Primary The 2752s will revert to having the Primary port active if the following conditions are met: Both units receive valid link pulses on the Primary port. Both units detect data on the Primary port. Alternate Solution If you do not want bidirectional traffic resumed through the Secondary port when a single strand of fiber breaks, do NOT enable the four switches (RED, LINK, AUTO, and TX) at the same time on both units. This results in the transfer of data from B to A, but not from A to B. Metrobility GigE redundant twister 19

Back-to-Back Application A typical application of the GigE redundant twister is to use them in pairs to extend a network s reach between two remote devices. In the back-to-back setup, both PRIMARY ports are linked to each other and both ONDARY ports are linked as shown in the figure below. Server Cluster A Server Cluster B GigE "redundant twister" GigE "redundant twister" Main Links Primary Links Secondary Links In a back-to-back application, make sure that the following switches are enabled on both GigE redundant twister units: 1. RED switch. Sets the GigE redundant twister to operate in Dynamic Recovery Mode. In this mode, the ONDARY port automatically becomes the active port if the PRIMARY link is lost and the ONDARY link is present. 2. TX switch. Allows the GigE redundant twister to transmit data on both the PRIMARY and ONDARY ports simultaneously. The units must have this switch enabled because they cannot determine which port is active on the other GigE redundant twister. 3. LINK switch. This allows link pulses to be sent out both the PRIMARY and ONDARY ports. If neither ONDARY port is transmitting link pulses and one of the PRIMARY ports loses link, a switchover will NOT occur. A switchover will occur only if the ONDARY port has link. (LINK is not applicable to ) 20 User Guide

Changing the SFP Transceiver Depending on the model, the GigE redundant twister supports two or three replaceable small form-factor pluggable (SFP) transceivers. Metrobility SFP components are hot-swappable and can be changed without disrupting traffic on the other ports. This section explains how to remove and install SFP transceivers into the GigE redundant twister. IMPORTANT: Use only Metrobility-supplied SFP transceivers with this product. Installing any other part can damage the unit and will void the product s warranty. 1. Disconnect the fiber optic network cables, if they are installed, from both the transmitter (TX) and receiver (RX) ports on the SFP transceiver. WARNING: Avoid looking into the laser or cable. 2. To remove the SFP transceiver from redundant twister, simply pull open the release mechanism (i.e., plastic tab, bail latch, etc.) and slide the module out of the slot, as shown below, left BASE "redundant twister" 1000 BASE "redundant twister" SW RESET SW RESET PRI MAIN PWR PRI MAIN PWR TX RX RELEASE MECHANISM BWDM SFP CIRCUIT BOARD THE BOTTOM 3.
