2 A Commitment To Quality & Innovation Draper has been manufacturing projection screens for over 50 years. We began with a sturdy fiberglass base matt white surface, made in the midwestern United States, and we still offer screens made with this viewing surface today. Over the years, we have grown and added many new surfaces to meet different needs. Today, Draper offers over 30 surface options, including flexible and self-supporting fabrics, and surfaces for front and rear projection, with different gain, contrast, and color options. Draper has made a major investment in building a state of the art testing lab for viewing surfaces and other products. We have broadened our range of viewing surfaces to include a full spectrum of gain options, from 0.6 through 3.2. We now offer three distinct types of acoustically transparent materials. Our viewing surfaces have new names and useful codes to help everyone identify their qualities and characteristics at a glance. We have prepared detailed technical documents outlining the results of the many tests we perform on every viewing surface. Today Draper s offering of viewing surfaces is unparalleled in the industry...and there is more to come. Expertise and Training Draper has long been known for its knowledgeable AV staff. Steve Cook is a key member of our team of experts. Steve has spent over 30 years in the AV industry building relationships with system integration dealers and AV design consultants in support of their large and special vertical market projects. Steve acts as Draper liaison to the industry on projection/screen technology. He supports AV design consultants, collects input and ideas for product development from consultant partners, and oversees Draper s AV training programs. Steve works with consultants and their customers nationwide, addressing even the most complex projects. AV s Best Screen Selection Tools Steve Cook, National AV Consultant Manager Draper has developed the most effective and useful Projection Planner in the AV industry. Try it and see how simple it is to choose a screen with the perfect viewing surface and size for your room, lighting, and projector. The Projection Planner uses InfoComm s ANSI 3M-2011 PISCR standard (Projected Image System Contrast Ratio) to optimize a projection system to the user s needs. Register for access at the Draper Pro Portal, Projection Planner: (registration required) Simplified Screen Surface Selector: Mobile Toolkit Draper s mobile toolkit includes searchable document libraries for all AV products, assembly map tools for our popular StageScreen and FocalPoint screens, and our handy mobile Screen Surface Selector. 3 Viewing Surface Families Draper makes selecting the perfect viewing surface easier by dividing our viewing surfaces into families. These families subdivide our viewing surfaces, based on characteristics indicative of where and how the screen will be used, to ensure you get the very best screen surface for your needs. Draper s standard viewing surfaces are divided into four distinct families: OptiView (Self-supporting Surfaces), OptiFlex (Tensioned Surfaces), ClearSound (Acoustically Transparent Surfaces), and CineFlex (Rear Projection Tensioned Surfaces). What s In A Name? Once you have decided which viewing surface family is right for your needs, the next step is to choose a specific fabric. Draper has spent a lot of time reviewing and improving our viewing surface descriptions to better highlight each surface s properties, characteristics and benefits. We want to be sure that the surface you choose will offer exceptional performance not only in your setting but also for your specific viewing needs. You will notice that individual surface names start with two or three descriptive words and end with a simple alphanumeric code. Former viewing surface names for existing surfaces are shown after their new names for your convenience. The alphanumeric code after each surface name provides additional information about the surface s viewing cone, contrast, gain* and other helpful information. A sample viewing surface is displayed below with tags showing the meaning behind each part of the code. Full Viewing Surface Name:: ReAct MS1000V Isolated Code Sections: M S 1000 V Viewing Cone Contrast Gain* Family Viewing Cone X: Extra-wide. Half gain is greater than 60 degrees. M: Moderate. Half gain is degrees. C: Controlled. Half gain is less than 30 degrees. Contrast T: Typical. Surfaces with typical contrast are white in color and are generally recommended for use where ambient light is controlled. H: High. Surfaces with high contrast usually have a grey surface or substrate. Their black retention is enhanced and they perform well under reasonable levels of ambient light. S: Superior. This designation is reserved for surfaces with remarkable contrast and resistance to ambient light. Our Superior surfaces will meet or exceed the contrast offered by any competitive viewing surface. Gain* The numeric portion of the name is its typical peak gain x Gain levels of surfaces cover the full range from 0.6 to 3.2, and minor variations may occur between samples. Lower gain surfaces offer excellent uniformity across wide viewing cones, for excellent edge blending and consistent reproduction with short throw projectors. Higher gain surfaces offer a more brilliant display in a variety of settings. Family Some viewing surface codes include an E or V suffix after the gain number. E: Indicates a self-supporting viewing surface that is part of the OptiView family and/or suitable for Draper Series E non-tensioned screen models. V: Indicates the surface is part of our OptiFlex family of tensioned surfaces and/or suitable for Draper Series V and other tensioned screen models. TecVision Engineered Screen Technology At Draper we never stop innovating! In addition to the four families of viewing surfaces shown in this brochure we also have a premium line of viewing surfaces called TecVision. All eight TecVision surfaces are ISF Certified for color accuracy by the Imaging Science Foundation. TecVision is available on Draper tab tensioned and permanently tensioned screens. These eight formulations are designed to optimize contrast ratio and color fidelity in a broad range of settings and at a variety of light levels. Five white surfaces are available with gains ranging from 1.0 to 1.8 across remarkably wide viewing cones. Three grey surfaces offer excellent performance under higher room light levels. TecVision surfaces are produced per order. Formulae and finished products are checked and rechecked to meet rigorous quality standards. For more information visit TecVision.htm 3
4 Screen Selection Important Considerations Draper s priority when assisting customers with screen surface selection is to match the screen surface to the application for the best possible performance and picture quality. In order to do this there are a number of important considerations that should be taken into account. Any information a customer can provide about their needs, based on these considerations, gives our sales staff vital clues that help ensure picture quality meets or exceeds expectations. Draper offers the most comprehensive collection of viewing surfaces in the industry but when you call we re only concerned about one, the one that s best for your unique needs. Projection System Use and Content Knowing what a projection system (projector and screen) will be used for is an important first step toward deciding on a screen size and contrast level needed to properly display content. The more data, small fonts and HD video to be displayed the larger and higher contrast the screen will need to be. Proper Screen Size The AV industry has developed some general guidelines for what is considered proper screen size. These guidelines are based on expectations of the content to be viewed most often on a given projection system and in a given space. Presentation/Large Graphics System is used for presentations without much copy, large fonts, or simple graphics and artwork not requiring close scrutiny. In this case image height should be approximately one sixth the distance to the farthest viewer. Mixed Content System is used for a variety of content that is a fairly even mix of both presentation/large graphics and critical viewing/hd. In this case image height should be approximately one fifth the distance to the farthest viewer or greater. Critical Viewing/HD System is frequently used for high definition full motion video and/or detailed documents requiring critical decision making. In this case image height should be approximately one fourth the distance to the farthest viewer or greater. Screen Brightness There are several factors that help determine whether a screen provides adequate brightness for a given setting. Screen brightness (light coming from the screen surface) is measured in foot lamberts. Screen Size While a very large screen can be immersive it is important to remember that the higher the square footage of a viewing area the more projector light is required to fill it properly. Projector brightness can be a large part of the cost equation when selecting components for a projection system. Screen Gain Choosing the best screen gain (surface brightness) for an application is very important. Higher gain materials can help increase brightness but can also adversely affect viewing cone, cause hot spotting or have other negative effects. Vast improvements in projector brightness have reduced the need to use very high gain (1.5+) materials in most circumstances. Room Lighting Sources of natural and artificial light in the same room as a projection system, measured in foot candles, get into viewers eyes and compete with the light from the projector. It is important that projection lighting is the brightest light source in the room. Measuring the foot candles of light at likely audience points of view helps to determine how many foot lamberts of light are needed from the viewing surface. Ambient light can be measured using an incident light meter. Projector Brightness Projector brightness is measured in lumens. It is important that projector brightness (lumen output) results in more light coming from the viewing surface (foot lamberts) than from the ambient light (foot candles) level present where viewers are seated. Typical Ambient Light Levels At The Viewer Theatre/Screening Room Less than 1 foot candle Auditorium foot candles Board Room/Training Room foot candles Video Conferencing Room 50+ foot candles At The Screen Optimum Light Level Less than 5 foot candles Good Light Level 5-6 foot candles Marginal Light Level 7-8 foot candles Excessive Light Level 9+ foot candles
5 Throw Distance It is important to know the throw distance (distance between projector and screen) when choosing a viewing surface. This distance will also help determine the type of lens needed for the projector and the best level of gain (reflectivity) for the viewing surface. More reflective surfaces require a longer throw distance. When the projector is located too near the screen, hot spotting may occur. Off Axis Viewing It is important to know the arrangement of the seating for viewing projected content. Wider seating typically requires materials with a broader viewing cone. Typically the half gain angle represents the last position where an audience seat should be located. Draper offers numerous viewing surfaces that are well suited for wide audience viewing areas. Draper offers numerous surfaces with excellent diffusion where gain is well maintained from any angle. Contrast Ratio As mentioned before content helps determine screen size. Data, small fonts and HD content facilitate the need for larger screen sizes. In addition, content also dictates when higher contrast is needed. Without adequate contrast (widest possible range between darkest blacks and brightest whites) details and edges begin to be lost, greatly compromising picture quality. Room Lighting Projectors cannot project black. Black on a viewing surface is created by the absence of light. For this reason it is critical to control light levels in the room. It is even more important to reduce the light level at the screen. Doing so will vastly increase the contrast and legibility of details and text. Screen Tint One way to improve contrast is to use a grey screen. Grey screens have more black in the tint helping to improve black levels and absorb stray light. Some grey screens are also reflective and can help steer off axis ambient light away from viewers. Light grey diffusive screens help increase contrast as long as ambient light in the room is well controlled to moderate. In higher ambient light conditions a darker grey viewing surface like Draper s ReAct MS1000V, which features superior angular reflectivity and ambient light blocking, may be required. System Brightness Another way to increase contrast ratio is to increase brightness in the system. The problem with this method is that it can only improve or brighten the whites in the image, it does nothing to deepen or improve the blacks. It is possible to make an image too bright for the room lighting, as well as causing bright areas of the image to begin to bleed into adjacent dark areas. 6 OptiView Self-supporting Surfaces OptiView surfaces are all self-supporting and do not require tensioning to perform well. These surfaces are generally installed on motorized or manual roller screens with a dowel below the screen surface. Most surfaces in this group have a tearproof fiberglass textile base. OptiView surfaces are very sturdy and suitable for use in a variety of settings. Call Draper for support with your 3D application. Matt White XT1000E Extra Wide Viewing Cone / Typical Contrast / On-Axis Gain of 1.0 The standard to which all other screen surfaces are compared. Preferred viewing surface in educational and commercial markets. A matt white surface diffuses projected light in all directions, so the image can be seen from any angle.
