6 Task LCD - Display Attention: Please remember that for controlling the train, there is to use a fixed format. The format use one byte: 0D0CSSSS. The last four bits are reserved for the speed (S), Bit 5 is for the light (C) and Bit 6 is for the direction (D).!Notice: the speed code 0001 is reserved for the emergency stop! That can t be used for the encoding the speed levels! For a better controlling: Please use a varibale named "DCC_train_value" with this fixed format. (show this value on the serial Monitor) - 6 -

7 Task LCD - Display In this Task, the controller inputs have to be displayed on a LCD display. The circuit is to be designed, build and tested. The programming is divided into sub-tasks. A project report includes the following points: - Project planning (work packages, scheduling, division of labor) - Complete concepts (circuit designs, simulations, calculations, flow charts) - Logging of practical work including also the measurement protocols. - Review and discussion of results - 7 -

8 Rules for the development First draw the circuit Program the Arduino before you connect the inputs and outputs! If you have different power supplies connect the different GNDs if necessary Connect and test the circuit on the solderless board before you connect it to the Arduino Connect the power supplies when the circuit is complete and tested - 8 -

9 LCD Task I: Output LCD: The 8x2 LCD display has to be operated in 4-bit mode. Make a simple issue and enter the default train ID 01 on the display.! Notice: There are many LCD-examples for the Arduino (Hello World)! Display: T I D

10 LCD Task I: Output LCD: Use the Eprom from the Arduino. Read the train ID from the Eprom address 0 and displayed the train ID.! Notice: There are many examples for the Arduino! Display: T I D

11 LCD Task 2: Potentiometer Potentiometer: The potentiometer should be used as a speed controller for the train. There are 14 speed levels that can be set for both directions. Turn right the train moves forward and turn left backward. About one 8x2 LCD display the speed levels and the direction to be output. Note: For the emergency stop, the speed level 1 is reserved! Calculate and measure the speed levels and enter them in a table. It is to be presented for both directions. Display: S P E E D 1 4 F

12 LCD Task 3: Button/switch Light button: The green button is to be used for lighting control. If the light is off and the button is pressed, the light should be turned on. At press again, the light turns off. This information is to be output on a 8x2 LCD display. Display: L i g h t O F F

13 LCD Task 3: Button/switch Kill switch/emergency stop: The red button is to be used as an kill switch. The train has to immediately stop, when the emergency stop is pressed. If it is press again the emergency is lifted and clear the LCD Display Display: E R R O R E - S T O P

14 LCD Task 4: change train-id Train ID switch: The switch must be turned to change the train ID. In this mode, change the functions of the two buttons (green and red) and the potentiometer. The potentiometer is counting the Train ID. The allowable range for the train ID is 01 to 99. Display: P R O G R A M T I D :

15 LCD Task 4: change train-id Train ID switch: The train ID is to be stored on the Eprom with the adress 0, if the green is pressed The saving of the train ID is displayed on the LCD display with an S for 5 seconds and then the S will be deleted after that. It is the train ID, the speed and the light can be displayed in sequence. Change the input from the potentiometer and/or the light switch should be displayed, when the display information is on.
