1 HPV TECHNOLOGIES, Inc Fitch Irvine, California MAD A-Series...Flat Panel Surface Planar Arrays...Concert Sound at it s Finest! Flat Panel Surface Planar Arrays describe a new speaker technology that utilizes a full-range, high- Q planar magnetic driver in the construction of very high performance speaker arrays. Planar speaker technology has been esteemed for many year for its superior sonic clarity and absolute fidelity particularly in high-end, esoteric home systems. Now HPV Technologies s proprietary MAD-1 transducer has brought planar s extraordinary sonic performance to professional audio with the powerful Surface Planar Array family of speakers. Surface Planar Arrays are built around the MAD-1 transducer, a true push-pull planar driver with exceptional sensitivity and power handling capacity. Planar arrays are assembled with modules each having multiple MAD drivers fixed into an aircraft-grade alloy frame. The frame is curved horizontally to create the desired coverage with horizontal patterns of 60, 90, and 120 currently available. Each frame has a vertical pattern of 10 (± 5 ) that can be adjusted in 2.5 increments. Arrays are created by pinning together the required number of modules (aka ribs ) that will result in the desired vertical coverage and SPL. Typical configurations start with 8 ribs that allow the vertical dispersion to be adjusted from 5 up to 80. However larger arrays can be assembled with up to 24 ribs to take advantage of increased SPL output and the exceptional long-throw capabilities inherent in the operation of the planar drivers. The structural frame that connects modules together allow ribs with different horizontal patterns to be assembled into the same array thereby allowing near, mid, and far-throw coverage to originate from the same acoustic point. The versatility of surface planar arrays are evident with the excellent coverage achievable from both ground stacked and flown configurations. Coverage is virtually seamless between individual rows in both the horizontal and vertical fields regardless of the physical placement of the array. And the drivers sum together so efficiently without cancellation that the entire array becomes a huge radiating surface with perfect signal alignment, precise coverage control, and exceptional clarity and musical detail.
2 MAD A-Series Surface Planar Arrays The MAD A-Series of Surface Array planar magnetic speakers have redefined a new standard in concert audio. Utilizing the extraordinary MAD-1 planar transducer, the A-8, A-9, and A-12 systems create a sonic field that reveals the most subtle musical details, exceptional imaging, and stellar clarity in ways that have to be heard to be fully appreciated. Gone are the limitation of early planar speakers that were too big, too power hungry, and too inefficient for large scale professional performances. The technology in MAD's planar transducers has overcome all of the inherent limitations of former planar systems and has created new performance standards that exceeds anything possible in today's conventional line array designs. So what makes the MAD systems so exceptional? The answer lies in the MAD-1 planar transducer. First, this driver is a full range device that operates from ~100 Hz to 18 khz. This means that no crossover points are needed in any of the critical vocal and musical bandpass. No crossovers also mean there are no phase shift and signal alignment issues or changes in the tonal response as the sound passes through the different types of drivers. All of these issues (i.e. phase shift, signal alignment, and tonal shift) occur in varying degrees in all conventional systems and degrades the sonic performance. Digital signal processing (DSP) in MAD arrays only requires a Hz. high-pass filter (dictated by the program material and the size of the array) and some simple equalization. Subwoof loudspeakers can be added to any array to extended low frequency performance. Second, the MAD-1 transducer creates a plain wave rather than a conical wave...that's the type which emanates from conventional cone and compression drivers. In simple terms, a plain wave is highly directional, radiating away from the transducer in a narrow, two-dimensional beam. This allows the dispersion pattern of any array to have precise control in both horizontal and vertical directions. Additionally, all A-Series arrays can create asymmetrical coverage patterns by simply masking off individual drivers in any row of the array. This function become especially useful when it is necessary to keep the acoustical energy from a few drivers from reflecting off a nearby wall or ceiling segment. Third, when planar transducers are positioned next to each other, their combined acoustical energy sums together perfectly without any comb filtering resulting in a very smooth and uniform dispersion in both the horizontal and vertical fields. And when multiple rows are stacked into taller arrays, this acoustical summing extends down in frequency...resulting in full-range performance from ~ Hz to 18 khz. The low frequency response of planar arrays is determined by the number of speakers in the array. For more details on planar performance, go to In concert venues where more low frequency output is required, HPV provides two solutions to extend the array s low frequency performance with the SB-412C cardioid bass cabinets and the VFL horn-loaded subwoofs. When the SB-412C bass cabinets are positioned next to the arrays, they will increase the system s overall SPL and extend the low frequency down to ~50-60 Hz. When sub-bass performance is needed down to ~25-30 Hz, the MAD VFL-Series subwoof speakers can be incorporated as ground stacks. 3 MAD A-Series Specifications General Description: The A-Series consist of 3 model; the A-8 (60 H), A-9 (90 H), and A-12 (120 H). Each of these speaker modules can be configured for ground stacked or flown planar arrays. All of the modules incorporate MAD-1 fullrange planar transducers mounted into a curved aircraft-grade, alloy frame (aka rib ) which establishes the horizontal coverage angle. The frame also contains all rigging points and adjustment cams allowing each rib to be vertically splayed from 0 to 10. All three module types can be assembled into the same array. The array s SPL output and coverage patterns are determined by the number and type of ribs in the array. Actual output is subject to environmental and atmospheric conditions and may vary from the published specifications. The following chart indicates specifications for a single planar rib.
