Precautions On safety Should any solid object or liquid fall into the cabinet, unplug the receier and hae it checked by qualified personnel before operating it any further. On power sources Before operating the receier, check that the operating oltage is identical with your local power supply. The operating oltage is indicated on the nameplate at the rear of the receier. The receier is not disconnected from the AC power source as long as it is connected to the wall outlet, een if the receier itself has been turned off. If you are not going to use the receier for a long time, be sure to disconnect the receier from the wall outlet. To disconnect the AC power cord, grasp the plug itself; neer pull the cord. One blade of the plug is wider than the other for the purpose of safety and will fit into the wall outlet only one way. If you are unable to insert the plug fully into the outlet, contact your dealer. Should the AC power cord need to be changed, hae it done at a qualified serice shop only. On placement Place the receier in a location with adequate entilation to preent heat buildup and prolong the life of the receier. Do not place the receier near heat sources, or in a place subject to direct sunlight, excessie dust or mechanical shock. Do not place anything on top of the cabinet that might block the entilation holes and cause malfunctions. On operation Before connecting other components, be sure to turn off and unplug the receier. On cleaning Clean the cabinet, panel and controls with a soft cloth slightly moistened with a mild detergent solution. Do not use any type of abrasie pad, scouring powder or solent such as alcohol or benzine. If you hae any question or problem concerning your receier, please consult your nearest Sony dealer.

3 About This Manual The instructions in this manual are for model ST-DA80ES. In this manual, the USA and Canadian ST-DA80ES is used for illustration purposes unless stated othewise. Any difference in operation is clearly indicated in the text, for example, USA and Canadian models only. Conentions The instructions in this manual describe the controls on the receier. Follow the hookup procedures for the components that you want to connect to the receier on the pages specified. To learn the locations and names of each jacks, see ear Panel Descriptions on page 35. Inserting batteries into the remote Insert two size AA (6) batteries with the and on the battery compartment. When using the remote, point it at the remote sensor g on the receier. Do not use a new battery with an old one. Do not expose the remote sensor to direct sunlight or lighting apparatuses. Doing so may cause a malfunction. If you don t use the remote for an extended period of time, remoe the batteries to aoid possible damage from battery leakage and corrosion. Video game Before you get started Turntable Audio Component Hookups (6) Turn off the power to all components before making any connections. Do not connect the AC power cords until all of the connections are completed. Be sure to make connections firmly to aoid hum and noise. When connecting an audio/ideo cable, be sure to match the color-coded pins to the appropriate jacks on the components: Yellow (ideo) to Yellow; White (left, audio) to White; and ed (right, audio) to ed. 4

For VIDEO 2, the changer command mode must be 2 and the changer must be connected to the VIDEO 2 jacks on the receier. If the disc or track memo contains a character that the receier cannot display,. appears for that character. When the Mega Control function of the player is actie, the operating status of the main player is displayed. Speaker System Hookups Oeriew This section describes how to connect your speakers to the receier. Although front (left and right) speakers are required, center and rear speakers are optional. Adding center and rear speakers will enhance the surround effects. Connecting an actie woofer will increase bass response. Be sure to match the speaker cord to the appropriate terminal on the components: to and to. If the cords are reersed, the sound will be distorted and will lack bass. The center speaker, howeer, may be moed closer, but not beyond the straight line connecting the two front speakers (B). The rear speakers may also be closer to listening position than the front speakers (C), to suit the configuration of your room. If the surround effect is still inadequate, adjust the CENTE DEAY and EA DEAY parameters (see page 21). Note If you use front speakers with low maximum power input, adjust the olume carefully to aoid excessie output on the speakers Notes Do not place the center or rear speakers farther away from the listening position than the front speakers. When mounting the rear speakers on side walls perpendicular to the listening position they should be placed cm aboe the listening position. Depending on the shape of your room (etc.), you may wish to place the rear speakers behind you instead of on the side walls. One adantage of this placement is that you can use a pair of large floor standing speakers matching your front speakers. Check the instruction manual of your speakers if you re not sure of the impedance. (This information is usually printed on a label on the back of the speaker.) The signals output from the PE jacks are identical to those output from the speaker terminals of the receier. You can then connect any pair of speakers (e.g., the front speakers) to the amplifier s speaker terminals. Video cable (not supplied) (1 for a monitor) Yellow Yellow z If you want to watch high quality ideo images You can use an S-VIDEO cable for the /DBS, D, VIDEO 1/2/3, and MONITO jacks. Note The signal input from the S VIDEO jack is not output to the normal VIDEO jack. Nor is the signal input from the VIDEO jack output to the S VIDEO jack. Warning regarding the playback of / sources When playing / sources through the receier, do not play a / that contains digital recordings made from a player whose digital output was set to DOBY DIGITA. High olume will be output which may damage the receier and your speakers. eceier D AC-3 F D COAXIA D OPTICA DBS OPTICA Ç or DBS tuner DIGITA Notes This receier is compatible only with digital components using 32, 44.1, or 48-kHz sampling frequencies and not compatible with 96 khz. If not, set the selector to the correct position using a screwdrier before connecting the AC power cord to a wall outlet. VOTAGE SEECT 220V 240V Before You Use Your eceier Before you start using your receier, make sure that you hae: Turned MASTE VO to the leftmost position (0). Selected the appropriate speaker system. (For details, see Selecting the speaker system on page 9.) Set BAANCE to the center position. Turn on the receier and check the following indicator. Press MUTG on the remote if MUTG appears in the display. 120V Connecting the AC power cord Connect the AC power cord from this receier and from your audio/ideo components to a wall outlet. If you connect other audio components to AC ET on the receier, the receier can supply power to the connected component(s) so you can turn on/off whole system when you turn on/off the receier. Note that only one switched AC outlet is supplied with the Australian model. Clearing the receier s memory Before you use your receier for the first time or when you want to clear the receier s memory, do the procedure below. Do not connect high-wattage electrical home appliances such as electric irons, fans, or s to this outlet. DISPAY 1 Turn off the receier. 2 Press down DISPAY, PANE UP/DOWN, and POWE simultaneously. The contents of the memory (preset station and other parameter settings) are erased. 12

The last receied station is tuned in. 2 Press DISPAY so that the frequency appears in the display. 3 Press FM/AM to select FM or AM. 4 Press TUNG or. Press the button for a higher station number; press the button for a lower one. When you tune past either end of the band, the receier automatically jumps to the opposite end and continues scanning in the same direction. Eery time a station is receied, the receier stops scanning. To continue scanning, press the button again. Presetting adio Stations You ll most likely want to preset the receier with the radio stations you listen to often so that you don t hae to tune in the station eery time. The receier can store a total of 30 FM or AM stations. You can store the stations on preset numbers combining 3 characters (A, B and C) and numbers (0-9). For example, you can store a station as preset number A1, B6, or C9. PESET TUNG / BAND CH SHIFT MEMOY 1 otate until the TUNE indicator lights up. The last receied station is tuned in. 2 Tune in the station you want. If you are not familiar with how to tune in a station, see eceiing Broadcasts on page Press MEMOY. MEMOY appears for a few seconds. Do Steps 4 and 5 before MEMOY goes out. 4 Press SHIFT to select a memory page (A, B or C). Each time you press SHIFT, the letter A, B or C appear in the display. 5 When using the buttons on the receier: Press PESET / to specify the preset number, and then press MEMOY. MEMOY goes out and the selected station is preset. When using the buttons on the remote: Press the numeric button on the remote (0 to 9). If you don t know which stations are preset on which numbers, you can tune by scanning the preset stations. 1 otate until the TUNE indicator lights up. The last receied station is tuned in. 2 Press SHIFT to select a memory page (A, B or C), then press the numeric button on the remote. For example, select A and then press 7 to tune in the station preset as A7. z You can tune by scanning the preset stations otate until the TUNE indicator lights up, and then press DISPAY so that the frequency display appears. Then press PESET TUNG or to select the station you want. Each time you press the buttons, the preset numbers change as follows: na1 A2... A0 B1 B2... B0N nc0...c2 C1N Indexing Preset Stations and Program Sources You can enter a name of up to 8 characters for preset stations (station index) and program sources. These index names (for example, VHS ) appear in the receier s display when a station or program source is selected. Note that no more than one name can be entered for each preset station or program source. This function is useful for distinguishing components of the same kind; 2 VCs, for example, can be specified as VHS and 8MM, respectiely. It is also handy for identifying components connected to jacks meant for another type of component; for example, a second player connected to the / jacks. You don t hae to connect playback and recording components directly: once you select a program source on the receier, you can record and edit as you normally would using the controls on each component. Before you begin, make sure you e connected all components properly.
