Five of the students received a Stigall Scholarship for the second time. Three are new organ students. The committee who listened to the auditions was very impressed! Several students even performed their pieces by memory! The scholarship winners from will be featured in the Student Summer Recital on July 24 at St. John s Baptist Church. The scholarship winners for will be introduced in our July newsletter and will be invited to perform on the Summer Series in Thanks to Jane Cain, Florence Jowers, Katie Ann McCarty, Dawn Tatum, and Ginger Wyrick for preparing these students for the scholarship competition. This great group of young organ enthusiasts should provide an inspiration to every member of our chapter. Your generous offerings each week at the Summer Recital Series allow us to give approximately $5,000 annually in scholarships through the Stigall Scholarship Fund. JUNE 2011 have a remarkably friendly and cooperative chapter with many people willing to help. One of my goals as Dean was to upgrade our website! Creating a new website turned out to be a tedious and laborious task. Many thanks to Monty Bennett, Lance Burnette, and Adam Ward for turning a few of my ideas and many of theirs into a reality! 4 Chapter Dinner, Evensong and Installation of Officers May 10, 2011 Providence United Methodist Church 2810 Providence Rd., Charlotte, NC Dr. Adam Ward, Director of Music Ministries Mr. Robert Ivey, Music Associate and Organist Dinner, Installation, and Evensong Service The Charlotte Chapter AGO officers for were installed by Kyle Ritter, District Convener, during a service on Tuesday, May 10, 2011 at Providence United Methodist Church. Dinner was elegantly hosted by the chancel choir members of Providence in the atrium. Each table setting was unique and included china, silver, and crystal as well as cloth napkins, flowers, and candles! The 7:30pm Evensong and Installation Service was led by The Rev. Dr. Kenneth Carter, Senior Minister, along with the Providence United Methodist Church Chancel Choir under the direction of Dr. Adam Ward, Director of Music Ministries, and Mr. Robert Ivey, Music Associate and Organist. A post-service dessert buffet was enjoyed by all in the atrium.

Every Wednesday the composer Bruce Adolphe re-writes a popular melody in the style of a classical composer and challenges a listener to identify both the melody and the composer. Here are some replies: I am a singer and my call to one of my kitties is a little ditty of her name... she responds to it and trots over when she hears it. Cats respond to soothing voices anyway, and they respond better to higher pitched voices, so singing to calm kitty makes sense. If I sing (most notably in soprano) my cat seems to go nuts. She becomes affectionate, wants to be petted, purrs, rubs her face against my hands, and starts kneading with her paws. I had a cat that would come and sit on the piano or by my side when I played, or would be in my face when I talked.

9 American Guild of Organists 2011 Region IV Convention June 26-29, 2011 Greensboro, NC The Region IV convention of AGO, entitled A Carolina Celebration and scheduled for June in Greater Greensboro, promises to be an interesting and diverse series of events. Among the highlights: Sunday evening s opening service at First Presbyterian Church, with Joyce Jones appearing as organist on the twin front and back Letourneau instruments; Monday s lecture by Dr. Jones on her approaches to improvisation; Monday evening s concert by Gillian Weir at the same church, with a masterclass by this famous artist on Wednesday afternoon; Chelsea Chen, organist, and Andrew Willis, fortepianist, at UNCG; Tuesday morning s concert at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church of High Point by the winner of the Regional Competition for Young Organists (the competition itself will have been held on Saturday morning, June 25, at the same church, and is open to the public); Tuesday afternoon s presentation of Bach s Clavierübung III, a concert sponsored by the Charlotte chapter; Tuesday evening s concert by the Bel Canto Choral Society; and Wednesday evening s closing concert of four newly commissioned organ concerti by composers Dan Locklair, Pamela Decker, Rachel Laurin and Robin Dinda, premiered on Fisk organ Op.82 at Christ United Methodist Church by organists from the Piedmont Triad and accompanied by the Eastern Music Festival orchestra conducted by Gerard Schwarz. 10 200th Anniversary of the Birth of Aristide Cavaillé-Coll To mark the 200th anniversary of Aristide Cavaillé-Coll s birth (February 4, 1811), and also the 150th anniversary of his organ at St Sulpice, Paris, in 2012, Fugue State Films plans to produce a DVD/CD boxed set containing the first ever full-length documentary about his life and work. Aristide Cavaillé-Coll was the greatest organ builder of the 19th century and also probably the most famous of all organ builders. Creator of such instruments as those in St Sulpice, Paris, St Ouen, Rouen, he devised a new way of building organs that led directly to the development of the French Romantic School of organ composition. Franck, Widor, Vierne, and their contemporaries and followers were inspired by the sounds and possibilities of Cavaillé-Coll s organs. They composed pieces that pushed the boundaries of composition for the instrument and are now at the very heart of the organ repertoire. This music is indivisible from the organs of Cavaillé-Coll. The documentary will be accompanied by a plethora of recordings and filmed performances of works by Franck, Saint-Saëns, Guilmant, Boëllmann, Widor, and Vierne on a superb selection of Cavaillé-Coll s organs including St Sulpice, St Ouen, and St Sernin. An illustrated booklet will include photos, details, and specifications of all the organs and essays about the composers and the music.
