2 Dear Parents and Students, Welcome to the Mt Mourne School Band program! We are excited to have you as a part of our program this year! Please take some time to read over the Band Handbook. This will prepare you for your work and responsibilities as a member of the band. If a problem should arise, consult the handbook first. If you still cannot find the answer, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs. Becknell. Students that take part in the Band program at Mt Mourne are challenged to grow musically and encouraged to achieve their highest potential. In order for this to occur, students must respect their director, their fellow musicians, their instruments, the music they perform, any guests, and all of the work that each person puts into the Band. If you follow the rules as laid out in this handbook, your reward will be like nothing you have experienced before. You will feel pride, a sense of accomplishment, self-satisfaction, and have lots of FUN!!!! Most importantly, I look forward to seeing you all at the performances this year! Musically yours, Sonja F. 3 BAND MISSION STATEMENT The mission of the Mt. Mourne School band program is to provide its students with an enjoyable experience in music, ultimately guiding each student toward having a life that is enriched by listening to and creating music. This experience will be achieved through high standards of musical excellence, personal responsibility, and a strong work ethic. In pursuit of this goal, students will develop self-esteem, confidence, character, and meaningful relationships with others. INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE Mt Mourne is a part of the International Baccalaureate Organization. Our curriculum incorporates the IB model and the Arts are considered one of the eight equal content areas. The Arts will follow the IB curriculum and have assignments which correlate with the IB Areas of Interaction and Learner Profiles. All band students will be graded on these IB units through a final product at the end of each unit. COMMUNICATION Sonja F. DAILY REQUIRED MATERIALS Band Binder with Clear Sheet Protectors Method Book and Music Pencil (No Pens!) Instrument
4 CLASS PARTICIPATION Band is a year long class. By signing up for this class, you have agreed to commit to it for this school year. Students that drop band will not be allowed to re-enter into the program. INSTRUMENT LABELS In order to store an instrument in the storage room, students must mark their instruments clearly with a tag or label. Luggage tags are great ways to personalize your case. Percussionists should label all sticks/mallets and equipment with their initials or name. Mt Mourne will not be responsible for damaged, lost, or stolen instruments or accessories. BAND EXPECTATIONS 1. Follow Instructions the first time given. 2. Arrive on time and be prepared to learn. 3. Help support a positive learning environment. 4. Treat every individual with courtesy and respect. 5. Follow all established procedures. CONSEQUENCES 1) Verbal Warning and/or Bounced to another classroom with assignment. 2) Parent Contact: , phone call or conference 3) Office Referral - We believe that all students can behave appropriately. No student will be allowed to interfere with the teaching or learning of other students in the class. We reserve the right to use consequences to fit the situation. Severe offenses will result in immediate discipline referral and handled in accordance with the discipline matrix.
5 EQUIPMENT and SUPPLIES Students are required to provide their own instrument. Students should clean, oil and/or grease their instruments regularly. They must also provide their own supplies for their instrument, such as valve oil, slide grease, cork grease, reeds, neck straps, mallets, etc. to use on the instrument both at home and at school. Please note that these items are NOT available at school. Students are responsible for purchasing these items on their own from a music store. Recommended locations for purchasing supplies: - Music & Arts Huntersville, NC The Music Center Statesville, NC Music N More Mooresville, NC - EQUIPEMENT and SUPPLIES Cont d Students using a school-owned instrument will need to sign a School Owned Instrument Rental Agreement and pay the required fee. Students that are renting an instrument from the school are also responsible for providing their own oil and slide grease. Percussionists are required to supply their own sticks. All students playing percussion should bring their VIC FIRTH Educational Pack 2 (EP2) stick bag to class every day.
6 INSTRUMENT REPAIR Please DO NOT attempt to fix the instrument on your own. Instrument rental repairs need to be serviced with your music dealer or can be done through our music representative at your own expense. Please see Mrs. Becknell for minor repairs and before sending your instrument to get repaired. Please send in a note with your child if he/she will be without an instrument in class due to repair. STEP UP INSTRUMENTS After a year or two of playing, many students begin to get more serious about their musical skills and should consider playing on better equipment. Most beginning students start learning on student model instruments which are wonderful to start on but do not allow the students to develop their tone, intonation, and technical skills to their fullest potential. Students who are interested in playing their instruments throughout high school and beyond should consider investing in higher quality instruments. The director would be glad to help students investigate higher quality instruments when the time is right for you and your child. PRACTICE Students are required to practice a minimum of 120 minutes per week. Practicing is a necessary part in the development of our band. All students are expected to practice current class assignments throughout the week until they are proficient. Students are free to arrange their practice schedules as needed for the week but must get a minimum of 120 minutes per week. Keep in mind that frequency in practice is more important than the amount of time practiced. Students will be given frequent assessments every two weeks to check their proficiency and progress. These assessments will be taken for a grade. Students may be asked to write a reflection, evaluation, or perform a song or technique in order to verify the quality of practice time.
7 ATTENDANCE AT PERFORMANCES *CONCERT ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY!!!* Concerts are one of the most rewarding experiences you will have in band. Performances are a culmination of what is learned in class, just like taking a test at the end of a unit. If for some reason an absence from a performance is unavoidable, the director should be notified as soon as possible. I couldn t find a ride or I have soccer practice are NOT acceptable excuses. Please keep in mind that there will be a concert time and a call time. The call time is when all students should be in their seats at the concert venue, ready to warm-up and tune prior to the start of the performance. All performance times and locations will be announced well in advance so that students and their families may plan accordingly. CONCERT ATTIRE *NOTICE: Students who attend the concert in something other than what is mentioned below will not be able to participate and may receive a zero concert grade. Remember that we are representing Mt Mourne School and all performances shall be treated in a professional manner. Beginning Band (6th Grade): Guys: Black pants, black socks, black or dark colored shoes and Red collared shirt that will be tucked in. (This could be a polo shirt or dress shirt...no T- shirts please) Girls: Black pants or skirt; Red blouse. (This could be a polo shirt or dressy top that follows ISS Dress Code) Black dress shoes NO flip-flops or Crocs.
8 CONCERT BAND ATTIRE (7th Grade): Guys: White, long-sleeved, button-up dress shirt; black dress pants, black socks, black dress shoes, and a tie. (Preferably a tie that does not sing!) Ladies: Black Dress Pants or black skirt, white dress shirt or blouse No sleeveless shirts. Black dress shoes NO flip-flops! SYMPHONIC BAND ATTIRE (8th Grade): will be dressed in Concert Black Guys: have two options 1) Black shoes, socks, pants and black dress shirt. 2) Black shoes, socks, pants, white dress shirt, and tie with a black sports coat. Ladies: Black dress pants with a black blouse or you can wear a black dress. (Sleeveless dresses are NOT permitted) Black dress shoes. No flip-flops. EVENTS TO REMEMBER REQUIRED PERFORMANCES for ALL STUDENTS December 2014 Winter Concert May 2015 Spring Concert/ Showcasing the Arts Optional Opportunities for ALL Musicians: November 21, County Audition Fee Deadline December 5, District Audition Fee Deadline December 13, All County Honor Band East Iredell MS January 10, Northwest District Honor Band Auditions January 23-24, All County Honor Band Statesville HS February 20-22, NW District Band Clinic March 7, NC All-State Honors Band Auditions (Top Scoring District Students Only) May 1-3, All-State Honors Band Clinic
9 *SYMPHONIC STUDENTS ONLY* This year we will be working on a unit titled The Inner Game of Auditions. This unit will cover a wide range of techniques that can be transferred across disciplines. What will I be required to do? - All symphonic band students will be required to give a solo performance OR go through an honor band audition. It will be your choice. You will also be required to have a minimum of one private lesson with Mrs. Becknell to help you prepare before your performance. The Solo Performance: - Students that choose not to participate in the County Honor Band Audition will give a solo performance on a small stage during the school day in front of their Symphonic Band classmates, parents, and school administrators. The solo will be selected with the help of Mrs. Becknell and has to be equally as challenging as the honor band solo. The Audition: - Students interested in auditioning will prepare the required solo repertoire and MS Scales for their instrument. They will only be asked to perform their solo & scales in front of one judge during a blind audition at East Iredell Middle School on Saturday, December 13th, What happens if I make the All County Honor Band? - Congratulations! - You will now have the opportunity to attend the All County Honor Band Clinic at Statesville HS on Friday, January 23rd and perform a concert with other top honors students on Saturday, January 24th. - Showing Honors participation looks great on applications and future resumes! It will expand your musical knowledge and help build skills of cooperation and commitment.
